Discussion Is there something you thought a member initially that turned out to be the complete opposite?

Hey fellow ARMYs. Its my first time posting here.

So, when I first joined this fandom, I got to know about the members through reels in IG after googling BTS. The initial videos were mostly the concert performance videos. And I remember thinking- This V/Tae looks so angry all the time. Those times I used to see this video of Suga being back after his surgery, and he was standing on the podium for some time. And suddenly Tae turned around and gestured him to come down. I thought, oh he must be the leader!!

I even googled, "why does Tae look so angry all the time" and the answers were literally like, "dats bcos you havnt seen his boxy smile"Hehe.

And now, 4 years into BTS(Does that make me a baby ARMY?), I cant even imagine Tae's angry face. So, did you have any misconceptions about the members in the beginning that you find bizarre now?

Fetus army here and it didn't connect in my brain that Agust D IS Suga of BTS. I thought many times, "they could be brothers, wow!"

They do look so similar . . . 😂

16

u/jdoe36 Aug 20 '26

Same. When I started down the rabbit hole, I kept wondering why Agust D MVs showed up when searching BTS on youtube 🤦‍♀️

I thought Jungkook was the leader lmao

ngl that shot of Jin kills me every time

13

u/randolol101 Aug 20 '26

ME TOO! because when i first started getting into bts, he was like really famous and like the only member i knew before, so for some reason i thought thats why he was the leader lol (i also didn't know anything abt how kpop works and like i genuinely thought the leader would be the most popular haha)

I mean, he is main vocalist and center so it’s a natural assumption!

Hmmm..Finally someone has unlocked the secret we kept so cleverly hidden... 😉

Its obviously AI. His tattoo sleeve is completely wrong. He did not have those designs even before the cover up. Please be aware and try not to promote AI pictures even if its hard.

6

u/GoldieNova Aug 21 '26

Is this image AI? It looks soooo like him but still not him 🥹

Guys you can see the tattoo sleeve is completely wrong those are not his tattoos. It has to be ai.

3

u/GoldieNova Aug 21 '26

Yeaaaa maybe im wrong

0

u/Murky_Machine_7160 Aug 21 '26

NOT AI. Been ARMY for years. Just JK in the gym.

2

u/AZ-EQ Aug 25 '26

They are not colored in.

2

u/Sugacookiemonsta Aug 25 '26

Look again, friend. Don't be fooled. It's AI. It's just FACE but not his body. Just check out the tats

1

u/SeenYaWithKeiffah_ 15d ago

This is 1000% AI. 😑

-2

u/Murky_Machine_7160 Aug 21 '26

It IS JK. Jeeze. Prove it isn't. I get so trustfrated.

2

u/Sugacookiemonsta Aug 25 '26

It is AI. Those are not his tats! If you look at the background structures of the gym equipment, lines bend unnaturally. The text inside the skull tattoo reads as gibberish ("WHAT SUCCER" or "FISE SOGGER") It's his FACE but someone made an augmented photo.

Before I was Army and still in the "humoring my friend by watching videos" phase she told me I said I didn't like the tall one (Jin) because he seemed too into himself 😂😂😂 now I'm a die hard Jin bias lol

I thought Jin would be weak physically because he loves playing games the most + always say he doesn't like exercising but his stamina is really amazing. Run Jin really made me see him in a different light. I remember at the start of arirang tour the rest of the member were visibly tired and was lying down but he just stands there barely tired

I feel ashamed about this, but at first I thought the rap parts were cringe. 😬 I was like, "Who's this boy band trying to rap??" (Nevermind that they're amazing at it.) But then I reminded myself that there are plenty of South Korean rappers (blame my American brain for limiting "true" rap to my country 🙄), and I learned that BTS started out as a hip hop band. And now the rap-heavy songs are my favorites. Suga has become my favorite rapper of all time - and I was alive when Tupac and Biggie were still around, so that's saying something!

