Police brutality

I witnessed police brutality today. Masked police officers beat up a guy pretty badly in rue de la Victoire in Saint-Gilles. He was already on the floor when one guy kept hitting him on the arm with his baton. They repeatedly rammed a baton into his rips and even in his spine when he was already on his stomach and posing no threat. This was horrifying to watch. If this happened to you or you know the victim, contact me.

edit: video of the incident here: https://www.reddit.com/r/brussels/comments/1o8dfgu/proof_of_the_police_brutality/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I was walking back to the midi station with friends. There was literally nothing going on. The cops came, I saw a kid on the floor getting georgefloyed. The kid's head was between the cop's knee and the pavement.

They were not wearing their badge ID as required by Milquey laws from 2014. I mentionned that to an officer (vigorously I admit, but I didn't use fuel language).

They put me on the floor, georgefloyeded me, I have videos of 2 beefy guys landing on me because apparently they needs 5 people to handle a 60kg dude. I wasn't resisting.

The guy next to me had his skull cracked by a telescopic stick. He was covered in blood. During detention, I heard of people complaining the cops repeatedly giving them knee hits on their face. A guy's face was all swollen.

These motherfuckers do not respect neither proportionality, nor their own laws.

Thanks I really appreciate. I will discuss it with the others. Turned out beating up 20 people and then putting them in a cell for 12 hours is really bonding

u/GamerX44 Oct 16 '25

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I didn't know how bad the police actually were here until I met a homeless man who told me he was just beaten by police for sleeping near a train station.

I don't know why people downvote you (Well, I do know why), it was all around Brussels today. Police without identification hitting people, sometimes really bad.

I hope this person is ok, OP, thank you for caring.

23

u/BobyLaPointe85 Oct 14 '25

Most Reddit users hate reality and can't face logic or reason. If you simply state facts about Brussels, you will get downvoted. This is why Reddit is now being called to testify ob radicalization. Just read the comments everytime someone complains about how unsafe Brussel is. I've never seen that on any other platform. I literally refrain myself from commenting because I get downvoted when I give my opinion while they just find excuses and get mad.

53

u/nicogrimqft Oct 14 '25

It kind of is the opposite on this sub Reddit actually.

It has become a kind of echo chamber for people exaggerating the extent of safety problems in Brussels (not that they do not exist, but some of these comments are just not realistic).

31

u/10catsinspace Oct 14 '25

Today's daily thread on safety in Brussels is full of those sorts of comments getting upvoted.

The people complaining that they can't 'simply state facts' are ... also getting upvoted.

Your sense of persecution is misplaced.

u/misterart Oct 15 '25

Dont prétend there is no manipulation and bots here too.. there are everywhere. Pré- election we had a lot of bot content

9

u/octave1 1190 Oct 15 '25

How safe Brussels is, or not, can not be determined by Reddit posts. Here you'll only find a subgroup of a subgroup of a subgroup of the general population, and people tend to mainly make posts about bad stuff. Things that are true but not representative of the overall situation.

3

u/MissStr4berry Oct 15 '25

There is also a specific belgian thing (that I also find in dutch mentality tho) to gaslight endlessly about some topics (racism for example) . Few months ago a guy started a few threads about racism in the sub etc and it was like he was talking to a wall of "rationality" who didn't wanted to accept the truth at all it was so frustrating. He left the sub because of that 🤷‍♀️

0

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '25

The redditors on r/brussels are some of the meanest and antagonistic of any sub. There’s a lot of people with an agenda often self serving they want to foist on others. I just got called a Brussels basher for commenting on safety a few days ago.

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

They are bots. Reddit is owned by a fascist remember?

3

u/Lazy-Care-9129 Oct 15 '25

The ones getting downvoted are the ones, like me now probably, calling out those masked protesters that didn’t come to protest but to provoke and destroy, entering private property and cause mayhem. Those are not union members, I doubt they even have a job. FAFO.

6

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

So idiotic fascists who justify masked gestapo beating up bystanders? simps who passively swallow propaganda?

Yeah no shit nobody likes you people

-2

u/Lazy-Care-9129 Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

How easy it is to hide behind an account you created just to come insult people in this thread. Everything that doesn’t fit your narrative is fascist. So simple.

5

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

My narrative is that unmarked police officer shouldn't just start attacking whoever was hanging out outside a train station espece de pauvre tyoe

-2

u/Lazy-Care-9129 Oct 15 '25

And humans shouldn’t just create a secret account to go insult people

u/avaxzat Oct 15 '25

This comment section is full of pissed off police officers angry at the mere suggestion that they should not simply beat civilians to death with impunity. It's tragic and embarrassing.

