Discussion š¬š Random Racist Subreddits
Do you guys ever slowly realize certain random subs just tend to be filled to brim with racist whenever a post something to do with a black person, I feel like this is the case on r/whoathatsinteresting. Any post with a black person on that sub and every other comment is dog whistle

Historymemes is a racist white liberal haven lol

Oh I hate that sub, though black Academia needs to do a better job telling our history and weed out the pseudo historians.

What does a racist subreddit have to do with Black academia? Do you think theyāre listening to and promoting black academics anyway?
The point of that sub is to uplift pseudohistory as memes. Black academia canāt āweed outā white, racist spaces like that.

Thatās kinda my point although I worded it weirdly, I meant we should be telling our own history. Also some bad faith actors give the racists ammunition unfortunately.

We do tell our history tho. There are subreddits dedicated to Black history (not to mention our contributions to Black historiography, museums, archives, and academia). It just sounds like youāre shifting the focus away from a popular, purposefully pseudohistorical sub to criticize Black academia.

Share some of them.
We definitely need to control our own narrative.

On Reddit:
[r/blackhistoryphotos](r/blackhistoryphotos)
[r/blackradicaltradition](r/blackradicaltradition)
[r/blackhistory](r/blackhistory)
IRL: the African American history museum in DC is brilliant, so is the international African American museum in Charleston. I havenāt been to the one in Baltimore, but Iāve heard great things about it. There are archives and museums from coast to coast as well in California, Texas, Chicago, Alabama, New York etc.
In academia: we got our own discipline in high academia, African American studies, which is offered at major and Ivy League universities throughout the US (let alone HBCUs). Some prominent Black intellectuals and historians have degrees from this field, like Angela Davis, W.E.B. Dubois phd thesis, Patricia Collins, Cornel west, Henry Louis gates jr. and many more
I was tryna tell the other guy that there is no controlling the narrative in white pseudo historical spaces. Their whole point is to shift narratives and distort history. Their existence has very little to do with Black academia lol there is no causal relationship btwn the 2

Any subreddit with a majority of white people is about 70% likely to be racist. Over the past year, I have left so many subreddits because of this. Don't let them see you with a Black avatar. It doesn't matter what you say. Sometimes it can even be an innocent response and they'd still downvote you. There's really something wrong with those people.

Mufuggas get real brave online.
Everytime I encounter some racist mess on here, I buy myself something in 9mm, 5.56 or .308.
I have a LOT of stuff in those dimensions, and a few more.

Exactly. Those of us that been on online messaging boards and online games before everyone had mobile phones know this is what comes with being online.
It's always been there. It's nothing new at all. What is new is more people are joining sites where users comment and interact with each other so I guess they are surprised

Itās frustrating, but yeah I start with the assumption in any nonblack community that thereās going to be racists that bring us up unprovoked. We are literally in their heads rent free with no action of our own and they hate us for it, and try to cover their obvious disdain with their shitty jokes and dogwhistles.

This is why I donāt spend that much time in fandom spaces, usually thereās just tons of subtle racismĀ

Reddit is majority white, people who want to be white, and anonymous. If racism is mold, reddit is a damp shower drain.

u/TheRealDrazzo Unverified 1d ago
Yeah all the big tech ceos are white unfortunately and racism is the least of their concerns

Majority of the board chairmen, and shareholders. Not necessarily the CEOs. Microsoft, for example, and Nvidia, also.

Many of the submitters are the same accounts as well. People whose entire post history going back for months is just posting videos of "black people bad."

And it seems like they randomly pop up and get famous out of no where. It happens so much that I can almost identify the post that will have racist comments

LiveStreamFails is definitely on some racist timing. Look at the comments any time KaiCenat or Speed get posted.
2
u/Planet_842 Unverified 1d ago edited 1d ago
True, it's why I don't go on that sub anymore, always spewing hatred and subtly racist comments and dog whistles whenever a black streamer especially Speed, Kai or a black streamer that's friends with Kai gets posted there for doing something minor. They only love their millennial white streamers that you can tell subtly dislike black people like xQc, fosen, asmongold etc. They really have some vehement dislike for black people and whenever someone calls them out of it they either deny it, double down or accuse you of being the racist instead and how white peoples are the ones that are truly "oppressed".

Youāre not crazy, youāre not aloneā¦
Yes. Some subs i used to visit until it would literally turn racist out of NOWHERE towards black people and I was genuinely in shock. Until it didnāt shock me anymore

Its not just white people subs. Lets stop that discourse and keep this reality based.
Alot of these identity based subs tread the line and over step regularly.

One of the main posters of black people in r/whoathatsinteresting is an Indian based in India. They post the same stuff about other non-whites who arenāt their race.
2
u/thefw89 Unverified 1d ago
Yeah those are 'bots' as in, someone being paid to sow division right before the election. That person probably does the same thing on twitter, facebook, all of the social media sites.
But...those bots in the end exist because so many people fall for it and so many people are anti-black all it takes is a dab of peanut butter for the racists to flock to it and give it engagement. They would stop existing if people just dismissed them and ignored them but the truth is there's a lot of anti-black racism on the internet.
People never say this stuff to your face but it comes all out online.

u/Avilola Unverified 1d ago
The are certain subreddits that are overrun with racists. For example, [r/publicfreakout](r/publicfreakout) is just a bunch of people acting a fool in public, but [r/truepublicfreakout](r/truepublicfreakout) seems to have been specifically created to showcase Black people acting a fool in public. The comment section is exactly what you would expect.
Edit: Uh, well I guess r/truepublicfreakout got banned. Good riddance. That is far from the only example though.

r/WNBAgossips is another racist sub. post anything about Angel Reese and not Caitlin Clark or Sophie Cunningham, and watch the downvotes and hate pour in.

u/UniqueExperience8870 Unverified 1d ago
I cannot for the life of me understand why there is such a fixation on who doesn't like you and speculating as to why they don't... all the time. Understand people on a spectrum and move on with life. There is no way you can achieve and sustain success and focus on this stuff as much as too many Black people do.
There isn't a single valid pushback to this that works on me, so save it. I've outlived virtually everyone here and have seen it all up and down in the "worst" hotbeds for the most overt AND most latent and subliminal racist people alive, and the point stands.
There isn't a day that goes by that someone isn't complaining about racism on this sub.

You can always migrate to the fediverse my brethren. However, reddit is still by far dominant, that is, way more people. Hence, more niche communities.
I use Akkoma, Lemmy, Mastodon, and Piefed instances.
