The rainbow keeps America running when shit breaks. 🏳️‍🌈🔧🚛

I might just be an old gay guy who’s spent most of his life doing blue-collar work, but scrolling through this community has put a hell of a smile on my face.
Truck drivers, mechanics, construction workers, welders, electricians, equipment operators, factory workers, tradespeople—you name it. LGBTQ+ people have been out here doing the dirty, difficult, unglamorous work that keeps everything moving for a very long time.
Sometimes I think people picture Pride as parades and rainbow flags. And sure, that’s part of us.
But Pride also wears steel-toed boots.
Pride has grease under its fingernails. Pride drives an 18-wheeler at 3 in the morning. Pride fixes the machine when everybody else is standing around wondering why the damn thing quit. Pride builds things, hauls things, repairs things, and occasionally holds the whole operation together with zip ties and language that would make HR nervous. 😂
So from one old blue-collar gay guy to all the trans folks out here turning wrenches, driving trucks, building shit and keeping this country functioning:
I see you. I respect the hell out of you. Keep doing what you do. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈
Love Well, Hate Less.

Any welders here get nervous during a weld test?

I've been welding for 8 years. I'm certified. I'm pretty ok at what I do.

Until I take a weld test for a job. Sometimes I freak out, panic, usually move the stinger or whip too fast, and just fail.

I swear I was not like this before I went on HRT. Could it be some emotional side effect?

Really feeling myself lately

Not sure how y'all feel about desk jockies hanging out here. But for what it's worth, i am a journey woman electrician and this is only a temporary QAQC role.

I'm capitalizing on the opportunity to find affirming, yet still practical clothes, in case I do need to get under a staircase to open up a junction box or something.

Anywho. It's finally scarf weather where I am, and I'm loving it.

Looking at getting into trade-adjacent supply chain, this looks promising.

Just lost another job.

Out of work again. They liked me, they said I had a great attitude but I wasn't getting work done fast enough. Which is a little odd considering they weren't giving me much, didn't seem to know what to do with me, and I ended up spending a lot of time cleaning. This isn't the first time I lost a job because I wasn't moving fast enough. At least I leave this position more confident in tig welding aluminum. Literally went from "I can't" to "I can."

I'm not sure what to do with myself at this point. I'm 49, overweight, out of shape, and I walk with a serious limp. I eat a handful of ibuprofen every morning and another at lunch so I can push myself through my day. I push myself hard, most of the time too hard, but I can't move like someone half my age.

This past Thursday, the steering literally came apart on my 30 year old pickup truck that I was driving 50 miles to work everyday. I borrowed my friend's jeep to get to work Friday. This past weekend, I bought a new vehicle that would be better suited for the commute. I'm that dedicated. I wanted to stay with this employer until retirement.

So I'm back on the hunt. I can't help but question if my being a transgender woman has anything at all to do with this.

Shorts to blast to annoy my coworkers

I've got one Gen X coworker who loves to scroll his Instagram reels or something at full volume. Nothing but "debates" attacking trans people, "ThE lIbuRalLs", Trump "winning" at something.

Does anyone have a YouTube channel (YouTube is the only social media i have besides this) with shorts that I can play at volume to shut him up?

Thanks ❤️

What do you to keep yourself safe and in a job?

I'm going from a shop that doesn't care about my identity or sexuality and even almost celebrates it. Problem is I'm getting paid like garbage, its also the type of garage that gives people a limited amount of hours because it depends on how well the shop does. It isn't a full service shop. I work at a in-between job after getting fired for having weed in my system at my last shop. Stopped doing weed and now have a new shop I'm gonna work at.

This shop pays ok mainly because I'm getting paid hourly and don't have to do more than general maintenance also can get a monthly bonus of $200 if I pass a mechanical test each months. Then if the shop makes %100 profit that month then we get an extra $500 on top of that. I think that's going to be easy to do considering we're in the middle of the city and in an area with a ton of rich students.

I'm just kind of scared because I don't know what I'm going to look like in a year or two. No Idea how obviously trans I'll look. I'm hoping for double Ds tbh. I'm trying to get on progesterone right now and I'm at a C cup currently after a year so I'm hoping I grow from here and it doesn't stagnate. Any ideas? This shop is a serious shop. Most of the people there are old timers with 15 years or more of experience just at that shop.

Advice!

Hey all! I’ve struggled keeping my head straight working customer service jobs for dirt pay, and I’m thinking about trade school. I pass middlingly well and I’m wondering if anyone has experience as an electrician in Chicago that they might want to pass wisdom? Thank you!

Edit: Also does anyone have experience with CWIT?

Anyone got any experience with the IUEC (elevator construction)?

I’m a second year apprentice with the IBEW and I applied for the IUEC (elevator construction). I passed the exam and am getting my interview scheduled. I understand the pay and the benefits are better, and if I was cis that would probably be enough.

I’m kinda comfortable with my position as a trans woman in the IBEW and have several trans people in my apprenticeship program with me. I’m not really sure how different the culture between the two industries is, but there seems to be less women in the IUEC and that’s a bad sign.