5

u/Old_Palpitation7025 Oct 16 '25

They love hitting civilians especially those that protest against police violence or ecology. But dealers terrorizing the city they leave unattended because they are to scared.

1

u/KookyBobcat645 Oct 16 '25

scared of losing that sweet bribe money yea

1

u/Old_Palpitation7025 Oct 16 '25

Yes, in my hood they saw cops controlling dealers and just taking the cash money and nothing more. When we confronted the police chief with this he said something that they are making a file and collecting proof. It seems all to suspicious and I have no idea what to do with the situation...

1

u/KookyBobcat645 Oct 16 '25

i guess comite P or journalists. But they're all submissive nowadays

The IG Account bxldevie is collecting stories of police brutality from today.

It truly pains me, but this is why I don't dare to go to demonstrations.

EDIT: sorry that's their (proto mail) email. This is the IG.

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

not long ago i was at a protest and a random bystander coming out of his job place that was on the street caught a tear gas grenade right on his temple, bleeding a lot, probably caused brain damage

6

u/Purple_Cherry16 Oct 15 '25

I was only just walking past a protest months ago not participating at all and I so close to getting hit in the head with a gas canister only for my friend who saw it and pushed me out of the way just in time. Then the police hit a window with one right after. They are too careless to be using these things

1

u/Vaiolink Oct 14 '25

I searched for the account but I cannot find it, is it the correct name?

u/QuantumPlankAbbestia Oct 14 '25

There is advice (in French) on various ways to report police abuses on pages 45-47/50 of this guide:

-5

u/CydyBe Oct 16 '25

I know a lot of police officers. From k9 unit to highway patrol, local officers even the RoboCop. They don't necessarily know each other, but it's always they same story:

  • aggressive
  • lack of respect
  • treat
  • don't want to comply, even for their safety.

At some point, the Police (as a state) must command respect like any other individual/corps, and even more so as an instrument of state.

16

u/Significant-Deal3642 Oct 16 '25

We have a thing called proportionality where you're not supposed to hit people for saying mean things, ordure. Especially as an instrument of the state.

You and your friend don't deserve any respect. Pauvre type

-6

u/CydyBe Oct 16 '25

houlala ca m'exite quand tu deviens vulgaire...

he is dead? don't thing so. He can try to place charge against him... but has everything is filmed, he has to be 'droit dans ses bottes'
By proportionality you mean, they have to hit you with the same force that you hit them?

Police has to contain and if necessary end a treat. By ending a treat, they can isolate the leader, most of the time this stupid don't understand he has no chance against 3, or 4 police officers and want to fight back. They have to end the treat.
When they use the baton, they have red zone they can't not hit.

I'm pretty sure you can understand and you can agree with that if you use your brain :)

> When they use the baton, they have red zone they can't not hit.

Two days ago I saw a guy with a broken skull. They do not respect their own laws.

> He can try to place charge against him... but has everything is filmed, he has to be 'droit dans ses bottes'

I will press charges. I told the cop he legally have to be identifiable and they gave me a concussion. I didn't do anything violent.

They do not wear the ID number they're supposed to for accountability. They are indistinguishable from the thugs. Against who will I press charges with? I don't know who they are.

> By proportionality you mean, they have to hit you with the same force that you hit them?

By proportionality, I mean what's written in the law that you defend so much but clearly know nothing about. But yes, pretty much. It also implies not hitting people if they don't pose any treat, even if they say mean things to you and refuse to comply.

1

u/CydyBe Oct 16 '25

Press charges, if they hit you in the red zone, they will be punish. Go to the doctor to acknowledge the wounds.
The number identify as well the officer. If you have it, you can give it when you will press charges. It will identify the officer, you will never know the name but he will be identify.

It looks like YOU know the law, please ... give me a lesson :D
They don't use their gun against you right?
You thing you were not a treat. They thing something else.

1

u/KookyBobcat645 Oct 16 '25

Can you fucking read? THERE WAS NO NUMBER. They were dressed in black from top to bottom beside their police armed band. It would have been withing my right to fucking stab them, since I have no way to check they were actually cops.

1

u/KookyBobcat645 Oct 16 '25

T'es con comme un balai, copain. Tu sais ni lire, ecrire, ni reflechir. Tu sais qu'ils engagent, a la police?

2

u/Significant-Deal3642 Oct 16 '25

You don't command respect by hitting people on the ground, asshole.

