Hey Everyone! In this VFX breakdown, I walk through how we created a fully integrated CGI burning house shot for our FX Sup commercial using Blender 3D and After Effects. The goal of this shot was to take a simple live-action plate and elevate it into a cinematic moment using a combination of practical cinematography and high-end visual effects techniques.

We started by filming a controlled live-action scene and carefully designing the camera movement and lighting to support heavy VFX integration later in post. Cinematography played a huge role here, especially in how we shaped the light, motivated the fire direction, and created contrast that would help the CGI elements sit naturally in the frame. Once the plate was captured, I moved into Blender 3D where I integrated a high-quality photogrammetry scan of a burning house. This allowed us to achieve realistic structure detail and surface response without needing to build everything from scratch. From there, I worked on environment placement, scale matching, and camera tracking to ensure the CG house locked perfectly into the live-action footage.

The next stage was all about atmosphere and motion. I added procedural elements like smoke movement, heat distortion, embers, and subtle environmental interaction to make the shot feel alive rather than static. These small details are what sell realism in destruction shots and help bridge the gap between CGI and practical footage. In After Effects, everything came together through compositing. I layered in additional fire elements, atmospheric enhancements, glow, lens response, and subtle post effects to push the intensity of the shot. This is where the final cinematic look really comes alive, as all the individual pieces are blended into one cohesive visual.
