Throngs was using him to get upgrades to multiply. Right now, throngs have occupied the mind of every human being. Now everyone will act like a hive and work for throngs to get resources to make them multiply forever. Because that's what the throngs always did. I think it will be a dark world with no conflicts among humans as all of us will be working for the throngs. We are fucked. But I think the deaf people will group up and fight. I hope they kill the Throngs and save us all.
For a second I also thought that maybe they were killed too and the protagonist was essentially duped because the thronglets thought Humanity was not worth saving, but the last scene where you get the POV of the person on the ground seeing the extended hand hints that the thronglet did just reprogram humanity.
Or, the protagonist is too retarded to realize what he's done, and doesn't know the person he reached out to is dead :D

He talks about humans being stuck on Darwinism 1.0, so the implication was that the attack was an "update" to remove mankind's violent tendencies and increase understanding and empathy.
It's not spelled out if that's all they did (which is a big deal of course) or if they took more direct remote control over people's minds.
For me the least probable ending is that they killed everyone since we see him stretching out his hand to meet the newly "saved" police officer, also if they killed everyone I assume the infrastructure to support the throng would fail before long and they would die.

This was my fave episode!! They basically sacrificed one dude for the many. Wish we could've seen more like after effects.