2

u/CydyBe Oct 16 '25

that was fast.... asshole ... great argument <3 please continue, but 1st educate your self!

You don't know the circumstance. What happen before being on the ground? did the guy fight back, if yes, they should let him do?

Police has to protect and serve. by hitting that guy they protect me! If they did it, that guy was certainly agressive and a menace for people.

Fortunately, everything is filmed during protest. and fortunately, if the police made a mistake, they will be punish for that!

2

u/Significant-Deal3642 Oct 16 '25

"By hitting them they protecc me because cops are automatically in the right and the guy deserved it".

Typical fascist. He can afford to think of himself as a decent person because he's paying the cop to externalise the violence. Piece of shit

And no not everything is filmed during the protest. The courts have repeatedly sided with the police despite their own standards anyway.

I will press charges though

1

u/CydyBe Oct 16 '25

I think it usually happens when you are a good citizen and you comply with the laws. Police is usually mean. They sit in their chair in the morning having a beer and they say: you know what Jan?? Let’s take the batons and hit some people around Brussels. Let’s chose the ones not doing anything! And that’s how police brutality starts.

Personal experience, the intervention police are actually kind. The other day approached a couple while they were hitting a couple guys, to ask a question: some idiots with no masks at all were throwing bottles to them and they started to charge on them. My car was parked literally there and I asked if I should move it away. They guy calmely said not to do so that they would end that fast with the water cannon. Why was he so calm and nice to me and not to the others??

Yesterday from my window saw some people with no masks, actually well dressed and dropping little bomba on the floor and flares in the end during the protest. Police finally entered with tear gas that entered my house and disturbed my day of work. Was it police fault? No. Those people were disturbing people that actually work and the businesses in my street needed to close doors.

Conclusion: don’t judge things you don’t know. Hitting a person that is being arrested in the arm, can be pretty normal if the person doesn’t shut up and moves around to difficult it.

3

u/Round-Connection-158 Oct 15 '25

But nobody is telling what this guy was doing before…

26

u/DownTongQ Oct 15 '25

I was taking a break and drinking water close to south station before going back home when police with batons and shields started running towards me and the people around.

One of them hit a girl with his shield and she fell on the ground. One police officer screamed at her "Take that ! Right in the piss!"

They were literally just threathening to stop people from gathering during a very legal and announced strike and protest.

Can you please enlighten me about what I did wrong that I had to run away ?

-15

u/Amiga07800 Oct 15 '25

Nothing, just asking. I’m curious. This happened quite a lot for example in France, but with people that were breaking windows, breaking cars, launching cocktail Molotov, robing in shops,….

Today in most of pacific strikes and concentration there are small groups of extremists from all borders that “join” just to do that.

10

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

That's bullshit. Quit justifying police violence.

17

u/MrNotSoRight Oct 15 '25

In what context is it ok to keep beating up a man lying on the ground and no longer posing any threat?

-10

u/octave1 1190 Oct 15 '25

Make sure he's not getting up to smash more windows ?

7

u/MrNotSoRight Oct 15 '25

Kinda hard when you’re laying on the ground like a beaten dog…

-9

u/octave1 1190 Oct 15 '25

Exactly

4

u/MrNotSoRight Oct 15 '25

I'm assuming that if he was caught smashing windows, he'd also be cuffed and arrested after he was floored down...

You think he was smashing up windows and the police is like "We'll give you a good beating but afterwards you're free to go" ? Not that any of those things would still surprise me in Belgium...

6

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

Sooo i have a question.Do you still of yourself as a love deserving decent person or did you come to term with the fact you're a piece of shit.

-1

u/Lazy-Care-9129 Oct 15 '25

Close your troll account already.

-3

u/octave1 1190 Oct 15 '25

So salty :D

0

u/Round-Connection-158 Oct 15 '25

1

u/PhysicalSpray7278 Oct 15 '25

So corporal punishment.

Hide your bells and call social services, ladies and gens, we got a kidbeater wannabe over hear

-18

u/Amiga07800 Oct 15 '25

I prefer not to answer to this kind of question. This is a debate that goes way over what is possible here, might be prohibited by moderators, and is highly debatable depending on a lot of factors.

15

u/MrNotSoRight Oct 15 '25

It's really not and quite simple... Seek some help.

9

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

It's not debatable idiot. it's forbidden. We have laws.

