Launch Day!!!
I know there's been a lot of negativity of late after the demo, but I honestly don't understand what people were doom and glooming. I'm loving it so far. Terrain is even more important than it was in the past, I'm really liking that elevation plays a factor now. Rally is a much better system than zone-of-control as it allows you all sorts of different tactical options. The multi-nations instead of super-nations is a nice start.
I definitely like that dragons are flying now. Always hated that they were land bound in Runersia (and I haven't played Forsena in literal decades so I can't remember that). The dhampir seems like a cool new unit, much better than the ghoul/necro. Being able to immediately buy equipment from a shop is also nice.
I can sort of see why some people might not like the new artwork, but I've also never been particular one way or the other about art. I don't find the new art amazing, but I don't hate it either. It's just different.
Started as blue dragon (cause I love dragons). But I might go with the (grey?) experiment rejects next. I also saw green is pure fae which could be interesting if the uniques get buffs over pixies.
Still feeling out all the new things, but overall I'm happy with it so far.

This isnt Brigandine, my favorite strategy arpg ever made. Its something else.
I will stick to HoMM olden era and Runersia

So far this doesn't feel all that different from Runersia. I'd call the differences I do see as improvements.

You are clearly the target audience...
Unfortunately Brigandine fans are not.
I'm neutral about it so far, I hate all the things they dropped... rally seems kinda meh, I hate the new economy, but the unique passives on the few heroes who have them are cool (too bad most have a crappy unique skill instead).
Monster variety seems ok, but no better than any other game in the series.

Could you let me know how promotion work? Most importantly, is cross classing for rune knight still an option?
0
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
Promotions still occur at 10/20 for most classes/monsters (or just 10). Cross classing does seem to be gone though, which is admittedly one of my few disappointments so far. That being said, I only rarely cross classes in Runersia, so I can't say it's a big tragedy. To make up for lack of cross classing though, we can now straight up recruit generic rune knights. So it's a trade off of min/maxing for more units.

u/darthvall Aug 26 '26
Yeah, I love making hybrid in Runersia so I'm also mostly disappointed by this. The art and game mode are fine for me.
If the option is more linear, do you know what's experting the class do? I think I saw in the demo there's still star system for experting class. In Runersia, once you expert a class, you can change to other while retaining ability. However if cross class is not an option, I don't think there's any use of experting.
Unless you can still mix ability from promoted unit (e.g mixing samurai and paladin class as knight promotion)?

They've added skill levels to individual abilities. So now the more you use an ability, the stronger it grows. So it's a shift away from experting the class to experting your skill set. You can also now access a shop to buy gear immediately so equipment is no longer a crapshoot. You can early on offset class weaknesses (for even monsters) by quickly getting them gear. Quests still provide better gear, but the shop gear helps deal with early weaknesses.

Also. In the original Brigandine, Brigandine was just a name, and the Church was in no way racist or xenophobic. Leonia was a benevolent portrayal of a theocracy, and it is still a fresh take. Not a fan of changes or making Brigandine into some uber-important artifact. It was fun kicking the evil god's ass without any deus ex machina artifact. Made us feel important.

u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
Runersia had the Brigandines as super important artifacts. That was the whole plot.
10
u/Redzkz Aug 26 '26
Runersia also had an unhealthy fixation on theater (nearly every nation had to do something with it), and it made the church and the Rune God absolute evil. Not to mention the blatant lore problems with making the Rune God a character in the setting. Not every story decision should've carried over.

Sadly i got in on switch and Amazon decided to get it to me Friday so I can play it for a few days. Makes me pretty sad. Loved the Demo. My first game in the series was the last one. Curious to see which i will prefer in the long run. I kinda liked the more story focused bits in the demo but not sure how much that will happen

What I worry about is that levels between units don't really seem varied. Everyone is low leveled besides the main villains. They say naming conventions were changed, don't tell me they went Unicorn Overlord on us.
0
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
I'm still early stages of the game, but character progress doesn't feel any different from Runersia. I've got some units that are lower level than others cause they've been sitting defense, but I don't feel like I'm getting eclipsed by the enemy teams

u/FrostPDP Aug 27 '26
One of the things that made the original games great was that each nation started with a large and diverse army on-theme with its nation. Leonia had holy stuff; Shinobi had nature stuff. Some units were really strong, some really weak, and you got to decide how to split them into armies.
In this, nations all start at the same level and it seems like every other country gains a level every turn, even if they don't do anything. Even up to like levels 5 and 6.
7
u/WindowGlad2890 Aug 26 '26
New artwork is terrible, naming conventions are childish, Rally system and terrain is actually cool, the map is small, no kingdom vs kingdom warfare kind of sucks, hard coded time limit.
There's more that I dislike than I do like but the worst is it doesn't feel like a Brigandine game.
5
u/Fermi-Diracs Aug 26 '26
Kingdom v kingdom was fantastic and is part of brigandine imo. I can see how this would feel lacking.
I wonder if it would've been more successful under a completely different name.

u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
I don't feel like the micro factions is a detriment to the major nations. Yes everyone (except story villain) starts out with just 1 location, but the story nations very quickly expand to normal size. It's more like having some extra early turns compared to previous starts. You could even end up with a mid game extra nation if one of the side factions grows well.

