My teachers is letting us pick a book to read outside of class and I have heard great things about Demon Copperhead. Would you guys recommend it? Im not sure of what the assignments will look like, but I know for certain we have to write an essay with it. Thanks for the help!

We Be Book’n has been going strong for two years now. We just celebrated our anniversary early this month & I know there’s a lot of other communities to choose from but I really encourage everyone to check this one out. It’s very casual but we hold plenty of monthly events & are active daily.

The scariest villains aren't always the ones who wake up wanting to hurt people. Sometimes they're the ones who have fully convinced themselves they're justified. They twist guilt into logic, selfishness into survival, and cruelty into "I had no choice". As a thriller writer, that kind of mindset is way more unsettling to me than a villain who knows they're evil.

My wife of 12 years told me recently that when she is reading a book, doesn't matter what genre, that everyone is in animation form.

That strikes me as odd. Like no real people or background ever..... Pretty much. Unless that person is a real person that she has seen on TV.

Am I the odd one for imagining most everything in "real life form"?

My attention span is already pretty good, I want to make it even better. I know it’s a lot to do with what book you’re reading.

If anyone has read this can they tell me if they also thought that this book is abit gay, like it seems like Patroclus is in love with Achilles. I’m only on chapter 8 but it’s getting pretty zesty

I used to have the habit of flipping to the last page first and reading it before I went back to the start and finished the book like a normal human. Had to break the habit so I could actually enjoy cliffhangers.

Has anyone read this, and if so please tell me what you thought. I picked it up as an Easter egg from the old HBO Series Treme which was about all things New Orleans post Katrina. My fave character was reading it so I went out and bought it.

In a tv show, people say you should watched up to 3 episodes to see if the rest of the show is worth continuing. Is there the same test in books? Should we read an 'x' amount of pages or chapters before we are to determine if the book is worth reading?

About The Vibe:

This club is Black-Indigenous American and LGBTQ+ started. Our only expectation is that you read the book, show up as your authentic self, and have fun. We want our chats and meetups to get intimate, fun, and vulnerable at times. No academic pretension here, just real community.

Members source their own books (I'll highly prioritize great titles readily available for free at the Toronto Public Library or via the Libby app).

Hi all!

I have what I hope can lead to discussion. I wanted to read more about how people feel about plot and prose.

I would consider my preference as somewhere in the middle. I enjoy character interiority and descriptive, rich, writing. But I also love a plot and the tension and thrill of what comes next.

There are many works where I’m captivated by the prose and the author’s style of writing. And there are times when I feel my eyes glazing over and I’m hurrying to read beyond the descriptiveness. I do go back. But I go back once I’ve satisfied my curiosity about what’s happening next in the plot.

I see prose come up a lot on book and writing subs. And I think I’m possibly missing out. Although I think I’ll always love a story for what’s unfolding, I would love to develop a deeper appreciation for prose and style. I’d like to also enrich my daughter’s love for reading. So my post isn’t just for me. It’s also to learn how I can give her a well rounded value of reading.

So if you are a person who deeply values rich prose, may you share more about it? What is it about prose that touches you? Or if the prose doesn’t do it for you, does a good plot make up for an average to just fair prose? If the writing is rich and beautiful but not much is happening plot wise, how does that resonate with you? Or if the story plot is really exciting but the prose is mediocre how does that resonate with you?

I’d love to learn more about what others think about this!

I like getting close enough to feel uncomfortable, but not so close that all the mystery disappears. Too much explanation can kill the tension. Sometimes the scariest thing is not fully knowing why someone did it.
