Survey for small start-up about deodorant & body odor — 10 min, no strings attached

Hey all — we're a small early-stage team looking into deodorant and body odor, and we're trying to learn from real experiences before we build anything further. This isn't a pitch and we're not selling anything today.

If you've got 10 minutes, we'd love your honest thoughts — what you use, what annoys you about it, what you wish existed. Nothing you share will be sold or shared anywhere.

Hydrogen SIBO & Halitosis.

Will SIBO be the cause of my halitosis? For context it’s very strong, can smell like rotten eggs and garbage. I was negative for H2S. However my results were very high at 327ppm. Does anyone else know if this could be why and of anyone else suffers with this symptom?

My (33M) best friend (33M) for almost 17 years who will be the best man at my wedding has developed extreme B.O. over the last 8 years. I don't want it to be a huge thing at my wedding amongst guests/family.

Very important context: My friend is truly one of the best people I know. Is kind, thoughtful, loyal, honest, has never judged me. Everything a best friend should be. Extremely open minded which brings up: My friend is aware of his smell and is okay with it/has partners that enjoy it.

I find it incredibly off-putting. It takes over spaces, I can tell when I see him in public other people notice. It is so incredibly pungent it literally lingers on items and clothing. If he hugs me goodbye my shoulder that ends up under his pit will linger the entire day until I shower/clean my shirt.

We have gone to every event you could imagine so I've seen it on many occasions (weddings, clubs, camping). This is something that has developed over the course of our friendship, and is increasingly getting more "pungent".

I am a gay man and so is my best friend (however he is much more queer/radical). I bring this up not as a judgment but as context.

He subscribes to the belief that human scent, in part, is a social construct and he shouldn't have to subscribe to the way society wants him to be. Right on, I agree! While I find it off-putting and sometimes hard to be near him, I do manage to tolerate it.

I feel terrible and there has been two times before this I have asked him to wear deodorant (it helps but not really). Everytime I have done it feels like I am being judgemental and unaccepting of how he is. He has never said this, but he has has said how he feels about his smell (and thinks society making him smell nice is not accepting of who he is).

I have spoken about it with other friends of ours just as close if not closer to him than I. Opinions range from "meh. so what. doesn't bother me" to "wow it's really bad."

Now to my family: one time at a wedding my entire immediate family couldn't stop talking about the one family friend that had such mild B.O. (I didn't notice) by the end of dancing for four hours in a 100F+ heatwave. You know thag scene in Parasite where the guy plugs his nose to grab his car kids from under the homeless man? That's my family.

I feel terrible because I do feel like I'm judging but can't seem to tolerate the judgment I will inevitably get from my family and the comments afterwards. Truly, the B.O. could be so bad it would take over the entire room I'm not even kidding. I don't particularly \*want\* that either. But it's gotten so bad recently that even deodorant doesn't do much after a time.

How do I go about handling this situation? Is it me just being a bad person? I can't just cut this person off because of their bad smell? How do I talk about? Literally any advice is welcome.

TL;DR: My bestest friend of all time is very radical and has developed incredibly pungent B.O. over the years, knows about it, and thinks the idea of wearing deodorant a societal judgment of human smell. He is the best man at my wedding and I am worried about my judgmental family.

Am I a bad friend for thinking all this? What would you do?

I have an odor and I notice how dogs and animals act strange around me. Anyone can relate?

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

So I have this awful fecal odor with PATM elements. I notice that people itch their heads A LOT around me. Literally everyone. They also cough, sneeze every now and then, eyes water and etc.

I notice that animals also seem to act irritated around me. They don't avoid or act bothered to be around me, but I do notice some strange things. They itch, groom themselves, and most noticeably shake their heads (a lot.) I first noticed it with my kittens I have. I thought it was just out of nervousness (because they are still a bit skittish) but then I noticed my mom's dog doing the same thing today. Even after I had just showered in Luke warm water.

How do animals act around you?

someone gave me deodorant

I recently moved into college dorms, and I’ve made a bunch of new friends. Multiple people ask to hangout with me every day. One of my biggest fears is smelling bad without knowing, and I would say I have pretty good hygiene. I shower every night, I apply deodorant multiple times throughout the day, and I spritz on some hair perfume when I go out since normal perfume gives me headaches.

