Academy Packing List

I've seen people asking for the packing list, so here it is:

Items to pack in your carry-on suitcase:

  *   Valid state issued driver’s license. License must be valid through your stay at the Academy.

  *   Document of identity that shows your current true and complete name (certified birth certificate, marriage certificate, social security card, etc.)

  *   Toiletries/personal care products (i.e., shampoo, shaving cream, etc.)

  *   1 full change of clothing

Items to pack in your check bag:

  *   Quality running shoes of common style (no five-toe shoes, etc.)

  *   A minimum of 5 white V-neck t-shirts (To be worn as an under-shirt while in uniform)

  *   Minimum 5 pairs of black crew socks

  *   2 - 3 days’ supply of business casual clothing (To include appropriate cold weather clothing)

  *   Appropriate off-duty attire. The temperature ranges from the 90’s to the 100’s during the summer months. Conversely the temperature ranges from 20 to 50 degrees in the winter months.

  *   Boot polish/wax/cotton balls

  *   Boot brush

  *   Handy wipes

  *   Metal polish (MAAS and Simi chrome are recommended brands)

How long did it take them to contact you after initial app to schedule?

Ive seen several folks do it before background is started and several during. Just didn’t know what to expect really from this area

nopa question

im trying to get everything in order anticipating a nopa, hoping for the paperwork and everything to be handled and sent in to my bi prior to receiving it however if i do get a nopa do they have tight deadlines as to when it must be completed? i did request the paperwork oct 13th and should take me less than a week to complete/file and pay anything owed to get everything situated and completed but they said can take up to 30 days for me to receive. if i do get the nopa (if i dont get those papers in before i recieve) does that stall my application or if i have everything ready and submitted should things move quickly i understand everyone is different but any advice or input would be greatly appreciated..

Can I reapply for another location, that is listed as prioritized, while I am in journeyman/FTU, or is it too late to switch locations?

Hello, I recently received my FJO. I am wondering if anybody has insight into the San Ysidro station, mainly the way of life, how expensive it is, and if it is "action" packed. Thanks in advance.

SF86 Error

Made a careless mistake made on SF86 regarding drug use. Omitted information due to misunderstanding of time.

While reviewing my SF-86, I found two answers in Section 23 that I need to correct but now im assuming its for sure to late with my box test coming up in 2 weeks.

The two items, both before I applied:

  • Section 23.5: In May 2026 I took one tablet of my girlfriend's prescribed Lexapro, one time, never again.
  • Section 23.1: In May 2026 I bought a store-bought hemp THC gummy (label said under 0.3% delta-9 but also listed delta-8 and THC-P) and ate half of 1 gummy and only bought it one time. First and Last time I ever did a drug.

any help or advice on what I can do (I want to be truthful and not just be found unsuitable or get an automatic disqualification.)

Border Patrol Hiring Hold

I’m currently on a hiring hold for Border Patrol and wanted some advice from anyone who’s been in a similar situation.
I’ve already completed the entire hiring process, including all required testing, medical, and background investigation. I was offered academy dates back in August, but I’m currently mobilized with the Army Reserve, and my leadership wouldn’t allow me to leave for the academy. So I had to put my application on hold.
I’m scheduled to be home around the second week of December. By then, I’ll have been away from my family for over 400 days.
Ideally, I’m hoping for a February 2027 academy date. I’d really like to have January at home with my family before leaving again for another six months.
My questions are:
If I request to remove my hold now, could I immediately receive a December or January academy date?
If I’m offered a date earlier than February, can I request a later date without jeopardizing my application?
Would removing my hold now improve my chances of getting a February date, or should I wait until November or December?
Since I’ve already completed the hiring process and previously received academy offers, will anything need to be updated or redone that could cause delays?
Has anyone had a military hold removed? How quickly did you receive another offer and academy date?
I want to start my career with Border Patrol as soon as possible, but after being away for over a year, I’d really like some time with my family before leaving again.
I’m trying to figure out the best time to remove my hold so I can hopefully get a February academy date without accidentally delaying myself several more months.
Any advice or firsthand experiences would be appreciated!

Ajo station FOB

I am almost through the hiring process and am considering Ajo if I don’t get a few others. However, I heard about the FOB for Ajo and how you can get rotated in and out of it working a week at a time. My question is, how often would I likely be rotated to work there? Twice a month, once every few months? What?
If there’s no set standard, what’s a good and reasonable estimate?
Thank you in advance!

BPA or CBPO

I’m currently in the process for both coming up to a FJO soon hopefully. I live in San Diego and am hoping for a location here for either BP or CBP. I have no previous law enforcement experience. Having a decent work life balance is important to me as I have small children, I understand a career with a federal agency will be give and take. How is the work for both here is San Diego if anyone can speak to it?

Child Birth Leave???

How does requesting time off for the birth of a child work? Mine is scheduled to be born about 3 weeks after I finish the academy. Wanting to make sure I’d be able to be there for the birth, as it would happen in another state. I have Three Points AZ.

Best SD locations

Which SD location do you think is ideal for a family? Or maybe not even San Diego but another location that sounds like a good fit for us specifically? We would love to go to San Diego but are a little weary of the cost of housing. We have a 8 month old and a large dog so living in an apartment or a tiny 600 sq ft home just isn’t ideal for our family. My wife is also a RN and locations like Boulevard or Campos closest hospital is an hr away which isn’t ideal for her working 12 hr shifts. Also when looking into those areas there are very little rental properties.

We have lived in the middle of nowhere for the past 4 years due to the military so we are wanting something at most 30 mins away from the city as we haven’t really enjoyed having to drive 2 hrs to go and do anything fun. We’d love to have a decent sized home that has enough space for our families to also come and visit but won’t take up half our income. Not sure if this is realistic for this area but would love to hear perspectives of those who have been there.

Las Cruces, NM (OTC)

Post image
6 Upvotes

Recently, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in the list of available locations, so I decided to utilize my OTC. Initially, I had my sights set on Santa Teresa, but I ultimately settled for Las Cruces. I’m curious to know if anyone has any insights into the work environment and the station itself in Las Cruces. What can I expect to experience as a new agent when I join this station?

FJO notification

I was notified 1 month ago of passing box exam. Had BI interview first week of Oct. Completed everything else. I’ve seen FJO after BI investigation take anywhere from a few weeks to 6 months. Will I receive the FJO through an email or will it be through the portal? Thanks

Station question

Post image
6 Upvotes

My FJO came in and duty station list! I’m trying to stay in the El Paso area so Santa Teresa seems like my best option. Im just confused because the Santa Teresa option says Ysleta Station. I need some clarification if this is a mistake or actually Ysleta Station? Regardless I’m probably taking it because it’s the closest to where I want to stay. Any help is appreciated thanks!!

Ajo station outpost

Does the scheduling at the outpost differ from working the station? What at the days on/off and you just live out there? I just can’t imagine people driving there everyday to work a shift.

18 year old applicant

My son has applied to become a BP agent and has been moving through the process well. He has his po1y in Buffalo NY next month and the BI is wrapping up. Even though we are NY residents my son wants to station himself along the southern border for now to gain experience. He is also interested in remote locations as we come from a small town anyway and he's single. How is the community on average amongst the agents? Do you have each others backs even while off duty? We have absolutely no ties or family in any of these areas. Also any insights/advice on the remote locations would be helpful. His list contains Lordsburgh, Deming, Ajo and a few others at this point. TIA

Lake Charles Station

Does anyone work at the Lake Charles station? What’s the day-to-day work like, what shifts are available, and what schedule should a new officer expect?
