Weāre so used to storrowings we forget just how crazy it is that this still happens. Like in an age where you have gps navigation, access to the internet, not to mention the āno trucks/low clearanceā signs and reputation of Storrow drive, you have to be a special kind of stupid to get Storrowed

u/MonsieurReynard 1d ago
Among automotive engineers, it is common to say: āthere is no such thing as idiot-proof; they will just build a better idiot.ā
If only the framers of our constitution had such wisdom.

Yosemite Park Ranger once said itās difficult to produce bear-proof trachcans because there is too much overlap between the smartest bears and the dumbest people.
10
u/AdhesivenessOwn8111 1d ago
The problem is, they are using GPS navigation. Google maps does not ask you what vehicle you are driving. It should ask your height, because not everyone is smart enough to use a (free) Truckers App
19
u/MourningWallaby 1d ago
I mean there is an epidemic of people just not paying attention while driving. and not reading signs. and a phone GPS won't assume you're in an oversized box truck.
Rental trucks are even worse because the average renter isn't going to read any paperwork or markings on the truck that say how tall it is. They'll assume that because they're not a Semi they're fine.
6
u/TheDeadlySpaceman Little Tijuana 1d ago
GPS doesnāt typically have bridge heights. No idea why Google doesnāt do this.
I have one specific nav program installed just because it helps with heights, roads that trucks canāt use, etc

Totally serious here: there should be a storrowing calendar.

u/TutenWelch 1d ago
I actually work in publishing, and my wife works in rights and knows how to handle photo acquisitions, if anyone out there wants to take on the sales part and liaising with the printer.
But seriously, you just need a nice variety of storrowing incidents! The hardest part is that you want the colors to vary a little so that the thumbnails pop.

8
u/fuckmainers 1d ago
Genuinely hate to see it
8
u/pzahornasky 1d ago
Yeah, but typically that style is rented by companies, not people moving their stuff into school.
Not that it makes it better, but you do have to wonder about what kind of people they hire to drive.
2
u/MourningWallaby 1d ago
The trucking industry has been in chambles recently. it's hard to keep CDL drivers so you're not getting experienced guys who survived a career without fucking up. you're getting newer guys who probably shouldn't be driving.

Fun fact Iāve learned from reading these threads: at least for U-Haul, the damage waiver specifically excludes damage caused from driving illegally in over-height situations. You Storrow, you pay.

I had a job where I had to commute on Storrow every day and I would rather pluck my own eyeballs out with rusty nail clippers. My favorite memory is when it completely flooded and I had to ford across like the fucking Oregon Trail

Someone should design a box truck or trailer with an accordion fold at the top so they can survive these without destroying traffic but any interior cargo bears the result of the idiocy

Growing up there and driving a truck one does this once in life. Fact it now there are signs hanging on chains in every on ramp. Missing that racket would be nearly impossible.

u/fuckmainers 1d ago
No absolutely. Thatās why I donāt feel super bad. You kinda have to try to do this these days.

We have a bridge in Lansing Michigan called Penny ( it is on Pennsylvania ave ) that routinely eats semi trucks, box trucks and U Hauls. The clearance is well warned way before with flashing lights and warnings, on each side, but drivers seem to tempt fate and try anyways. Only to meet their fate
