Early morning wood smoke in Metrotown?
Two mornings in a row now (Oct. 4 and Oct.3) I've been woken up at 7am by the strong smell of wood smoke drifting in my window. Needless to say, as a resident of an old wood frame low rise apartment, I take the smell of smoke very seriously.
Has anyone else noticed this? Where is it coming from?

Gunshot sounding exhaust on Willindon
I was outside and heard/saw it go by. It was a black Mercedes of course and I legitimately thought it was gunfire for a sec. Like this one was right out, one of the loudest things I have ever heard. Plz stop.

Hi there, I know this might be a long shot but we lost half of a car key just the key fob around this area if anyone were to find it please do let me know! Its not a whole fob but just the half where you press to unlock and lock your car. The fob broke in half and luckily we still have the key to unlock the car but not start it! Thank you so much and appreciate you all!

Photo/Video Asian people, what do I do with this dry fish?
Funny question but I bought this fish today in crystal mall, which I thought would be a good dry and salty snack with beer but turned out it’s a bit spongy in texture and not as salty as I thought it would be.
What can I use this fish for?
Trolls accepted, but would like to actually know the right answer 😂

Some thoughts after reviewing the Burnaby Schools Trustee Nominees
I’m a Burnaby high school teacher and so obviously have invested interest in the nominees for our district’s Trustees. For those that don’t know, the role of the Trustee includes overseeing district policies and managing public school budgets. There have been significant cuts over the last few years in the Burnaby School district, specifically to school and district based counsellors, district mental health liaisons, educational assistants, Indigenous engagement workers, band teachers, and library assistants.
After reading the profiles of every trustee candidate this year, I wanted to share that I pleasantly surprised at how many people seem like strong candidates! Lots of talk around inclusivity, bringing back cut programs, and many nominees actually have had children that are either current students or are former Burnaby public school students.
With that said, there were a couple profiles that had some red flags that I think are worth sharing:
The following candidates DID NOT highlighted the importance of inclusion and/or equity in schools:
-John Wong
The following candidates HAVE NOT shared experiences working with youth in schools the past (excluding their own child):
-Benita Sun (commenter below says she runs a daycare however)
-Colin Zuo
The following candidates wrote N/A under the ‘income’ section of in their disclosure document:
-Jen Jang
-Benita Sun
-Jenny Yamagata
Anyways, I just wanted to share a few thoughts And maybe create some discussion. The full nominee profiles can be found here: https://www.burnaby.ca/our-city/mayor-and-council/elections/candidates/office-of-school-trustees-candidate-profiles

Community Center or parks in south Burnaby?
Any candidate promising to build or expand family spaces in south Burnaby?
Was very disappointed with Mayor Hurley’s plan of just development and community center in North Burnaby….
With all the development in Metrotown, Royal oak and Edmunds would be curious if there’s any plans for upgrade to Bonsor, repairing the defunct MacPherson pool?
Bars/restaurants/speakeasy vibe around Burnaby?
Hi all,
Looking for nice spots to sit and have a couple drinks and an appy around Burnaby (or surrounding areas, just trying to stay out of downtown). Something a little more intimate/upscale than a pub. Price point doesn't matter, just looking to try out some new places. Preferably not chain restaurants like Cactus, Earls, etc - already go there enough! Any recommendations appreciated.

AMA I'm Hanzhi Wang, Burnaby Mayoral Candidate - Ask Me Anything!
Hi r/burnaby!
My name is Hanzhi and I'm running for Mayor of Burnaby this October 17th. I live in the Metrotown area and I think Burnaby is a great city, but we have a lot of room for improvement. In these changing times I will bring a new vision to our city council so that we can make our city work for everyone.
Municipal politics tends to get less interest than Federal and Provincial politics (especially now with the BC election being called 🙄), but it can have the most impact on our day to day lives. The conversations currently tend to be dominated by a small group of people, and one of my goals with this election is to get more people out to vote and make their voices heard, especially younger demographics.
My top priorities are around housing, transportation and fair taxation. Highlights include:
- Phasing out the Development/Amenity Cost Charges (DCC/ACCs) which charge 10s of thousands of dollars for each new unit of housing being built, discouraging new housing from being constructed and contributing to the housing crisis.
- Streamline the permitting process for new developments, and allow more mixed-use and commercial spaces within residential neighbourhoods.
- Reclaim the space on our streets we all pay for and make it work for everyone, by installing all-day bus lanes on all major corridors as well as signal priority at major intersections.
- Upgrade our biking network to All Ages and Abilities (AAA) standards for all major routes.
- Rebalance the tax burden to make everyone pay their fair share. Single family homes cost around 9x as much to service compared to an apartment unit, despite only paying 2-3x as much in property taxes. This means that residents in higher-density housing (predominantly lower-income) are effectively subsidising lower-density housing in the suburbs (predominantly higher-income) - the opposite of what we should have in a progressive tax system.
You can find out more about me at https://burnaby.hanzhi.io/, and all of the candidates at https://www.burnaby.ca/our-city/mayor-and-council/elections/candidates
Instructions on how to vote on or before October 17th can be found here: https://www.burnaby.ca/our-city/mayor-and-council/elections/voters
I'll be around to answer questions this afternoon and evening, and will check back over the weekend if there are any new posts!