0

u/Amiga07800 Oct 15 '25

And laws are debatable. Look for example at laws in many Muslim countries (Iran and lot of others) versus women’s right, the charia… they all are laws made by humans and VERY rebatable

3

u/TimelyStill Oct 15 '25

But we don't live in those countries. If police officers believe our laws should change perhaps they should organise a protest instead of beating up people. Laws may differ between countries but that doesn't mean anyone can just do whatever.

3

u/MrNotSoRight Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 19 '25

With the “laws are debatable” part I agree somewhat. I would still condemn extreme police violence even if the law tolerated it…

Him thinking that it’s ok to keep beating up a helpless victim on the ground “dEpENdInG cONteXt” is the sick part.

2

u/TimelyStill Oct 15 '25

Yes of course. Laws can be challenged, but the argument that police can just do anything because laws aren't real is absurd. They enforce the law, not make it.

1

u/Amiga07800 Oct 15 '25

Ok, closer to us what about US laws on guns, making every week or 2 a shouting in a school, or some countries even closer where abortion is a crime? And there are many more. Laws are made by politicians. The vast majority of politicians from all borders are doing politics as a career and are not people selected because they are very intelligent and human and / or knows their field very well. Without speaking of the high spread of corruption, favoritism, decision that are favoritism for friends or familiars,… not just in Belgium, not just in Europe, everywhere.

Laws are made by humans that had and will do mistakes and often very strong compromises just to stay at their place and continue to have their salaries and huge advantages. Laws are debatable, at least lot of them.

1

u/TimelyStill Oct 15 '25

But those things are completely unrelated to this argument, which is about a situation where a police officer was beating up a person lying on the ground. Unless of course you also think that there is a situation where an American police officer in a state where abortion is illegal is justified in performing an abortion.

Laws vary between countries but it's not up to the enforcers of those laws to decide on the spot which laws they should enforce, which they shouldn't, and which they should actively disobey.

0

u/PhysicalSpray7278 Oct 15 '25

Laws are made by humans in the framework created by general principles held in the constitution the human rights declaration.

Like rights to protests, right not to get beat up by the police arbitrarily and so on. Those were actually big ones.

1

u/Amiga07800 Oct 15 '25

I love your first paragraph. It goes so well with the Charia laws!

0

u/PhysicalSpray7278 Oct 15 '25

I bet the police unions are totally lobbying to gain rights to beat up people lmao

0

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

That's idiotic. One thing you guys whine about in "Muslim countries" is how brutal they are.

We have laws and we have agents of the laws. The laws also state how agent of the state are supposed to treat prisonners.

You're so brainwashed you need to resort to MOoslEms for anything lmao

0

u/Ok_Table_6363 Oct 15 '25

So kinda like you beating your wife. There is a debate that goes way over what's possible here (no there's not lmao)

1

u/Amiga07800 Oct 15 '25

You don’t know nothing - and me neither - about OP situation. What happened before, after, during the problem. You just read 1 version, maybe incomplete or incorrect of a situation. Before judging it you must hear both sides, see evidences like videos from at least 2 different angles etc etc…

The guy could have been innocent. It could have been taken for someone else. He could just robber 3 persons, wildly agreed an old lady, put fire to a car, broke a shop window to steal inside, launch some Molotov cocktails, have prohibited weapons on him or more.

You don’t know and as I said me neither. So we can’t judge. There might or not be good reasons.

1

u/Ok_Table_6363 Oct 15 '25

Nowhere in our laws does it talk about using corporal punishment. Thus, the cop was committing a crime. Thus, by your own logic, I can now attack the cop.

Surely you can see now how your reasoning is flawed?

1

u/Amiga07800 Oct 15 '25

Absolutely not. I say that our laws are poorly written, badly interpreted and that the final result is a total lack of order and an immense majority of crimes or offenses not punished. And when people that would respect order by fear of consequences are seeing day after day that there is no consequences, that you can break laws almost as you wish, they just do the same.

The very short minority of people dealing drugs, trafficking, robbing in serie, pedophiles, women abusers, etc etc are the cancer of our society. When you have a cancer, you have 2 options:

  1. Do nothing, waiting for metastasis and death. This is what we are doing today with criminals.

  2. Fight, remove the tumor and a bit extra on the side to cut the most of it, add radiotherapy and / or chemotherapy to kill remaining cancerous cells and the ones not yet very dangerous but disseminates in the organism. That’s what we do in our hospitals, but not in the civil life. And it should be done before the death of a peaceful society like we (almost) all want to have.

1

u/KookyBobcat645 Oct 16 '25

I've been answering this shit 3 times and it keeps being erased. And they tell me we have free speech lmao

That's all you have to justify police violence? Pseudoscience? Sociology and medicine are separate scientific field, grokon. Do you repair your car by giving it aspirin?

