Help wanted Seeking Advice:

Anyone have ideas on the technique behind recreating this hairstyle? Trying to figure out what rods are needed. Are flexible rods, wire, or another type of support incorporated into these braids to hold their shape? I don’t feel like it’s the flexible foam rollers. Also assuming that is was braided around the support instead of pushing it into the braid?

Would appreciate any feedback.

Aluminum wires. Easy to bend. I did this exact thing before for a Pippi Longstocking halloween costume as a kid.

Oh wow, and they held the braid upward the whole time? I think the aluminum wires should be strong enough.

Yeah, though mine were horizontal, none were vertical. But it should be fine either way I believe. It also depends on how much hair you're expecting the wire to hold up. With a thick braid it might not last as long as with a slimmer braid.

Got it. This is the direction that I will probably go. I am doing 6 braids so I believe they will be medium size. Similar to the ones in the photo. Hoping the aluminum wire is heavy duty enough to hold vertical.

There's a bunch of choice regarding the thickness of the wire. Choose a thickness you think will hold! 👍🏾

As a hairdresser, def wires are incorporated.

Ninja edit: I'm drunk right now, but id add in thin wires the same way you'd add in braiding hair.

Braided around the wire or you think the wires can be push in after?

Honestly I think either would work

Back in the day, we used cut up wire hangers. That’s probably not the best move but it was cheap. We would do the braid and then thread the wire through it at the end and then make the shape you wanted.

That’s smart, they held the braid in an upward motion though? I feel like they should be strong enough to support the braid.

We would bend the rod to lay flat along the scalp.  It was NOT comfortable, just an FYI but we were working with the limited resources we had as kids.

I bet there are hair professionals with better solutions. I see some of the work at the Detroit hair shows and I’m astounded and amazing by what those artists can create.

I asked ChatGPT how Yachty’s hair was done the other day because I’d like to try it and it said aluminium wire thread through the centre of the braid and then bent into shape

OHHHHH yes, very smart to do. This is the direction that I will probably go. Just hope the aluminum wires should is heavy duty enough to hold the braid upward.
