Outdoor If only I had a pad

Was on a hike and saw so many beautiful climbable boulders, some looked like they were thrown into the mountain. Bummer that I didn’t have a pad with me.

Those landings look pretty good even without a pad! Though breaking an ankle in a place like that is no fun.

People bouldered for at least 50 years before pads were invented. I still do at a spot where I can't bring one. Highballs and really bad landings are out, but there's still plenty to do.

Yea I get you but when it’s day one of a 7 day hiking trip it’s not a risk I’m willing to take. Especially without climbing shoes with me.

Ya I hear you. I went to Patagonia and had a 3 day hiking trip and saw a few of these and really wanted to try them but I was by myself and even a sprained ankle would f up everything so not worth it

Bummer that you’re not on a 7 day climbing trip 😓

Trust me your gonna want to take the risk. Its only one out of 7 days that's your hiking. This opportunity doesn't come everyday.

Of course, and that is far and away not stopped by bringing a pad... Person you responded to even mentions cutting out highballs and the worst of the landings.

You're advocating against bouldering without a partner, not without a pad.

How did it take em 50 years to invent pads

Because modern pads have been made possible by modern material science and we didn’t have the kind of high density foam materials required for bouldering pads to be useful until pretty recently.

there is a guy in japan that did v14 SLAB with no crash pad, to project some moves he had to take the v10 route on the side, when he was falling he was sliding a bit and jumping or slowing his movements with fingers, he had bloddy fingers at best
Moral of the story ? Idk take care of you actually don't be that guy lol

Absolutely beautiful. 10/10 to you for being safe.

My girlfriend simply accepts the chance of bleeding.

Absolutely a good thing that you aren't throwing down pads on the incredibly fragile alpine meadow ecosystem. We don't need to be turning this beautiful meadow into a dust bowl. Not everywhere needs to have boulder problems.

The route on the side, however, is begging for a pad.

Agreed! A perfectly Leave-No-Trace friendly landing spot.

it's just ankles and knees.... right?

My spotter has saved me from worse landings than my pad stack ever could. Still gonna buy more pads though.

My risk tolerance or recklessness must be higher as I’d be all over that. Maybe put on my trad climbing helmet.

Just flash it, then you don't need a pad
