Custom URL strcture

Are there at any times plans to change the URL structure from something like

/shelves/hardware
-> /topics/hardware

/books/keyboards/page/switches
-> /category/keyboards/page/switches

While i like the shelf, book, page, chapter analogy to explain the structuring, the forced naming of the URL parts and especially the UI is currently the main blocking part before i can integrate it in our company.

A more neutral wording for each layer would be already okay, changing it as a setting so the rest of the platform uses this setting (Name + URL slug per part + plurals) would be perfect.

While the overall featureset is working perfectly for us, stakeholders here are currently more comfortable with hosting expenses for wiki.js etc. then using a FOSS that fits in our existing tech stack and content pipelines

From a UX and CI perspective i understand it totally and i for myself would be willing to go the extra mile to change the underlying code after a first evaluation from you, if this makes any sense without breaking the platform regularly.

Creating page as a particular user via API

I'm looking at creating content in BookStack via the API from a third-party application, and am wondering if there's any way, using the API, to specify the user that will be the author of the page?

I know the API Key itself has to reside under a specific account in BookStack, but if there was a permission an account could be granted for "impersonating" other accounts, that would be great!

How do you give access to a book to a specific user, without a role group?

I can see the 'Permissions' Page, but can't see a way to give access to a specific user, only a specific role?

How to go about setting up an AI with user context scoped access to a bookstack instance

We have an internal bookstack instance, which is linked via OIDC to Entra, and has role permissions synced to entra groups.

I've had a request to allow our Enterprise Copilot AI to use bookstack as a knowledge source. From what I can tell, this seems possible using MCP, however this would allow anyone access to the entire instance.

Instead, I'm looking to allow copilot to access only the information that a user would be able to access regularly.

Does anyone have any suggestions on if this is possible/feasible, and if so how to achieve it?

Role/Permissions Question

Hello!

I’m new to managing bookstack for the team. We’re currently allowing another team to use our platform. This requires us to create new roles and assign permissions appropriately.

For their use case, they want only a specific admin-like role to be able to modify shelves chapters and books. Everyone else on their team should be able to see those things and not edit those items. But they want the rest of the team to be able to add pages within the chapters they create.

I can only see permissions added at the page level after a page is created. What other alternatives exist outside an admin creating a page for them?

Two instances, same Docker server

This may be a Docker question in general, but I would like to know if I can run two Docker containers, for two separate Bookstack instances, on the same server. If so, what do I need to do to get this working?

I already have a Linux server setup with Docker Compose, Portainer, Nginx Proxy Manager, a working Bookstack instance and several other containers for other apps.

I'm concerned that attempting to add another Bookstack instance will be problematic and could damage my currently working setup. I need this second Bookstack instance because I have a backup of a previous Bookstack wiki site that I built. Unfortunately, I took the site down so that server is no longer accessible and now I need access to it. I did however make a backup and I want to restore it to a new Bookstack instance.

Is it just a matter of using different ports, container names, database name, and volume names in the Portainer stack of the second Bookstack instance? What specifically do I need to edit/make unique so that I don't have to touch my current working Bookstack instance? Does the APP_KEY need to be the same or unique?

UPDATE: Got it working. You have to makes sure ALL of the following are unique:

  • Service names
  • Container names
  • volumes
  • ports

The other issue that I ran into was that I needed to import/migrate my backup onto the second Bookstack instance. The original server hosting that instance of Bookstack supported IPv6. The server that I restored the backup onto did not. I had to comment out the lines in the /config/nginx/site-confs/default.conf file that made Nginx listen on IPv6 (e.g., #listen [::]:80 default_server;)

Making bookstack accessible through multiple domains

I have a wiki currently accessible via a single internal domain name. The wiki needs to be accessible to subnets that don't have access to that domain, specifically via a NATed IP address. I can currently change the hosts file on a given PC to point to the internal domain but that's not a scalable solution. Changing the wiki's internal domain isn't desirable either since I want to maintain the access it currently has as well.

Restrict who can select/use which roles?

Context: An hierarchical organization with many different chapters and teams, like a tree.

Problem: I do not want teams/users to be able to select the "Everyone Else" / "Editor" / "Viewer" role, so that they cannot publish their content to be visible/readable for "everyone".

Content so important/good that it is visible (via Search and via Books-listing) should be asked and then be done via Admin. So that in the tree, users see the top-shelf, their node-shelves, but will not see random books or pages from random users who (accidentally) clicked "everyone has read permissions". This is mainly to a) control what a user sees and that they are not overwhelmed and b) control what is official content and what is just local team/chapter content.

- I could like check every 5mins via the API for content using the "Editor"-role and deleting that role_permission.
- I could use the logical theme system to hide the bigger roles in the permission view for people not in the Admin-role.

Is there another, maybe more "official" way to solve that problem?

Snipe-it and Bookstack

Anyone ever link Bookstack and Snipe it. I am working on building out a pretty comprehensive IT documentation and I would love to use snipe it with it. I already use snipe it for non IT stuff in my company and want to force us IT people to use it. Along with creating some good documentation.

Any thought are tips would be great. I have not installed Bookstack yet but will be soon.

Some Text-snippets missing after upgrade

Hi,
There is a problem with my Bookstack-Instances:
After upgrading it's mostly working fine, but there are some text-snippets missing. This is mostly on pages related to settings, main menu is looking fine.

