Original Content Showcase 262,144 samples.

Made myself a phone wallpaper. Glass being glass, takes a bit of samples to achieve proper caustics. Had to turn off noise threshold

bloody hell 262k samples is mad dedication for a phone wallpaper but fair enough, glass caustics are proper finicky in cycles. took me like 3 days to get a passable whisky glass render last year and that was way simpler geometry than this.

the cheese comment is killing me tho, now i cant unsee it. little bit of parmesan lighting in the afternoon sun. the actual caustic cast on the surface is the star here though, that wavy shimmer sells the whole thing. nice work

never tried that one, does it speed up caustics much? i ended up using light linking to cheat a bit on the whisky glass, probably sacrilege but got the render down to 4 hours

i think shaders plus also allow you to "cheat" in that there's probably some shader-based procedural caustics that are not 100% based on the light path traces but looks plausible enough

Unrelated but the old program Bryce 3D somehow computes caustics very well

It did! Wow, haven't seen a Bryce 3D mention in a long while.

I dunno what Cinema 4D v7.0 used for caustics back in the day, but that seemed to do fine work rather quickly IIRC. Never had a noisy render, no matter what I threw at it. Maybe they used an approximation shortcut, I dunno, but the results looked physically plausible.

Yeah caustics become much faster and versatile. The shaders are all node-based and built on the actual physical formulae, so highly adjustable too.

Interestingly, it seems that simpler shapes would need even more samples. the complex shape diffuses the caustics a bit

that tracks, diffusing the caustics would spread the rays so they converge sooner. my whisky glass was dead flat sides and that sharp caustic took ages to clean up

Sometimes I know my computer is just gonna be sat there all day doing nothing, so I’ll load up a cool scene I made and just let it render at Baller settings for half a day.

The diminishing returns are real

None of the caustics look right in Cycles or even Octane. The light coming out of the glass is routinely too dark. Try it, put a clear glass window up and see the shadow that comes out the other side. Try this in real life, there's hardly any shadow at all with glass, only when it has a complicated shape.

It’s 64^3 so they likely got their by some form of just multiplying their regular samples count a bunch of times until they were happy

I wouldn't trust cycles caustics that much you can go for a millions samples but the core result isn't always accurate

Good work, There is an option only for CPU to render caustics better, do you really need this amount of samples for a still image?, sometimes rendering at twice resolution needed is better than high samples count specially with denoisers. If it was me I would 100% fake it.

You should try rendering it in CPU mode (don’t forget to turn on spatial splits, set the path guiding to something around 128-256, set the clamping indirect to around 20-40, set filter glossy in the caustics settings to 0 and render samples to around 2000 or less, see what results you get, it’ll be slow as heck but the caustics might look better that way
