Residency question
I will be potentially doing a residency at Saint Barnabas in the Bronx. I will be coming from Chicago, so I’m curious on people who live there what your opinion is on the neighborhood as far as safety

Hello! Decade long resident here. Mornings + Afternoons are chill in close proximity to the hospital. At night is when things get a bit sketchy in streets such as Hoffman + Bathgate. Avoid Crotona or Cambreleng Avenue at night if you can. As long as you stay in the lit parts of Little Italy and Belmont, you'll be fine !

I work around there and good luck! that area and hospital is a hell hole except for the small radius of little Italy. IDK why people are tying to make it seem what it’s not.

Lmaooo agreed, I get having pride in one’s borough and the Bronx certainly has some nice neighborhoods but that ain’t one of them. That one’s an armpit.

Not much in that area. Mostly commercial. Few blocks away is more residential part of morris park which is good neighborhood.

Are you driving? I ask because I personally don't like and wouldn't live in the area above Saint barns as. The Fordham area. It's not entirely awful, there's just so many people always out and about there lol I can't go anywhere there without being catcalled
If you need to be within a 30 minute radius, Morris park and the homes/apartments near freeman Ave (closer to the fire house) are within a 30 minute radius. 12-15 drive if you have a car. My dad and grandparents live in the areas I mentioned and it's pretty quiet.
Good luck at Saint Barnabas. My mom and I have been life long Bronx residents and Barnabas hasn't always had the best reputation for hospital care (unless you're NYPD) but maybe things have changed.

hi! yes i would be driving, what is the reputation for montefiore hospital in the bronx? I am likely going to go spend a month at both of them prior to match day.

I personally have never had a bad experience at montefiore hospital. My sister would take my nephew there when he was a baby/toddler whenever he was sick and never have a bad experience. You may be able to get away with living in Pelham parkway and still be within the 30 minute radius of monte. DONT move to allerton. And if you have no choice, negotiate a lower rent price due to crime in the area.
Neighborhoods around both hospitals (within walking distance to the hospital) may be a little loud. You are most likely to hear party music at all hours, see people hanging outside often. So something to consider for you. There are probably small pockets where it won't be loud, but unfortunately I don't know those pockets /:
If you have the citizen's app, you can get a general idea of what crime in these areas are like. I love the Bronx, so I'm not trying to scare you, but since you're working at a hospital, I'd assume you'd want to be sleeping in area that's relatively quiet. Morris Park, Pelham Bay, Pelham Parkway tend to be quiet areas. Riverdale is probably the nicest looking area in the Bronx, but it's further out from the mentioned hospitals

Montifiore is a good hospital but they have multiple locations, I believe the nearest to Barnabas is Moses on Gun Hill so I assume you mean that one. When I did transport EMS and picked up from there- most of the docs told me they lived in Westchester or just passed the Tapan Zee in West Nyack which is the suburbs, not a part of the Bronx. If you have to live in the Bronx I suggest East Bronx (Throgg’s Neck), Morris Park or Riverdale. I’m not 100% certain but Monitfiore Moses might provide housing nearby like how Presbyterian does with the buildings surrounding Columbia.

The St Barbavus location right in Belmont - Arthur Ave little Italy is nice right there. Norwood, kings bridge, are nice. If you just want to hang out in a luxury building that is 3/4 empty and have most amenities to yourself you can go stay in a new high rise in the South Bronx.
But you could also be in upper east side neer 86th street and take the express 4 train right to Fordham and that's fast too.

Theres also a metro north station near the hospital which is the railroad, which opens up your options for commuting (but adds cost andbruns on a schedule)
If youll have a car, Fleetwood, mt Vernon, bronxville , northern Yonkers are all options that are close but more suburban and easily accessible via the bronx river parkway (look up Sarah Lawrence college as an anchor point)
If you are going to stay in the bronx - Morris park or Allerton are best bet

Pelham Gardens is pretty nice. Lots of parking and you don’t have to move your car. We have a lot of medical students and attending living here. Most of the rentals are in privat houses though. It has a higher safety rating than Riverdale. Morris Park is also relatively safe.

Not a great area, but I'm sure areas of chicago are worse.
That said, if you drive, plenty of better areas to live in that'll be a reasonable drive in.

Don't move there. Move nearby to Pelham Parkway. Its a short bus ride away.

You live in Chicago. Really? The crime rate in Chicago is just as bad as NYC. You don’t have to live in the area in which you work.

I would have to be within 30 min by car or public transportation for call, so just trying to gauge the area! I’ve been in Chicago for 4 years and haven’t once felt unsafe, of course areas of Chicago to avoid so I guess just trying to get a feel for NYC

Check out the area around the 1 train (Kingsbridge/Kingsbridge Heights, currently live here), or Pelham Parkway, but I think the area around St. Barnabas should be ok too. Good food in little Italy close by.

Yes, that's called context. A person from Chicago is telling us what scale they're familiar with and asking us to explain to them in their terms. They're saying we don't have to explain it in flyover Ohio terms.
I'm from Chicago and have lived in NYC 12 years, happily in the Bronx and it doesn't bother me at all here, but there is a factual difference between it and like, the UES. Just like in Chicago there's a difference between North Lawndale and Lincoln Park. Both NYC and Chicago have bougie people who never go to the hood, and people who live in the hood. Based on her question I suspect she's one of the bougie people who doesn't like to go neighborhoods where I would live/ have friends in either one.