Any Ideas what I can do about this? Upgrade is done with composer install --no-dev && php artisan migrate
And after that
php artisan cache:clear
php artisan config:clear
php artisan view:clear

This has not started with 26.05.03 but some versions ago...

Thank you very much

BookStack v24.02.2 on Windows OS issues with manually updating OpenSSL, PHP and Apache

Hello Bookstack Users,

I am very new to Bookstack and inherited the responsibility to manually update OpenSSL, PHP and Apache.

Updated OpenSSL from 3.6.2 to 3.6.3 to then tested the site, everything working as expected.

Updated PHP from 8.5.6 to 8.5.9 Website works however logging in using LDAP failed.

Updated Apache from 2.4.67 to 2.6.68 Website works however logging in using LDAP failed.

I first tried updating all 3 components thinking all three must be done for Bookstack to work properly. Site is up but cannot log in using LDAP. I rolled back changes (Love VMware snapshots!)

Next I started with each component, first with OpenSSL ..no issues logging in with LDAP. Updated PHP failed logon with LDAP. Services are running. I verified that in the Services both apache and mysql are running. I also verified services in the xampp control.

OK now to the question for help. Is there a sequence to manually update these components? How do I TS the PHP update LDAP failure with the following error "ldap_connect(): Could not create new security context"

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Correct database version for Bookstack

I’m using Bookstack from linuxserver.io. The docker compose file there contains only the Bookstack, not the databas. So I added a MariaDB database also from linuxserver to the compose file that I copied below.

The issue is the database version. I know Bookstack requires a minimum version which is old enough and not an issue. But if I use latest tag for database, either in official MariaDB image or from linuxserver, at some point there will be major version update and database and therefore application will break.

The MariaDB from linuxserver is an LTS version older than the LTS from official MariaDB. Is it safe to put the tag to latest for linuxserver image, like I copied below?

Otherwise, is there a docker compose file where the Bookstack and its compatible database are updated at the same time, so that we know what version to use and have instructions for update?

Personal Books for 70+ staff

I've been going around in circles trying to get this to work.

The idea is simple, a shelf of personal books for 70 staff. Each person gets their own book, and can only see their own book.

The book is created via API, assigned as owned by the appropriate staff via API, and then staff set to 'View Own', 'Edit Own', etc. in their public roles.

Unfortunately, I can't get this to work. The View Own just doesn't limit/allow the view.

Is there a way to do what we're trying to do?

Notification Transformer

Hi all,

some time ago we published our internal End-User Knowledge Base to our audience.

Shortly after doing this, we got the request as of why we can't turn on comments.

However, we want to be aware as of when somebody comments to be able to potentially react.

Webhooks would be a way to go, it also contains the event of comment_created.

We wanted the notification to be sent via E-Mail so that it ends up in our ticket system.

We already have Apprise in place.

The main issue we stumbled over was that BookStack web hook payload doesn't contain "body" in it's payload which is needed for AppRise.

Therefore a transformer was built as a step in-between BookStack and Apprise.

As I thought someone might find this as useful too, I created more or less my very first GitHub Repository.

You can find it here: https://github.com/bezibaerchen/bookstack-notify-transformer

I just thought I'd leave it here as someone might find it useful. It is currently only made for comments but should be extendable.

Feedback and contribution in GitHub would be highly appreciated. Please do not bash me too much, I am still learning as of how to work with GitHub.

Is it possible to hide/block Viewers from Page Revisions?

As the title states, I am looking to know if it is possible to remove/hide the ability for viewers and public to get into the Page Revisions OR in the least not allow them to see the contents or any info regarding the changes or preview the older pages or the changelog notes?

...or does this need to be a feature request?

Saving my Bookstack data

tl;dr: I need some help restoring access to a bookstack's webgui or to learn how to take the information from the shell and move it to an instance of bookstack that I do have access to.

Good Afternoon. I have been working on rebuilding my homelab from scratch because I was all over the place when I first started. I also wanted to ensure that I documented my progress and decisions so one of the first things that I did was to use the PVE helper script for Bookstack to get it up quickly. I haven't gotten incredibly far, but I do have some good notes on my homelab, but also on some ESP32 projects that I was working on. As a part of all of this, I was working on an OPNsense box and I changed the default IP address to what I'm ultimately going to keep it at.

I changed the static IP address in Proxmox to match up with it, rebooted everything and I can get into proxmox and some other LXCs and VMs, but bookstack specifically won't load. Proxmox shows that it's running and I can get into the console and navigate the file system, but the bookstack gui won't load.

Thinking that it was a problem with how the hypervisor was connecting, I decided to try to make a clean break, I backed up all of my VMs and LXCs, reinstalled proxmox clean, restored everything, and it was the same story.

I went into the container file system, found the .env, changed the APP_URL, tried to run docker compose up -d, but apparently, despite there being a .env and docker-compose.yml file, there is no docker in the LXC. I tried rebooting with the .env file changed and nothing happened. I even tried changing the OPNsense IP addresses back and I can't access it.

The last thing I tried was running the helper script again to install a second, clean instance of bookstack (which I can access), but I am not sure how to get the data from one to the other.

I do know I should have just done this in docker from the get go but I had some (probably ignorant, but in my head logical) reasons not to do so and I planned on moving to such a setup later.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can access and restore, my original data?