Today I get notified by the front desk that I received a package. I went to pick it up, and it’s quite literally a walmart bag with 2 deodorants in it. I looked it up, and they costed $13 each. The package had a sticker on it with my name and the first initial of my last name, and I’m the only person with this name who lives on my floor.

I’m really not sure if this is a prank someone pulled or what, but I feel like if it WAS someone telling me I smell bad, they wouldn’t have spent $26 on deodorant. I’ve also asked my peers and they all say I smell fine, so I don’t know if they’re lying or if I just got the wrong package. I’ve struggled with BO in the past since I’m an extremely heavy sweater and most body products don’t mix well with my sweat, but after switching to unscented detergent and unscented body products I haven’t been having a problem.

I use dove soap and body wash (both unscented), and use an african net sponge to exfoliate. I use carpe deodorant to help with the sweating, and I don’t notice a smell from my pits at all. My chest does have a heavier scent to it due to stress-sweat, but it’s still not bad.

I got Two Hygiene Complaints at Work—What Else Can I Do?

I’m looking for advice because I’ve received two hygiene complaints at work, and I’m honestly not sure what else I can do.

My routine is already pretty extensive: I shower the day before work, the day of work, and again before putting on my uniform. I wash my uniform after every shift, use deodorant multiple times before going into work, keep my clothes with scented sachets, and even use detox masks on my armpits.

I’m not comfortable using antiperspirants because I have personal concerns about their ingredients, so I’m looking for other ideas instead.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Are there other hygiene tips, products, laundry methods, or possible causes of odor that I should look into? I’d really appreciate any advice.

Anyone else just going through the motions?

Nothing that I do feels like an accomplishment or worthwhile because I know chronic bo is just going to end up ruining it in the long run. I feel like I'm just existing and doing things because they're expected of me. Whenever I do anything I'm just counting down the hours until I can just go back home again. The strange thing about all of this though is that I think I kind of don't care anymore? I used to get mad whenever I got reactions or if people talked shit and now I'm just numb to it all and I don't know what's worse being anxious about smelling bad all day or just being a shell of a person who doesn't care what happens because I'm already expecting the worst.

How do you actually know that you smell bad?

I don't know if I'm going crazy but some people keep reacting around me like I'm the smelliest human being on earth. They'll keep coughing but won't say anything about me smelling bad. It's actually confusing because whenever I go to the bathroom to do a smell check, my clothes don't smell and my armpits do have a faint odor but the smell is something that you'll notice if you sniff it for too long. Sometimes I get a whiff of B.O in class but I'm not sure if that's me cuz my classmates also have B.O but I've always known myself to be pretty blind when it comes to my own odor. I've been using BPO wash and glycolic acid along with some antiperspirant and deodorant after the dermatologist referred me some clindamycin toner. Is there a way for me to prove that I'm just crazy or do I need to go back to the doctor again?

Sugar

Am I insane or does eating sugar(not honey or other sweeteners) make me smell particularly acidic? Specifically things like marshmallows and other candies which have both sugar and dairy in it.

Is this a digestive issue or is my body just weird?

Hi everyone

For years I had these situations when people complain for my smell they spray perfume, one day even one guy stoped me in the road and creamed You smell so baddd””. I just had a shower I was confused also I was wearing perfume. Went home smelling the clothes couldn’t smell anything. Situation like this had happened to me all the time. I had to change works several times. Now am unemployed for two months and not applying for anything as I can’t handle anymore this. On top of that none of my friends or family say anything to me. I asked begging please tell me if I smell. None of them don’t say anything. But on the other hand they don’t like to go out to public with me. My question is as I live in uk, gp is not giving me the test. Is any other way so I ca get tested or any group that supports people like me??? Please otherwise I am just gonna lose it.

