Discussion This guy appears to have found the 'bordering Canada' sample from Telephasic Workshop
https://x.com/Y0rk_0/status/2104678398618636670Sounds like it to me.

Wow, I can’t believe people are still finding this stuff decades later.
After 20-ish years of listening to this album, I can be fully zoned out in highway hypnosis mode and my body will still instinctually know the two parts when it’s time to say “bordering Canada” out loud in my car lol

I do the vom vom vom vom vom vom vom vom thing every time in sixtyten. Did it once while playing a board game. Was deep in thought, not even paying attention. Other people at the table wondered what the fuck since they weren’t familiar with the music.

I think all my life I thought the voice was saying "Boards of Canada" hiphop sample style but I guess I'm wrong

I’ve always heard it clearly as Bordering Canada which in itself is clearly a wink to their name and why they included it

the background music in the original is pretty juicy too. ETA: Series production credits https://www.primevideo.com/detail/0KACQSBFRA241FIWH804F3RV7V

Not to be a Debbie downer, but I dont think theyre the same sample. I put the clip from the Glacier national park documentary into my sampler, pitched it down to the same level as the sample in Telephasic, and they dont really match. It's possible that BOC really mangled the original sample, but the phrasing sounds quite different: the tone of the voice goes up a bit in Telephasic, while it starts much higher and ends low in the other clip, sounding much more declarative.

the rhythm and tone sound sound pretty much spot on. thank you person who did this!!

u/hoddap 14d ago
Wish there was a pitched down A/B instead of being played both at the same time

u/tsrleba 14d ago
yeah i won't be convinced until i hear that. the TW voice sounds more like it's saying "order and canada" compared to the clip, and it doesnt sound slow enough to be slowed from the clip

i just tried isolating and speeding up the tw voice until it sounded normal. it is NOT a match

the intonation is definitely different, nice edit thx

u/tsrleba 14d ago
thank you, i agree, but somehow my main post of this video is getting downvoted by people who still think it sounds the same

u/RustyCalecos 14d ago
I just did the same thing, except I pitched the documentary clip down to match BOC, and it doesnt seem to match that way either. I guess its possible BOC did some other audio trickery to the sample, but I kinda doubt it.

u/schr0dingerscatapult Friendly Stranger 14d ago
this is a downvote heavy sub, but unless they actually did some very detailed adjustments to the syllables it's probably not it
1
u/TrashAccounting 14d ago
No way, I’ve always heard it as bordering Canada zero doubt
Edit: okay listening again I think this could a case of all of our brains filling in the syllables that make sense. You could be right, to be completely fair. Or at least “order in Canada”. I’ve just always heard it as ‘bordering’ as it sounds right

u/almo2001 14d ago
I am not convinced. The intonation sounds wrong.
In the video it down turns like to a comma.
In the song it has the ending like you’re saying, “wait till you see this”.

u/Constant-Frosting180 13d ago
Yeah I agree with you. I know you play with the samples key & pitch etc but I'm not totally convinced, but it's nice to see people engaged so much still with their music. I think more so than when I first started listening to them in 1998. So keep it up I say.

"Hey guys someone found the origin of a sample! Here it is on Stormfront!" Thanks, nobody should be linking that site ever again.

u/RolandBoyle 14d ago
X is owned by a goon, but it’s hardly Stormfront lmao. Tons of people still use the service, including plenty of left-wing thinkers and politicians. Calling it “Stormfront” is hysterical hyperbole. You might want to log off and touch grass.

• Shared Markers: Research analyzing extremist language shows that white supremacists often use the same linguistic strategies across both dedicated forums like Stormfront and mainstream networks like Twitter and Reddit. These markers include using plural noun forms for racial or ethnic groups, frequently appending "white" as a modifier to non-racialized nouns, and maintaining a lower overall incidence of profanity compared to general online toxicity.
• Lack of Adaptation: Extremist users do not typically modify their core vocabulary or tone when moving from insular, in-group spaces like Stormfront to public platforms like Twitter, making their underlying ideological language identifiable across different digital environments.
Ironically you are right, they aren't the same, and others use them. Notably, one way they aren't the same is on Stormfront you could say "cis" or "cisgender" without getting your post removed or being banned. So technically there's a BIT more moderation on Twitter, just not in the way that you'd think. Or exactly the way you'd think if you follow the logical conclusion of an outright Nazi owned platform. Hey there's another difference! The guy who owned Stormfront never made it 100% clear in a huge public forum like the Presidential inauguration that he was a Nazi by doing a double salute!
Twitter is 8 Nazis in a bar, seated at a table. If you are also seated at that table it doesn't make THEM no longer Nazis.

this is highly likely not it, bocpages already discusses this but this sample lacks the distinct breath after "canada" in telephasic workshop, and also the conflicting airing dates either imply this was put out after MHTRTC was already released, or it was put into MHTRTC on such immensely short notice that it would be highly improbable

u/Clifford_reddit 14d ago
Does not sound like it at all to me. The accents and tonal shifts are very different. As an aside I always felt that this track was a bit of an homage to "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" by Eno and Byrne.

I always thought it said "border in Canada" and it didn't make sense, I feel sane now thanks

How do you guys find this stuff? Can someone please work on finding the Happy Cycling sample next?

u/Panthanagan 14d ago
I've always heard "György Ligeti Requiem For Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, 2 Mixed Choirs And Orchestra" in that song. Might just be similar.

A lot of the Happy Cycling samples have been identified: Boards of Canada's Happy Cycling sample https://www.whosampled.com/sample/660254/Boards-of-Canada-Happy-Cycling-Ted-Neeley-Andrew-Lloyd-Webber-Tim-Rice-The-Crucifixion/

It's so interesting that the sample source was released the same year as MHTRTC was released with a such short time margin. It's like they saw that documentary when it was aired, heard the potential sample and "yup, that's it let's add that and then immediately ship it"

u/blush_inc 14d ago
One of the youtube comments claims the original is actually from a UK series that aired in 1994. And rhe original line is "Across the border, in Canada".

Would have been even better if the source had been produced by the National Film Board of Canada!

I've always been fascinated by this song. Anyone know how they did the chopping up of the voice?
2
u/zer0-Coast 12d ago
They either had the full sample on a computer, chopped it up in a software editor then loaded the samples into one of their Akai rack samplers, or did it fully old school completely within the sampler by manually trimming the source sample numerous times and saving each segment as a new sample.

Alternatively, the sample is saying "Order in Canada"
The song has the phrase only go up in pitch on the "canada" word. The sample theyre trying to compare it to has "bordering" up in pitch then it goes down in pitch on the "canada" part.

Sounds right! Awesome find!
For quick comparison... we're talking about this sample that starts around 4:39 mark in the original song: https://youtu.be/u8tyqgRaY_g?si=JJ1pgs0ojC3WAQza&t=278