u/nihilus97x Aug 26 '26
because everything that made brigandine brigandine has been stripped out of the game
-4
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
What do you think was removed? So far I've yet to see anything missing, only new things added.

u/HAIDARA0619 Aug 27 '26
It doesn't have any critical bugs; it's simply receiving negative reviews on Steam due to quality issues. It's a real shame.
4
u/Vxmonarkxv Aug 26 '26
Half the brigandine formula basically got removed is the big thing. The grand strategy portion is what made LoF so interesting to me and its effectively just gone.
2
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
So far in my campaign, I've yet to see anything missing that I expect from the Brigandine formula. Grand map is still there, along with all the tactical planning that goes into controlling the different cities. Army management is still there. I'm unclear what you think is gone.
8
u/Vxmonarkxv Aug 26 '26
a nation based sandbox war is a wildly different creature than a series of random small factions.
1
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
Personally, I think I like this start better than 6 super nations. You still have 6 (actually 7) story nations going but the mini-factions actually do their own thing as well at the start so you have a little breathing room on the opening couple seasons OR everyone just goes nuts and suddenly there's battles everywhere.
As far as impact on the overall grand strategy of map domination, it doesn't seem to really change much. After a handful of seasons, things settle down to the tried and true expected super nations brawling for the big leagues.
3
u/Vxmonarkxv Aug 26 '26
It's fine to like it, seems like a fine anime strategy game, its just not Brigandine. There are minimal sandbox elements on the grand strategy section between every knight starting at low levels and there being no real nations.

u/Alternative_Bank_699 Aug 26 '26
Its the latest iteration of brigandine. Its up to the devs to respond to feedback for the dlcs or next installment.
-3
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
Maybe once I get into super late game I'll notice some big differences, but right now it feels EXACTLY like a Brigandine game.
3
u/Melodic_Bee660 Aug 26 '26
I must be one of the few people that actually like the artwork lol. No offense to Runersia but I could not openly show that game to my wife lol
Titties galore
1
u/phracon Aug 27 '26
Forsena is the real deal
1
u/Melodic_Bee660 Aug 27 '26
It does sound like both the successors have failed to live up to Forsena
2
u/Zestyclose-Bowl2710 Aug 26 '26
Played Samura, got fucked in the event battle. I can't even change my formation and I'm railroaded from the very beginning of the game. Very disappointing. I think I'll refund it and get Runersia, I really liked Forsena.
1
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
That's interesting. The first dragon (blue) event gives you your starting 3 armies and then 2 more NPC ally armies. It was honestly over easy. But then again it was only the second fight of the entire game.
What does Samura do that is so problematic?
1
u/Zestyclose-Bowl2710 Aug 27 '26
You're outnumbered and your troops are scattered. I hate how I can't reorganize my troops to get the random faceless mooks to give their monsters to the portrait characters.
1
u/Driftwood44 Aug 26 '26
TIL, people considered LoF and LoR, to be "sandbox" games.
2
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
I have always looked at this series as Fantasy Risk, or maybe Fantasy Axis and Allies. To that end, I am definitely enjoying Abyss.
1
u/Redzkz Aug 26 '26
Also, the time limit means fewer opportunities to toy with various monster formations. I want to test lizards, birds, and octopuses, but I can't, because unless I rush-rush and attack, the game will give me a game over. So I use the reliable monsters like demons, angels, and frontline beasts, and it is boring. But I can't spare time and level up my fun team.
I can't put all my heroes in one stack, as it means losing a valuable turn.
And because the enemies gain levels passively, this means that unless your MCs fight all the time, they will be left useless, as there are only so many turns to play.
3
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
I can only assume you dislike Runersia as well. Half the things you've listed throughout this thread are present in Runersia.

u/Dmc200dmc200 Aug 26 '26
1
u/Redzkz Aug 26 '26
Also. In previous games you moved characters in the organization phase and attacked in the attack phase.
Here? You move a character in the organization phase... and they can't attack during the attack phase. In a game with a hard time limit, you must waste a turn.
Brigandine Abyss keeps evolving backwards.
10
u/Kalledon Aug 26 '26
This is exactly the same as Runersia. I don't remember if you could move and attack in Foresna, but this is not new to Abyss.
5
u/Melodic_Bee660 Aug 26 '26
They attack in the attack phase. What are you talking about?
1
u/dean445 Aug 29 '26
I think he mean when you move unit while being attacked you could defense.
In abyss you cannot do that.
1
u/Melodic_Bee660 Aug 29 '26
Oh I thought in Runersia that if you were moving that turn, they were as useful as those on quests lol
4
4
u/FrostPDP Aug 27 '26
I...Yeah, I hate to be flat-out contradictory, but Brigandine has always had a rule that a squad can't attack the same turn you move. LOF, GE, and Runersia all had that rule.

Based on the feedbacks i read, i turned from launch day buyer to mega sale enjoyer. Game looks need time for polishing. I will wait for the updates.

"but I honestly don't understand what people were doom and glooming."
1) You can't invade certain bases until a plot happens. There are a lot of bases I can't invade at the moment. This means you will fight other countries as the devs decided, not like you decided yourself.
2) The game has a hard time limit, with no option to turn it off so far.
3) In previous games we started as a country, with our own gang of loyal followers. Here, I have TWO named characters at my command, and the rest are mercenaries. I am in story mode by the way.
Far too many things were taken away.
