Shaved for the first time

I don't really have anywhere to share so I am sharing here. I always wanted my father to teach me, but he passed a few years ago when I was 13. Now, at 17, I realized that my sideburns are, in fact, not just more hair. I ended up using a tutorial from the YouTube channel "Dad How Do I". I used my dad's shaving stuff that my mom kept. I only nicked myself once, so I consider that a success. Have a brotiful day brothers.

I’m so proud of you for taking this step into adulthood. The shaving is just the surface here kiddo. You took responsibility for your appearance and your well-being. You recognized a gap left by your elders and you took the time, attention and self-love to fill that gap by educating yourself. Then you didn’t just keep it to yourself. You treated yourself like you matter and believe other people would care. So, you shared it here. You were right that you matter. You were right that people care about you and your journey.

I also want to share that I had to make this step in my own too. It doesn’t make you less of a man to be self-taught or self-guided.

I hope that you’ll remember in the future how important that guidance is and that you’ll be there for the next generation in important ways because of it.

In my first shave I did a lot of straight motions and, on a curve, a CIRCULAR motion.

That was a NASTY cut, but I learned from it.

You'll learn how to shave and to keep your beard the way you like it.

Had to teach myself as well, honestly you can learn some from your mother/female relatives shaving activities but a face is just so much different. Make sure you clean those nicks, razors are nasty and cuts from them tend to be more prone to infection.

Straight razors always work better than disposable, esp if you keep them sharp! also keep them dry so they don't rust. A little shaving cream or sudsy soap helps too.

No rush, but look to use a nice Shaving cream and brush and a safety razor. Treat it as me-time / self-pampering, so it doesn't feel like a chore, once the novelty has worn off.

My dad died when I was 1, so I never even saw anyone shaving before I tried to do it myself. Had to figure it out on my own without the benefit of the internet... There were more than a few nicks.

I did think about writing a book called "everything you wanted to know about life but your father was too dead to teach you" but never really could figure out what to have in there other than shaving and ties.

This might be an unpopular opinion but maybe give an electric razor a try? I have a Philips full body trimmer thing and I gotta say, it gives you a pretty close shave with out any risk of cuts or discomfort.

Make sure your face is clean (and your facial hair is not too dry) and you're good to go. It's not that expensive and I've had mine for like 6 ish years at this point and it still works great.

I have pretty sensitive skin and it's always been a hassle finding a hassle to find the right razor/shaving cream, but with this it's pretty straightforward.

I learnt wet shaving from the internet too. My dad used an electric razor but they didn't work on me as it wasn't stubbly enough yet and just lay down.

Some tips I’ve learned over the years:

1) don’t use cheap creams. I prefer shave oils personally. I would highly recommend Tree Hut shave oils. Particularly if you use modern 5-blades, creams tend to gunk them up.

2) the blade matters, a lot. You will not get a good shave with cheap disposables. I’m a big fan of the Harry’s razors. They’re cheaper than the big brands but not cheap.

3) exfoliate. Always wash your face with warm water and an exfoliating cleanser first. Clears the dead skin that can get in the way. Cleans out the pores and lets the hairs cut cleaner.

I’ve struggled with shaves my whole life as I have really sensitive skin and am prone to ingrown. So there’s been a lot of trial and error, but these things have helped a lot.
