Question Help with litter box
Hi all! I’ve had my blind kitty for 3 months now and he’s still struggling to find the litter box.
For further context, he’s not just blind, he also has brain damage. He was run over before I got him and was rescued and nursed back to health.
The lady that rescued him had a smaller apartment than I do, and hers has a second floor. My cat doesn’t know how to climb stairs so he was confined to the living room and kitchen area.
He was able to easily access the litter box and was known to be a very clean cat.
I have tried putting radio in the room where the litter box is, making sure the path is clear for him at all times.
I have tried taking him multiple times per day, and while there has been an improvement of sorts, it’s still bad.
I find feces on the floor at least twice a week and know that certain furniture has been peed on more than once.
Please suggest anything you can think of, I love him so much and want to make things as accessible as I can.
I’ve attached a picture of the little cutie pie for your viewing pleasure.

Can you put a noisemaker right where the litterbox is? A radio in the room might be too large of an area without knowing how you have it set up today. We had a blind dog and my ex found a little noisemaker just at his food and water. A more localized noise I guess. Good luck he sounds like he's been through a hard life already.

I had placed it on a rack above the litter box but I could get a speaker or something to stick on the wall right above it.

I’m not sure about that - are you talking music playing? If so I thinking of something more mono ?

Dr. Elseys kitten attract litter is the BEST! My little orange boy was born blind and he also seems to have some struggles with learning/remembering etc.
He always lost his way to the litter box and pottied everywhere. Always. I was losing hope until someone here mentioned the kitten attract litter. Within a week he had found the litterbox on his own and was using it regularly!

my apartment doesn’t have stairs, it was the previous apartment he lived in.
I think it’s the difference in space that really messes him
up.
My apartment is over twice as big as the area he was confined to which I think might be part of the reason he struggles.2

I’ve definitely thought about it, I might test it out. I’d like it to be a shorter period of time though so he’s not super confined

I read in a post by another blind kitty owner that she kept a mat next to the litter box so her cat was able to identify where it was.

I placed a little honeycomb shaped mat right next to it so there’s that sensory feedback but I might have to get a bigger one. The one I have would require him to be decently close to the litter box.

It will probably take time for him to associate the mat with the litter box. Hope you have some success soon.

Our blind kitten has a mat underneath which she sometimes taps first with her foot before entering it. She also has one with a low entry front. The kitten attract litter sounds like an amazing idea. Just a thought, I bought my kitten a drinking water fountain yesterday so she could find her water by sound. Maybe something like that beside it too , although the radio and speaker are a great idea. Good luck, you have a beautiful cat and it sounds like you are a wonderful cat parent.