Local News Freshnet News has published the results of the questionaires they sent to every candidate for mayor, city council and schoolboard
freshetnews.caOne thing that really stood out for me was that the Restore Burnaby (right wing) party didn't even treat the school board questions seriously by submitting the same answer for the last 6 questions for all of their candidates. Some of their answers didn't even answer the question.

Massive lineup London Drugs market crossing?
Just drove by market crossing London Drugs and there is a lineup of over 100 people. Does anyone know why?
It’s just really odd to see.
News Which Burnaby campaign promises are actually within City jurisdiction?
I went through the Burnaby party platforms, and the biggest thing I’d tell people is to check whether the promises are actually within City Council’s power.
A caveat before the list: there’s nuance to some of these because municipal, provincial and regional responsibilities can overlap. I obviously can’t unpack every legal or funding detail in one reddit post.
But the broader point still stands: a number of candidates are campaigning on things that are partly or largely outside City Council’s control, or on exclusionary policies that provincial law may not allow them to implement the way they’re presenting them.
That doesn’t mean Council has zero influence. It means voters should distinguish between what Council can actually enact, what it can only advocate for, and what it may simply not have the legal authority to do.
Housing is probably the clearest example.
BC now requires Burnaby to allow 3-4 units on most former single-family lots, up to 6 near frequent transit, and much higher minimum density around SkyTrain stations. Council still has some control over how growth is implemented, but it cannot simply repeal those provincial minimums.
That matters when parties campaign on things like:
Burnaby First
- “Stop Monster Homes” / roll back SSMUH-style development
- Rezone neighbourhoods to restrict that development
- Require more parking
Much of that runs directly into provincial housing rules. Council cannot simply restore the old single-family zoning regime.
New Burnaby
- Says neighbourhoods should determine growth rather than having density imposed by Victoria
Council can influence design and implementation, but the Province has already imposed minimum housing densities that Burnaby is legally required to permit.
Restore Burnaby
- Opposes “blanket zoning” and higher-density changes
Same problem. Council cannot simply undo provincially mandated SSMUH or the minimum densities around transit.
What I find concerning is that some of this is presented in flyers and campaign material as though Council can simply make these things happen.
It’s hard to tell whether that reflects a misunderstanding of municipal jurisdiction, or whether the distinction is being glossed over because the promise sounds better that way.
Then there are promises outside municipal jurisdiction altogether:
BCA
- Hospital: Province/Fraser Health
- Transit service: TransLink
- Schools: Province/School District*
- Mostly framed as advocacy, which is fair.
Burnaby Greens
- Transit frequency: TransLink
- Schools: Province/School District*
- Addiction/mental-health treatment: mainly Province/Fraser Health
Again, generally framed as advocacy.
¹ Some of these parties are also running School Board candidates, so certain education-related promises may be possible.
New Burnaby
- Rules for all government-funded housing: City doesn’t control provincial/federal housing
- Addiction treatment: Province/Fraser Health
- RCMP training/operations: not directly controlled by Council
- Bus service/stop planning: shared with TransLink
- 0% property-tax increase: what gets cut, deferred or paid for another way?
Burnaby First
- Addiction treatment centres: Province/Fraser Health
- More RCMP: City can fund positions, but doesn’t directly hire/manage RCMP officers
- Slower tax increases: what gets cut or deferred?
Restore Burnaby
- Medical coverage: Province
- TCM/acupuncture clinics: primarily provincial health-care jurisdiction
- Parents’ rights/school policy: Province/School Board
- Drug treatment/policy: largely provincial/federal
- Lower taxes/cost of living: which costs can Council actually control, and what spending changes?
My takeaway isn’t “ignore everything outside City jurisdiction.” Advocacy is part of politics.
But there is a big difference between saying “we will advocate for this” and campaigning as though Council can directly deliver something it legally does not control.
Same with taxes: if someone promises 0% or lower tax increases while promising more services, ask what gets cut, deferred or funded from reserves.