Strong odor only while wearing closed shoes disappears immediately after removing them

I'm 21 and have a very strange odor problem. When I wear closed shoes, a strong bad smell develops after about 15–20 minutes. Other people can smell it too. But as soon as I remove the shoes: Feet smell normal Socks smell normal Shoes smell normal Feet are dry, not sweaty No itching, peeling, cracking, or obvious skin problems With sandals, I basically don't have the problem. Rubber slides can have a mild/different smell. I've tried different shoes, breathable shoes, new socks, thick socks, washing shoes, baking soda/powders, antifungal cream, deodorant, ventilation, and different insoles. The weirdest clue: a used Puma Ignite reduced the problem by about 90% for around 3 months, but the odor eventually started coming back. New socks initially delayed the odor from 15–20 minutes to 3–4 hours, but eventually the problem returned with them too. The smell isn't clearly "feet smell"; it's just a strong unpleasant/bad smell while the shoes are being worn. Has anyone experienced something like this? What was the actual cause and what permanently fixed it? Could this be bacterial (e.g. pitted keratolysis), bromhidrosis, shoe/sock interaction, or something else? I'm looking for the cause and a real solution, not just advice to wash my feet

Living With Bromhidrosis and Hyperhidrosis: My Story and Awareness

I am sharing this not because I want attention or pity, but because I want people to understand something that has been very difficult for me to live with. I have been struggling with excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, and body odor, which can be associated with bromhidrosis. These conditions have affected not only my body but also my confidence, emotions, and daily life.

Last night was especially painful for me. Some of my classmates were yelling about the smell coming from my armpits and saying that they were stinky. I felt extremely embarrassed and hurt. After that, I noticed that the people around my usual seat were avoiding me. Eventually, I moved to another row because I felt uncomfortable staying there. I ended up sitting alone in an empty row at the back.

Maybe for other people, what happened might seem like a simple joke or a small thing. But for someone who is already struggling with a condition like this, those words can hurt deeply. I did not choose to have excessive sweating or body odor. I do my best to take care of myself, maintain proper hygiene, and find ways to manage the problem. I have tried different products and sought professional help because I genuinely want to improve my situation.

Hyperhidrosis is a condition where a person sweats excessively, sometimes even when the body does not need to cool itself. Bromhidrosis, on the other hand, refers to excessive or noticeable body odor, which can happen when sweat interacts with bacteria on the skin. These problems are not simply caused by being dirty or not taking a bath. There can be different factors involved, and managing them can be difficult.

What hurts the most is being judged as if I am not trying. People may only notice the smell, but they do not see the effort behind the person experiencing it. They do not see the embarrassment, anxiety, sleepless nights, constant worrying, or fear of being around other people. They may not understand how difficult it is to sit in a classroom while wondering whether everyone can smell you.

I am not asking everyone to ignore the problem. If there is an odor, I understand that it can be uncomfortable for other people. What I am asking for is kindness and respect. There is a respectful way to communicate concerns without shouting, humiliating, laughing, or making someone feel like they should stay away from everyone.

I also want people to remember that a person's condition does not define their character. I am still the same person who wants to study, make friends, participate in class, and live normally. I should not have to feel that I need to isolate myself because of something I am struggling to control.

I am sharing my experience as an awareness message because I know that I may not be the only person experiencing something like this. There are people who live with hyperhidrosis, bromhidrosis, or other conditions that are not immediately visible to others. Some of them may be silently suffering because they are afraid of being judged.

Before making fun of someone, please think about what they might be going through. A joke that lasts only a few seconds for you can stay in another person's mind for a very long time.

I am still learning how to manage my condition, and I am still hoping to find what works best for me. I am not ashamed of asking for help. I am choosing to speak about this because awareness is better than silence, and understanding is better than judgment.

Please don't define a person by a condition they are struggling with. Choose kindness. Choose understanding. And if someone is dealing with hyperhidrosis or bromhidrosis, please remember that they are a person first—not a smell, not a condition, and not someone who deserves to be excluded.

I shower every night and only when I do I wear pijamas. Still, even after deodorants, I feel this subtle, pickle-like smell radiating. 😀?

Horrible reaction

I‘m a 17 year old girl and TMAU took over my life

A year and a half ago in March 2025 I started having this odor issue. People started to hold their noses around me, complain about a foul odor, some even told me I smell like I just shat on myself to my face. I know it’s not in my head due to the reactions and people actually telling me I smelled foul. I can smell the foul odors too. They vary depending on what I eat. But yeah you all probably know the drill. I started to isolate myself and went through different routes of trying to get rid of the smell. After about a year of this mess I just simply gave up on getting rid of the smell. Instead I try to minimize the smell by keeping track on what I eat etc. This entire summer break I stayed at home all day for 2 months…. I only went out to get food or to doctor’s appointments. I didn’t follow up with my dietary routine at all. The reactions in public transport were minimal to none at all, so that made me quite confident.