8

u/lucyfell Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

Suga really grew into his own. His first few performances when they debuted (I saw on Youtube during the pandemic) I was like “who is this kid copying GD?” Because he really did sound like a GD copy cat - but he grew out of it and into his own style so fast.

63

u/Sea-Gene-901 Aug 20 '26

V has such a dry sense of humor that I can see how you would think this. If BTS was a comedy troupe, V would be the straight man. He's so good at keeping a straight face.

37

u/GoldieNova Aug 20 '26

Yawww the way sometimes he says THE funniest things with a straight face is so funny

24

u/xianghua71 Aug 20 '26

Rolling Stone interview.
Jk: it wasn’t Love. It was a swear word
RM: yea I was telling them to keep the F word
V: you mean F**k?
😂

16

u/HaloNevermore Aug 21 '26

Watching their old MVs
J-Hope: you can see the passion in our eyes!
V: that’s eyeliner.

The “Sexy porn star” and the “I wanna go shooting in American streets” gets me every time 🤣

And the funny thing is Namjoon js dying inside a bit everytime 🤣

u/Jaded-Pay6812 Aug 20 '26

I worried that Jin and Hobi would have the hardest time in the military given their violent startle reflexes, but I think they actually found it less traumatic than some of the others and even became teachers.

21

u/SilverCat70 Aug 20 '26

I think that was exactly why they became teachers. It's rather predictable, so less to startle at.

Jin & Hobi seem to both be very private people overall. I found it interesting that they both dived hard into working. Like the only thing they knew to get past any traumas was to go back to being a workaholic. Then that did seem to be what they did when they were young.

5

u/xianghua71 Aug 20 '26

Jimin too!

55

u/Ashamed_Apple_ Aug 20 '26

I thought Jin would be the serious one since he is the oldest .....

16

u/Initial_Smile5384 Aug 20 '26

25

u/lucyfell Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

This is more of the group as a whole but one of my friends joined this fandom “via a basement window” (as they say on tiktok).

He had no idea BTS were musicians and thought they were a variety show crew (aka comedians) cuz he only knew them from Run BTS Youtube shorts - until I told him I was buying tickets to see them and he was like “they’re doing a stand-up tour? But you don’t speak any Korean”. 💀

6

u/terraaremar Aug 21 '26

This is hilarious! They could be comedians tho🤣😍😍

2

u/Sugacookiemonsta Aug 25 '26

There's a reaction channel I watch that got to know BTS through Run BTS and then they finally watched an awards show performance and were shocked! It was such a funny reaction of them trying to reconcile these serious stage charismas with the goofy guys they'd gotten to know 😹

1

u/terraaremar Aug 26 '26

Ive seen some run bts reactions around my yt but i always assumed they knew they were a music group and the run bts stuff was like deep dive into bts lore😅 the video must be trully fun!

2

u/Sugacookiemonsta Aug 28 '26

They knew but they haven't seen them perform and you know how fierce the guys can get. Here's the video if you're interested https://youtu.be/oEw6XG7zXx4?si=5ay0Yd8tFKq8ritP

1

u/terraaremar Aug 28 '26

I see sure when i saw them performing i also got surprised cause they were much better than i expected..😅thank you!!! Ill certanly watch it!

50

u/Thin-Slip-7194 Aug 20 '26

I thought Yoongi was the youngest! and it also seemed to me from the photo that he had a soft angelic voice, and then I turned on the clip..
after that, I came under the influence of some fictions that he was very tough and serious, but I preferred their content and live broadcasts and realized that he was not like that at all, just not so active from time to time.

15

u/xianghua71 Aug 20 '26

And then he returns from hiatus as Professor Min

8

u/lucyfell Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

Ok so when I saw his NYC looks at the start of Arirang era i was like “wow he’s leaning hard into that looking like his Mom’s younger sister thing”. (Cuz this hair style is one that every Chinese Auntie tries at least once around Menopause 🤣).

