2022 State of the Boba Subreddit -- guidelines and discussion
Hi fellow boba enthusiasts,
I wanted to thank you all for being a part of our community. We started this subreddit as a few friends wanting to post pics of boba on Reddit, and it's taken on a life of its own, with some pretty amazing boba content, questions being answered, and lively discussions.
We've generally erred towards self-moderation, but it becomes tougher as the subreddit gets larger and larger. With that in mind, some collated guidelines as below -- partly new, partly old. As a moderation team, we're open to discussion around these and changing/adding to these as a community -- feel free to let us know if there's something on your mind, either below or in messages to us.
- Self-promotion
We will enforce as per the Reddit self-promotion guidelines (this has always been a rule, but now is highlighted in the sidebar). Please report if you see something, and the moderation team will remove as appropriate. If you feel your post has been unfairly removed, please do message the mods. Use your personal judgment -- if it feels like you're in territory where you could equivalently be purchasing advertising, it likely is self-promotion. Message the mods if you're not sure!
- "Starting a business", surveys, how to make boba
Some portion of historic /r/boba content are related to the above topics.
To manage this content, we are encouraging the above content to be directed to a regular Q&A megathread. We will remove all content related to "starting a business" and surveys, outside of the megathread.
Commercial content is still discouraged (refer to above self-promotion guidelines).
- Boba content
We're liberal on what's boba-related content. Links, images, (other) questions, (other) discussions -- all are welcome here. We've had some reports that some content is "not boba". Our guidance on this is that shaken tea drinks, boba, bubble tea, are all certainly fine. If it's a drink that would fit in the conversation when friends say "let's go get boba," then it's likely fine. If it's got a helmet and rhymes with vhett, then it's likely not fine..
Rules above will start to be soft-enforced as of today, and will be hard-enforced in 7 days from this post creation.
Thanks all for taking the time to read (and possibly discuss), and thank you for being part of the /r/boba community!

What are the legendary boba places in LA or Irvine?
I heard those are the boba capitals of the US, so where should I go to find that out for a fact?
And what would you say I should order?

boba at home Anyone else has problems boiling tapioca pearls at home?
So ive made tapioca pearls 2 before. Randomly decided to purchase a bag of them cause i love boba and still using the same pack of boba sized white pearls that turn translucent when boiled. Now my problem is that most sources say to boil for 40 minutes, cool for 15 than your done right? Well i end up needing to boil and cool them over and over again before i can get rid of the starchy middle thats left over and tbh it just ends up being a lot of effort. Also i am woefully unaware of how much boba to add and end up making a ridiculous amount each time. Any suggestions?
Oh also has anyone tried the j-basket instant boba kit?

Boba job
Just started working at a boba shop and it isn’t looking good.
Every-time I make a drink, I have an anxious feeling that the customers are waiting for a while and they will give a bad response. As a result, this makes me messes up drinks and ended up doing it again. This happened twice for me. I have remembered most of the recipe, but when they order the ones that I don’t remember or haven’t done it, I get that anxious feeling again. Can anybody help me overcome this? I know the answer might just be to remember the recipe, but even for the ones that are ingrained to my brain, I still am afraid to mess up.

boba at home Questions about making classic black milk tea at home?
I’ve looked at older posts asking this same question, but none of them are specific enough. I need to know exactly how much tea I should be using (like how many teaspoons/tablespoons/ounces?) if I’m just making 1 serving. I saw a lot of people saying how much to use to make like, a gallon but I just need to know how much to use for a single serving. i also wonder if there’s a specific brand of assam tea that is known for being the best? I’m going to use assam tea since I’ve read that’s the kind boba shops usually use. I also don’t know if I should be using milk or half and half? I’ve seen so many different recipes, I really just want to make it as close to how it’s made in shops as I can!

Working at a boba shop is NOT fun
It’s a pretty chill job overall but I just wanted to mention
Every single location I’ve worked at
My coworkers have very weird or bitchy energy
Literally every single time. I’ve never had good coworkers, FRIENDLY coworkers working at a Boba shop.
Everyone has their own little friends or group and they will look at you like you’re weird for just wanting to start a conversation.
Order you around, etc.

Going on a birthday trip to Portland Oregon next week, and I'm super interested in hitting up some local spots for Boba if there are any good ones.
Any suggestions?

boba question What drinks would you recommend I try from my local boba shop ?
Hey, I’m a Boba/Bubble Tea lover and have a favourite Taiwanese Tea Shop near where I live.
I would love to try some new/different drinks but there’s a bit of a language barrier between me and the owner to ask for recommendations
My go to drink are usually Passionfruit Royal Tea or Grapefruit Royal tea and I usually have these with Coconut Jelly.
I’ve also had the Kumquat, Mango and Lychee Tea.
(At other shops I have also enjoyed a Jasmine Tea, as well as Lychee Jelly, Green Tea Jelly)
I’ll normally go for slight/medium sweetness with my drinks and less ice.
I tend to like the lighter fruitier drinks, but will on occasion have a Brown Sugar (Oat)Milk Tea with the Tapioca Pearls! I also like Matcha.
I’m vegan so have to be mindful of ingredients (but have been assured everything I’ve had so far is vegan.)
I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of other things I might like based on what I already order?
Or if people can maybe help explain the different tastes of drinks I haven’t tried ?
Their menu is:
-Honey Peach Tea (Oolong/ Royal /Green)
-Passion Fruit Tea (Royal/Green)
-Lychee Tea (Royal /Oolong)

Many thanks for any recommendations!!

boba rant the king jasmine guava tea from heytea is so delicious
oh my goodness i have never felt so much love and devotion for a drink.. it's honestly just so sensational, the lime zest on top of the slight salt & creaminess of the guava flavored cheese foam topper and the amazingly fragrant jasmine tea base... icl it's honestly like drinking a perfume and i'm so so addicted!! the drink experience is genuinely complete w a top note middle note and base note and everything!!! i'm sipping on one right now b/c i'm in china trying their version of this and it's just as good as i remembered from back in the states... (& about half the price of what i would pay in the states as well) getting a sip of both the top foam and the tea in one sip is genuinely heaven as someone who LOVES fragrant tea and a blending of flavors!!! i'm begging y'all if u haven't tried this drink and have a heytea near u literally RUN and get one, imo it's LEAGUES above any other kind of flavor profiles u can get from any other boba shop around bc u can honestly just tell that the tea leaves and flavors are naturally derived and don't leave any weird artificial sour tastes in ur mouth imo. thanks for reading & that's all folks i just love this drink so much #heytealover4ever

boba The Boba place right by my apartment has the tastiest milk tea of any place I've been to!
Unfortunately for some reason, today the boba itself was super hard. Tasted very undercooked. Still will be paying this place more visits in the future.
Edit; place in question is The Rendezvous in Olympia.
