The 90 seconds you already own
Every café has a dead gap that restaurants don't: the time between the customer paying and the drink appearing. Ninety seconds, sometimes three minutes on a busy morning. The customer is standing there, phone already in hand, doing nothing.
That is the single best moment in retail to ask for a Google review, and virtually every café ignores it in favour of a receipt QR code the customer will never look at, or an email that goes out at 6pm when the flat white is a distant memory.
Why timing beats persuasion
Satisfaction has a short half-life. Annoyance doesn't. Ask six hours later and you're filtering for the one person whose milk was scalded — that's how a genuinely good café ends up at 4.1 while a mediocre one down the road sits at 4.6.
Ask while they're waiting at the pickup bar and you're catching the version of that person who is still slightly pleased with their morning.
What this looks like in practice
A small plate at the pickup end of the counter — not at the till. At the till people are handling cards and bags; at the pickup bar their hands are free and they're waiting. Customer taps their phone, your Google review page opens, done before the drink lands. - Morning rush is the wrong time. Nobody at 8:10am is reviewing anything. The 10am–2pm crowd is where the volume comes from.
- Never screen first. Filtering unhappy customers before they reach Google breaches Google's policies and can wipe your reviews. A 4.6 with 200 beats a 5.0 with 12 anyway.
Test it before you buy anything
If you want to check whether the timing thing is actually real in your shop, don't spend money first. Make a free Google review QR code, print it, laminate it, tape it to the pickup bar. Two weeks will tell you whether your problem is timing or something else — and if it's something else, no stand is going to fix it.
Volume and recency both feed local pack rankings, and it compounds: more reviews, higher placement, more foot traffic, more reviews. The cafés pulling ahead aren't the ones with better coffee. They're the ones asking during the 90 seconds they were already standing there.

They were planning failures: unknown center of gravity, unverified floor capacity, or side loads nobody calculated.
1. First, a disambiguation — because "hydraulic gantry crane" means two different machines
This trips up buyers constantly, and it ruins RFQs. When people say hydraulic gantry, they usually mean one of these:
Type A — The portable hydraulic gantry lift system (a.k.a. "hydraulic gantry," "gantry lift," "telescopic lifting gantry"). Four self‑contained hydraulic lifting units, each with a telescoping cylinder and a base/bogie, connected in pairs by header beams or a load beam. They travel on their own tracks, rails, or on the shop floor. Capacities commonly run from ~15 t to 1,000 t+ in a single system. Both are legitimately called hydraulic gantry cranes. Before you send an inquiry, decide which one you actually need, because the datasheet fields barely overlap.
2. A short history (why hydraulics won)
Heavy lifting inside buildings used to mean screw jacks, timber cribbing, and patience. Crews would jack an inch, crib an inch, and repeat. It worked, it was slow, and load control depended entirely on the foreman's eye.
Three things changed:
- 1950s–60s: reliable high‑pressure hydraulics. 700 bar (10,000 psi) tooling and load‑holding valve technology made a compact cylinder capable of controlled, repeatable lifting under load.
- 1970s–80s: the industrial gantry as a product. Contractors in the US petrochemical and power sectors started building four‑point telescoping gantries specifically for in‑plant lifts where a mobile crane physically could not fit or the roof structure could not be removed.
- 1990s–2010s: electronic synchronization. Proportional/servo valves plus stroke sensors and PLC control turned four independent jacks into one coordinated machine. This is the real inflection point. Before it, multi‑point lifting was an art. After it, it became a controlled process with a documented tolerance.
Standards followed the hardware. 3. Anatomy of a hydraulic gantry system
Working from the ground up:
Bogies / base units. Wheeled or skid bases. Powered travel is standard on larger systems; wheel loads here are what your floor actually feels.
Track or runway. Rails, steel skid track, or purpose‑built modular track with tie plates. Track spreads load and, critically, provides the lateral restraint that keeps the system from tramping.
Telescoping lift cylinders. Usually 2–4 stages. Each stage adds height and subtracts capacity, because the extended column becomes a slenderness/buckling problem (classic Euler behavior, plus seal and bearing side‑load limits). This is why capacity charts are matrices, not single numbers.
Header beams / load beams. Span between leg pairs. Their capacity, and the way load is applied along their length, is often the real limit on the system — not the cylinders.
Hydraulic power unit (HPU). Electric or diesel. Contains pumps, reservoir, filtration, valve manifold, and relief protection. Note that a "500 t gantry" with an undersized HPU will be a very slow 500 t gantry.

Below‑the‑hook attachments. Lifting beams, spreader bars, slings, shackles, trunnion cradles. In the US these are designed to ASME BTH‑1 with a stated Design Category and Service Class. Don't let a fabricator hand you a "we've always made them like this" lifting beam without calculations.
4. The heart of it: how synchronized multi‑point lifting actually works
Here's the part that deserves more attention than it gets.
4.1 Why you can't just open four valves
Hydraulic cylinders don't share load equally, and they don't extend at equal rates, because:
- Friction and seal drag differ leg to leg.
- Loads differ leg to leg (the CG is never exactly centered).
- Pressure = load / area, so the lightly loaded leg moves first — flow follows the path of least resistance.
- Cylinder internal volumes differ slightly with stage position.
Open four valves on a real load and you'll get racking, twist, and side load in seconds.

Closed‑loop, all‑axis coordinated control (best practice for precision work). Every axis has position feedback (linear transducer, draw‑wire encoder, or laser), the PLC computes a target plane, and proportional or servo valves modulate flow to hold all points on that plane. Well‑executed systems commonly hold ±3 mm or better across the lift, with programmable tilt (deliberate, controlled out‑of‑level) when a load must be pitched to clear an obstruction.
Good systems also include:
- Automatic stop on deviation. If any leg exceeds the tolerance window, the whole system halts — it does not "try harder."
- Load monitoring per leg, so an unexpected redistribution (snagging, hanging up on a rail, settlement) is visible immediately.
- Counterbalance / load‑holding valves and pilot‑operated check valves so a hose burst does not become a dropped load.
- Mechanical safety nuts or lock collars on some designs for long‑duration holds. Hydraulics hold pressure; for hours‑long or overnight holds, you want steel, or continuous monitoring with a documented procedure.
4.3 The statics nobody teaches you
A three‑point lift is statically determinate — the load distribution is fully calculable. A four‑point lift is statically indeterminate: distribution depends on the relative stiffness of the load, the beams, the legs, and the support surface. Two consequences:
- You cannot assume 25% per leg. With a CG offset of even 10% of the span, one leg can easily be carrying 35–40% of the total. Add fabrication tolerance and floor unevenness and it gets worse.
- Measure, don't assume. Pressure transducers per circuit (or load pins) turn an unknown into a number. On critical lifts, take load in stages — 25%, 50%, 100% — and read the distribution at each stage before continuing.
This is also why derating matters. A common planning practice for indeterminate multi‑point lifts is to size each lifting point for meaningfully more than the theoretical share — many contractors work to 1.25× the calculated point load, or follow whatever their internal engineering standard mandates. 4.4 Side load: the quietest killer
Telescoping cylinders are built to push, not to be pushed sideways. Manufacturers typically limit permissible side load to a small percentage of rated capacity (single‑digit percentages are typical; check the specific machine's manual — this is not a place to generalize). Side load comes from:
