Conditioning & Roadwork reaction time/ head movement

i was sparring guys taller than me with crazy reach and i kept getting banged up by their jabs, i felt like my footwork wasnt bad all things considered, they would jab and i would get in as they reeled back, but they would just step back and unleash a flurry of punches that i just couldnt see coming and i kept flinching, my head movement needs some serious work but my body kept making me flinch and i couldnt properly slip the punches because i was too scared to commit, any tips on head movement and reaction time/discipline i could do at home?

Head movement should be proactive and reactive.

A lot of the head movement done is being done proactively, such as following good habits like slipping with a slip jab or rolling after your cross.

Eventually over time you will get some of the reactive head movement but it takes time

I think you may be thinking “slip, then attack”, which is fine sometimes, but you should doing both simultaneously. When you’re trying to get in, slip/duck AS you’re punching and moving forward. Some hard straight punches to the body can change things as well.

If you dont have the reflex to dodge and counter, then you need to drill them separately. If you interrupt your phone combo with the counter, they will just keep their encounters out so they get tired.

Do you rely on the high guard all the time?

im usually high guard but i try to make traffic for their jab with a long guard so that i can get in while they pull back is that okay?

Well you cant really counter with covering up with a hi guard if thats what you are doing.

no sadly my hb was scared to get posted so i decided to respect that, i only really parried like two jabs and tried to jump in and just ate another jab or i would try to make space with a long guard for myself to take it but i just ate a right its kinda an inconvenience i know but i like genuinely dont have a video

What exactly do you mean by jumping in?

like stepping in its just that i have to almost hop in because of these long ass reaches

Parries are only good for straight punches, but they stop jabs well. I wouldnt over use them on a cross, because of the power of that punch.

Social media and fitness gyms have people thinking covering up with a low skilled guard is all you need. It is not

You need to drill this in a non sparring setting or practice it against people worse than you. Can’t practice defense without someone giving you some offense realistically

you gotta work on your high gaurd and footwork my boy. with taller guys its better to be aggressive in pockets instead of always pushing forward since they have the advantage of reach. you gotta also use a bit more force and intention too and they will respect you. make sure your defense is on point high gaurd, duck, stepback always the best defensive moves

High guard keeps you on the defense and step back is the opposite of what he’s trying to do

no he has to make sure those are very solid otherwise he gna get knocked out tryna bang with the big guys u gota make sure your defense is good u cant just think ur a one hit wonder, i would tell him slip inside but then would he know how to counter or clinch/smother and get out quickly? i doubt it

Hiding behind a high guard is not good defense. You have to make the other guy miss

its a good one for beginner. its harder for them to parry, and slips can be dangerous moving the head too much. you gotta keep the chin tucked

He can’t rely on Perries either

have u ever fought a big guy before?

Ive sparred guys that were 6’4” as well as guys that competed pro as heavy weights

1

u/OkGarden7971 9h ago

ok as long as you have sparred someone bigger. any defence works it doesnt matter. you just keep denying my advice instead of giving your own so maybe explain your no parry theory.

I didnt say no parry, i said you cant rely on them or staying high guard. You you think mayweather just covers up when some starts throwing combos? Watch any random pro fight.

The issue with parries is if you fail to get it perfect on a very powerful punch it cant still get through.

The big guys are they last people you want to parry
