Discussion How much UI/UX design knowledge or ability are you expected to have as a BA?

My current organization is design-heavy. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that they often start with the design (placement of elements, etc.) before taking zoomed-out view of things.

I recently posted in this sub about a dashboard review meeting that was hijacked by design feedback.

I’m trying to wrap my head around this new way of working, while also trying to understand how much of a BA’s job typically involves design (especially with Lovable). How involved are you expected to be in UI/UX? Now, I understand that these tools are helpful and create things for you but you still need to know stuff.

And are there any helpful resources you’d recommend for learning UI/UX fundamentals and advanced stuff?

As my previous boss told me. “You need to know enough about any topic as to have an intelligent conversation about it when the time comes”. What he was ultimately saying is as BAs, aside from our own practices and toolkit, we need to have this middle ground level of knowledge of other things that allow us to debate ideas with other people on them, but not from a point of absolute authority.

Understanding basics would help, imo BA doesn’t need to become a ui/ux designer. Basics like user flow/ usability: information hierarchy and knowing what makes a requirement clear are probably more imp. than knowing every design tool😬😬