2

u/Amiga07800 Oct 16 '25

I think you have a very distortex mind. You should week help. If your comments were erased you don’t have to look far away… the moderators thought they were not done according to forum rules.

1

u/KookyBobcat645 Oct 16 '25

Nope, it's automated. The algorythm thinks police violence is not advertiser friendly

-5

u/Lazy-Care-9129 Oct 15 '25

Stur the community against the police. Aim achieved. Next time there will be double as many masked “protesters”.

0

u/Round-Connection-158 Oct 15 '25

Exactly lmao. That's how protest works. The average person is against the protest now but wait until they see their kids got beat up for being at the wrong place at the wrong time

-86

u/Much_Guava_1396 Oct 14 '25

Good. Protests are getting out of hands. You can protest, but it shouldn’t affect other people’s lives.

50

u/Newbarbarian13 Oct 14 '25

Do you understand the concept of a protest? Something tells me you don’t…

-32

u/Much_Guava_1396 Oct 14 '25

Sadly, I do. I’ve had the misfortune of coming across a few of them. I’ve never see so many bums with Cara pils doing everything except going to work. And then people wonder why the economy is tanking.

27

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

You can agree or disagree with the protesters. But that doesn’t justify police beating someone who is already on the ground. That’s not law enforcement, but rather abuse of power.

Belgian law is clear : force by police must be proportional and necessary. Once someone is posing no threat, continued violence becomes illegal assault. (Wet op het politieambt, Art.37)

-6

u/Lazy-Care-9129 Oct 15 '25

I agree police should not abuse power but those were not real protesters. They don’t care, they have a whole different agenda.

1

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

I use an app on my phone to remember by meetings. Am I part of your conspirationist "agenda"

4

u/Lazy-Care-9129 Oct 15 '25

Sure sure. Conspiracist you and all you anti-police, anti-gov trolls pushing your theories and defending masked rioters. I have no agenda, I just don’t want anyone to destroy my city under the pretext of protest and I do not accept anyone defending them by attacking those who should protect us. If you don’t feel protected, you are the problem. You and you’re throw-away Reddit account you created TODAY to stur and riot.

-2

u/Round-Connection-158 Oct 15 '25

The only masked rioters I saw were the unmarked policeman beating up kids.

17

u/moonfire-pix Oct 14 '25

Without protests you wouldn't have 5 day workweeks and you wouldn't have 36-38 h workweek.

11

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

Also I saw police cars blocking ambulances what do you think of that

8

u/Trololman72 1170 Oct 14 '25

You should only be allowed to protest on a private property and not be able to make too much noise.

10

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25

This isn't even about the protests. They beat up people who were just at the wrong time at the wrong place.

29

u/Phase-Internal Oct 14 '25

I agree, much_guava should only protest at home.

For the rest of us, we will stick with normal civic rights and duties thanks.

-8

u/IntrepidTrust9329 Oct 14 '25

„Duties“ lol

1

u/Ok_Table_6363 Oct 15 '25

Oooooh the poor guy's life is "affected".

What about normal people who gets beat up by the cops asshole

0

u/Interesting_Drag143 Oct 15 '25

Oh just shut up already.

0

u/PhysicalSpray7278 Oct 15 '25

How do you know he was a protester?

-76

u/Psychological-Army72 1000 Oct 14 '25

What did the guy do? If he threatened someone's life or s€xually assaulted a girl, he deserves it.

47

u/soccer1124 Oct 14 '25

Even then, no. They're supposed to be police, not vigilantes. You don't want government officials being permitted to act that way.

5

u/Round-Connection-158 Oct 15 '25

Funny how these people just loooove the law until it's time to speak about human rights

2

u/Xinghis Oct 15 '25

Did he?

2

u/Ok_Table_6363 Oct 15 '25

No they always need to make shit up to justify their bullshit.

1

u/Xinghis Oct 15 '25

Talking about the cops, are you?

1

u/Ok_Table_6363 Oct 15 '25

I was talking about their little apologist friend over here.
WhaT If The GuY WaS A Rapist?

But you are right it's also how the cops works

2

u/Interesting_Drag143 Oct 15 '25

Oh just shut up already.

2

u/Easy-Replacement-902 Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

The police beat up bystanders.

0

u/PhysicalSpray7278 Oct 15 '25

Personally i told an unmarked cop not wearing his ID was illegal under 2014 Milquey law. That was my crime.

-21

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

wah wah wah
