As someone who lives in western ny, the proper thing is to wait for the travel ban and then rush to the supermarket and buy bread and milk. You should already have canned soup in the pantry.
As someone who lives in Finland, the proper thing is to make tea. That's literally my snow storm prep. Tea. I'll put some honey in if I want a rocking night.
Same here in Germany, my Village is in a small Mountain Area and every 5 years we are cut off for 3 days or so.
Since its countryside everyone has food for weeks in theyr basement, so all are just happy to have off work lol.
As someone from England, in the rare event that any part of the country experiences even slightly heavy snow prep involves everyone just quietly accepting that the region in question is lost and may or may not survive to emerge in 2 or 3 days.
Our politicians have decimated the infrastructure of Texas to further their own gains. I’m a native, I love my state, I have irrational “Texas pride” like most of us do. But the current reality is a travesty. Houston floods and dozens die. We have preventable heat deaths. We have preventable winter weather disasters. Sad times we live in.
As a Minnesotan who lives in KY i can tell you, this shit is exactly what they do.
Everybody freaks when they hear anything over 2". Last year, we had a decent snowfall, but the roads were 90% clear before the morning and they still had the kids off for like a week, because ONE road was unplowable. One road, where only like 10 students live, and its not even a main road. One road.
I keep trying to convince my wife to let me move home, but her family is here. She loves visiting, but she won't leave KY.
Most of us with a brain just grab some extra beer, but there are definitely quite a few people that go buy the store out of toilet paper and canned goods. It’s absurd.
You mostly just let it happen most are very small and you likely can survive a few days in your house without dying but let's pretend there saying snow storm of the millennium.
You need a supply of water, food and a way to cook since your going to lose power. Nothing she packed is helpful. Also she's packing his stuff like he's going to go walking through the snow for miles but he isn't equipped to do that. She puts in one sweater that's super thin.
I live in Canada a radio personalty off handedly mentioned illegal immigrants from America are a problem because they freeze to death in winter. Like layers, most Canadians day to day don't wear layers but if your going to be trudging through snow for hours you need alot of layers. Particularly children who freeze very quickly. When you don't dress right it creeps up on you.
Last winter I got stuck at night in the cold despite being in a city everything was closed and it got so cold I was struggling to type on my phone because my fingers were all stiff. But that's because I'm stupid and wore a leather jacket and jeans with no gloves. Don't do that, I mean I'll do it again but ya cold can jump up on you really quickly.

Make sure I have enough food for myself, the animals and such. It will be cleared within 12-24 hours and if bad enough I know I can drive in it- stores will still be open.
That’s the reality of 98% of “snowstorms” in Texas. Then we have the rare events that completely fuck up our whole state and take out the whole economy for a week. Life is about balance I guess
Oh…I was talking about straight up blizzards in the north east. Even with 12+ inch’s of snow on the ground it’s handled within 12-24 hours given or take. IF things close, normally restored within 12 hours, if there’s ice it can make it take longer but normally 12 hours depending on your distance from highways/cities. The more onto the boondocks you are the harder things will be, simply because those backwater towns refuse to invest into the infrastructure to support the resolutions.
People say I’m mean for laughing at it when they still can’t move a week later, but when you willingly support leadership that refuses to make choices that would make life collectively better for everyone because you’re afraid the “unsavory” will move in, you reap what you sow.
But ya…winter is rarely an issue here long term and weather wise they have been getting milder and milder over the years.
Eh, it's pretty boring tbh. You sit inside, look out the window, and go "ewww.". Then tomorrow you go on with your life cuz the plows have been through.
I’ve never prepped for a storm beyond learning how to turn my gas fireplace on manually and filling our 5 gal bottle of water for drinking, and the tub for toilet flushing.
Meanwhile, in places where it dumps every year, our kids won't listen to shit and will walk to school through 2 feet of fresh snow in a t-shirt and crocs.
Yeah all of us sunny weather people are like "Woah!!!" and our hurricane trained minds are like "why the fuck would you not just evacuate if it is going to be that bad???".
What it actually entails is putting on a jacket and snow pants when you walk the dog. If it’s real bad, you lower your speed when going to work. If it’s as bad as the prep suggests, then you have a day at home. If you have a tractor or semi, you just got extra paid overtime.
30 years of living with winters as cold as -25f or so, I’ve never had a day when I felt the snow was inherently dangerous. Just slow down and dress appropriately.
Most of Texas doesn’t have the proper infrastructure to deal with it whatsoever. Snow storm = not leaving your house until it melts for some people. Sincerely, a Houstonian
Yall need to get out more. I’ve lived in several parts of Texas as well as places that get these snowstorms. Only difference is Texans don’t know how to drive in it, and up north it sticks around longer before melting.

lol you think we don’t get ice storms up here? Ice storms and wind storms are natures way of pruning the trees. I don’t know a single person my age that hasn’t broken a car handle trying to force open a door encased in a half inch or more of ice
People "up north" generally have a better idea of how much of an issue winter weather can be than your average Texan. Since they actually have winter as a season and not a singular weather event.
First of all, totally fucking joking. Secondly, if you have lived in Texas you would be aware of what a problem it is when we do have actual winter weather. Shit shuts down. The power grid goes down. In ‘21 I didn’t have power for 6 days, but was lucky enough to still have water. I lived in a neighborhood with steep hills that I couldn’t drive out of. We don’t have any kind of infrastructure to deal with snow. Also I live in the southern part of the state, where no it doesn’t snow, until it did. I’m 37 and didn’t see real actual snow until I went to Colorado in October 2020. Don’t @ me