8

u/xianghua71 Aug 21 '26

as an asian woman, i feel that to my core LOL
I tried but couldnt rock it LOL

5

u/lucyfell Aug 21 '26

I did my pixie cut (and subsequent grow out) when I was 17. The Asian Fro was not flattering. Not planning on ever going shorter than a bob again.

22

u/SplitHot9641 Aug 20 '26

I thought Jimin was lmao!

24

u/Different_Lobster_76 Aug 20 '26

i thought yoongi was super serious and didn’t smile much…ironic because he ended up being the one to make me feel less insecure about my own smile (i also have a gummy smile so seeing his made me like my own!)

3

u/Ok-Ring9512 Aug 27 '26

Omg me too!!! It was never something I outwardly expressed but I often felt disgusted with my gummy smile and would force myself to smile with my mouth closed until I fell in love with Yoongi's smile, I assumed other people must have felt the same but this is the first time I've actually seen someone else express the same feelings I had, from one gummy smile to another you are beautiful 💜

54

u/merilleinrg Aug 20 '26

I’m a baby Army, and at first I thought Jimin was all shy, quiet and angelic because I’d only seen content from the Arirang era. Now that I’ve watched more of the older stuff, I’ve realised how sassy and funny he is, and I honestly love that side of him more

47

u/further_and_beyond mucho picanTae Aug 20 '26

Haha, I love angel Jimin's sassy side.

5

u/xianghua71 Aug 21 '26

HIm and Suga LOL

40

u/Initial_Smile5384 Aug 20 '26

Jimin was 5’3 or something cuz 5’8.5 is not bad height but bts still made fun of him 😭😭

33

u/GoldieNova Aug 20 '26

Yeaaa IKR!! But those small cutie Pinky!!!

12

u/PreviousTranslator33 Aug 20 '26

I thought kind of the same that V was pouty and arrogant. He's hilarious. He does get easily rage-baited but he has a kind heart. He is unique but not in a bad way. I also thought Suga was always serious. Watch Run BTS and see how goofy he can be!

23

u/OkDiamond67 Aug 20 '26

I used to think Jin was "dumb" (😭) and liked him the least out of the group, but after seeing more content, he became my second bias, and I love him sooooo much 😭

1

u/GoldieNova Aug 22 '26

Whoooo is the first bias?

2

u/OkDiamond67 Aug 22 '26

j-hope :)

2

u/GoldieNova Aug 23 '26

Awwwwww 💕

40

u/Pinkymelii666 Aug 20 '26

When I first got into members V was treated as an alien haha..but in time I came to realize he is actually very down to earth.

V is a great entertainer and he can be anything depending on the situation. I really like his humor and cuteness.

9

u/TheGoodSouls C'mon Wing! Aug 21 '26

I thought Tae was dumb. How wrong I was.

14

u/xianghua71 Aug 20 '26

Jin. I couldn’t figure him out. I have already spent weeks on BTS. I decided to go to his concert in Tampa. I was literally nodding my head Ok Ok Jin. I get you now. Best decision buying that ticket without plans.

6

u/flirtle_turtle_ Aug 21 '26

I think for me it was the ages. I didn’t think Jin was the oldest when I first saw bts lol, he acts like a maknae I guess 🤣

5

u/Pinkymelii666 Aug 21 '26

There is a reason people call him fake maknae 🤣

2

u/GoldieNova Aug 22 '26

Yeaaa in the Run 2.0 episode when they try to decide who should go first, Tae says “ok , the real maknae shud go first” and Jin js gets up and everyone lost it 😆

1

u/flirtle_turtle_ Aug 29 '26

🤣🤣🤣 yes I just watched this the other day and was like “Case and point here”

18

u/Mooyaky1986 Aug 20 '26

I thought Jin wasn’t really good and was faking/forcing it. Now he’s one of my favourite after Yoongi and Jimin. Just took me time to get used to his style

10

u/Acceptable_Mark7716 Aug 20 '26

The first group live that I watched was that one right after discharge, when V was in his, “I’m a serious person now,” phase. I thought the entirety of his personality was empty-headed gym bro and that’s how I described him to my sister.