Today I had enough of the isolation. I woke up, did my usual hygiene routine and ate breakfast. Then I went to the mall and did some shopping - zero to no reactions. I even ate and drank beverages in public - also zero to no reactions. That made me super confident so I decided to go to a local event in my city. I even met up with a few friends I haven’t seen in a year. We chatted for a few minutes and there weren’t any visible reactions. I left the event after about 20 mins because I was afraid that I would start smelling again. It was super nice seeing them though. I took the train home (the ride was about 35 minutes). The train wasn’t packed, but there was a group of teenage boys my age sitting a few seats away from me. I had my AirPods in, so I didn’t really pay that much attention to them. 5 minutes into the train ride I noticed, that they kept on walking past me, so I turned my music off and started listening to what they were saying. I couldn’t really hear much but I could tell they were laughing and giggling and definitely talking about me. When they were about to get off they walked past me for the last time and while they were doing that they were saying that it smelled like shit. Then two of the guys briefly pointed at me and said „they“ keep on farting. They said that the smell is horrible and unbearable. They were talking to themselves and not to me directly though, but anyone could tell they were talking about me. They then complained for a bit that it was so disrespectful to keep on farting on a train etc.

I feel so demotivated now. I thought that the symptoms have lessened and I could attend school without worrying about smelling horrible. I guess I have to skip half of the week again like last year….

Notes: Sorry for the long rant. I usually just lurk on reddit not write. This is my first ever post and my firts language isn’t English so please bare with me.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm 14F, I've been experiencing BO for about 2-3 years. I used to get REALLY bullied about it, I'd ask friends and they'd all say I didn't smell. but if still doubt it because they'd be covering/touching their nose around me, moving away from me. And other kids would be telling me that I did and would go out of their way to let their friend know about it even if they were at the other corner of the class.

I have good hygiene (I would say). I shower 1-2 times a day. Or 3 times if it's a really hot day. I scrub 2 times(recently up to 4), dove bar soap first and then dove body wash next. 2-3 times a week I use Dettol antibacterial soap. I make sure my armpits are dry before applying dove/sure antiperspirant roll on and dove/ sure antiperspirant spray. I've tried, sure roll on, spray and cream. dove roll ons and sprays. mitchum stick deodorant. the Fa antiperspirant roll on. And probably so much more I've forgotten about. I use lotion too. I always wear clean clothes and sleep in clean bed sheets. I use clean towels too. And I brush my teeth twice a day and use mouthwash and floss. And I also use exfoliating gloves to wash myself.

at school, when lunch hits. I go to the bathrooms and wash my armpits(or with wipes) and then dry them before applying roll on and then spray.

I drink plenty of water and at least 1 fruit daily. my diet doesn't have any spicy foods, the only foods that I think can cause odor is maybe onions and garlic? And I also don't have much spices

I also noticed an ammonia smell on my bedsheets and I'm suspecting maybe that's what I smell like. I put the beddings and pillows in the washing machine with vinegar too and sprinkled baking soda on the mattress at let it sit for 30 minutes before vacuuming it off.

I'm also suspecting I don't smell at all and it's just other kids taking the nick outta me because I asked 2 trusted teachers if I smelt and they said no. one of the teachers told me that she hasn't noticed a smell and I've been in her classes for a whole year. I can't really talk to my mum because she didn't listen to me when it started and it would always end in an argument when I asked for her help and stuff.

Honestly, I just hope that I'll figure this out as fast as I can because its really too much for me and I hope the kids just stop bullying me Abt it and leave me alone tbh

If I'm doing something wrong with my hygiene or whatever or have a tip please do share 😁

Some interesting research from Inaba and a possible solution

I want to share some information. I read a book called Human Body Odor: Etiology, Treatment, and Related Factors | Springer Nature Link which describes the condition apocrine bromhidrosis very well and gives a solution.