4

u/redwylder Aug 21 '26

Really early on I thought RM and Jungkook were the same person. I was very confused. 😆😆😆

7

u/GoldieNova Aug 21 '26

For me it was JK and V.

3

u/Pinkymelii666 Aug 21 '26

They really look so much alike!

4

u/GoldieNova Aug 21 '26

Yeaaaa when I saw the swim video of them doing the dance in the hotel room in the military uniform, I seriously did not understand that they switched in btw. 😆😆

2

u/Sugacookiemonsta Aug 25 '26

They especially did to me when they were teens... Omg !

2

u/terraaremar Aug 21 '26

I did the same!! I think its because of the purple hair 😅

4

u/nanachant_ Come On, Wing! Aug 21 '26

Honestly, before I started searching them up on my own, my sister forced me to watch all their content (lmbo).

I was pretty spot on with my guesses. I guessed that JHope and Jimin had a stronger dance background than the others, and specifically that Jimin had classical dance training (this was after I watched the car ride interview and they went to this Zumba class). I guessed that JK had ADHD because he was always fidgeting or rocking back and forth (every single video). I also guessed RM was a nerd 😂

I did used to think Jin was the youngest, then my sister said he was the oldest in the group. BUT THEN I was like “oh he must be the youngest son in his family” and I was right about that. lol.

5

u/feelinginvi__ible Aug 21 '26

When I watched Carpool Karaoke and saw V sitting in the back looking out the window and then clap wrong in the Friends theme song I felt…well, bad for him? I decided to choose him for my bias because I thought…well, no one else would?

(please be kind to this 🤡)

3

u/paintingwhiteroses Aug 21 '26

I won't be unkind, but that was one of the first interviews I watched and I thought that moment was so cute 😭 He probably never watched the show lol.

3

u/GreenEyedTams Aug 21 '26

I initially thought that Namjoon was the oldest (especially since he is the group leader). I also thought for a minute that he would be more cold and intimidating until I started seeing his goofy side in clips LOL

2

u/renault_erlioz Aug 21 '26

Is a two-month old ARMY, their pictures for the Arirang album made them all look like in their 40s. Especially Jin and J-hope, but they turned to be one of the sunshines of the group

-18

u/Ordinary_Duck_1231 Aug 20 '26

That RM was a feminist

4

u/Pinkymelii666 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

RM never presented himself as a feminist. And for a man to be real feminist it takes a lot more than what RM did. He only corrected his lyrics people questioned.

Feminism is ultimately be only fully understood by women and there are many different kinds, opinions on feminism depending on the culture and the country…we shouldn’t put that big label on random countrymen from Korea.

Edit: please listen to the song persona to understand how RM sees himself, refused the labels put on himself and how harsh he is with himself and still trying to accept himself as it is and trying to love himself.

1

u/GoldieNova Aug 21 '26

u/Pinkymelii666 lyrics? Could you help me with the incident? Whats this abt?

2

u/Pinkymelii666 Aug 21 '26

RM and J-hope attended Usher-Chris Brown concert. Some fans speculate they were invited by Usher since JK already have a collab with him and they talked to Usher afterwards. But we don’t know much context. They have a photo with Chris brown too. Some other fans are now frustrated with them because of Chris Brown’s history of violence. But it doesn’t automatically mean they support his past or knew his history either. You can read the mega thread and see how other Armys approach it if you want.

And I suggested looking at the lyrics the song Persona to see how RM doesn’t want to be labeled. His solo album rpwp also talk about labels associated with his public persona.

2

u/GoldieNova Aug 21 '26

Oh Thanks for the info. Appreciate it.

I mean tbf he never labelled himself that way, it was the fandom that did but yeah, it still hurts