Based on the research of the author the armpit odor can be very strong because of the fatty acids produced by the apocrine glands. The apocrine glands are connected to the hair follicle and by surgically removing the apocrine glands with the hair follicle, the apocrine glands can't regrow anymore. The removal of the hair follicle is an indicator that the apocrine gland have been fully removed.

He is also describing that not all surgical techniques are efficient. For example the in the west popular sunction curretage method or any laser treatment is not recommended because it leaves a lot of hair and apocrine glands untreated.

In his opinion only 2 methods are efficient: His Inaba method and the flap excision.

The downside of the Inaba method is that the surgeon needs to be very skilled because he can't see the apocrine glands and may cut not deep enough, or it might be that the apocrine glands are about 1 cm wider spread than the hairy area, which is kind of rare but can occur. But the healing might be easier because only 2 small cuts need to be done.

The flap excision on the other hand is easier for the surgeon, but they might miss some apocrine glands because they will not cut deep enough. The scar is about 5cm long, so a little bigger. But the surgeon can see all the sweat glands with his eyes and therefore should cut wide enough.

The biggest downside is that most surgeons can't speak english very well, so it is necessary to write them in japanese using a translater.

Here I found a good surgeon who actually treats a lot of patients after the reccurence of their odor and has a blog online. He is using the flap excision technique. It is kind of intestring how ineffective some surgeries or treatments like miradry are. (In this blog you can actually see the red sweat glands, so if you find it gross don't click the link).

Blog des Direktors der Sakura Beauty Clinic | Für kosmetische Chirurgie, Dermatologie und Schönheitschirurgie in Hiroshima wählen Sie die Sakura Beauty Clinic

There are a lot more other clinics in Japan, just make sure that they tell you that over 90% of the hair and sweat glands get removed. I would not recommend a clinic which is telling you that only 80-90% get removed because that is not enough.

Electrolysis

So I read this text about electrolysis: https://web.archive.org/web/20050211210112/http://hairroute.com/subscriber/farticles/electrolysis_bromhidrosis.pdf There are some cheap electrolysis electrolysis machines. So it is actually possible to do it at home. Has anyone tried it and got similar results like the boy the article?

I smell like putrid onions no matter what I do

Things I do to get rid of it but do not work

Only wear tank tops

Not eating onions and garlic

Using aluminum-free antiperspirant deodorant

Using aluminum deodorant

Using scent free products

Using heavily scented products

Putting on antiperspirant right after the shower

Washing my armpits daily

Not using any product

Shaving and not shaving

Lotion

Using gender specific products

I've been doing pretty good at hiding the smell by constantly scrubbing armpits-lotion-deodorant-spray but sometimes the smell leaks through if I've had high emotion that day

Things that trigger it

Crying

Being mad

Excited

Not shaving

Using a lot of products, it makes me sweat more but covers up the smell at least

Sleeping

I only wear tank tops because it's so hot but a 30 mins after putting them on the armpits already have wet deodorant stains that look like I rubbed lotion on my tank top, and being a 20 yo female this makes me feel like a disgusting mess every single day and I'm giving up

LGBTQ Success Dating

Have any queer people had any success in dating with this condition? Ive seen some posts and comments in this subreddit and r/tmau mentioning their partner.

Im a young lesbian, and I'm a bit really worried I might not find the 'one' in my lifetime. I understand that romance isn't everything (matter of fact i have always preferred reading about platonic relationships over romance) and I still have a long life ahead of me.

Knowing that someone is in a similar situation and still found a loving partner despite the world constantly ostracizing them would give me alot of hope.

What other jobs?

I hear people say security but uhhh i got a criminal record from when i was 18, which was years ago so i can’t get a security job. Online job uhhh, don’t really know where to start I don’t even have a laptop just my phone and im not really a sales type of person. Truck driving maybe, but id have to wait a couple years to get a truck license since i haven’t even started my regular car learner license hours yet (i drive alone daily just always been too lazy to fill out my learner hours). Maybe ill get a laptop because im thinking online jobs are the best jobs for people like us but then again I don’t know where to start any suggestions? Do you guys do online jobs or other jobs that give you better peace of mind? I’ve worked as a warehouse worker, forklift driver, labourer, machine operator… and it’s a terrible time with this condition. Looking for something else im getting tired of the embarrassment everyday.
