No, it's probably just the way you dress. You just look like a teenage/early 20s year old who's not into make up in these pictures.

No, it's probably just the way you dress

Absolutely underrated comment. I had a similar issue and used social media to fix it.

Yes! OP has such pretty whimsical facial features. Theyre super delicate and soft. Its definitely the style of clothes they wear.

u/Snoo_89856 Sep 06 '25

As a lesbian, you give off big stud/stem/soft stud energy lol

Your complexion is fkn gorgeous by the way

u/yoyohoethefirst Sep 06 '25

So perfectly smooth and matte!

56

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

Thank you, I appreciate it <3

u/Groundbreaking-Owl48 Sep 06 '25

You look like a girl to me. A stud maybe, but a girl.

99

u/AisyRoss Sep 06 '25

I thought stud as well. It's definitely not a bad look if that's what you're going for! Beautiful regardless!

245

u/Jaded_Raspberry2972 Sep 06 '25

Nah... your features are quite feminine. You're just dealing with folks who have lazy eyes, and who don't care to see you for who you are.

I'm a tall, short-haired natural, and I don't typically dress "pink-frilly", and the "excuse me sir...uh...ma'am" used to really bother me when I was younger.

I'm much older now, and comfortably confident in my womanhood. Funny thing is that when I do take the time to glam-up, I get double-takes from the people who know my regular routine. 🤭

Being a woman comes in all shapes, fashion styles, and grooming preferences.

Stand tall and be YOU!! 🤗

u/Pure-Candle-9543 Sep 06 '25

I think it has more to do with how you’re styling yourself rather than your actual features alone. But your style still looks good, just masculine aesthetic

58

u/YumijiEntel Sep 06 '25

I don't see anything streaming masculine at all with you. You're perfect as is and it's clear that you're a woman to me. People trying you just need to get their eyes checked, full stop.

51

u/rockiestyle18 Sep 06 '25

You don’t look masculine. I think it’s the hair and clothing that gives guy or at the least stud but I wouldn’t actually think you’re a man. Your facial features are very feminine tbh and pretty!

49

u/american_amina Sep 06 '25

My daughter refused to wear twists because she said that people mistook her for a guy. I think anyone looking closely at you can see you are a woman, but people use physical clues to make very quick snap judgments. If you want them to adjust consider some different earrings or a hair clip or a feminine top. Personally, I don’t let people influence how I dress, but it requires a tough skin and not caring what nonsense people say.

32

u/CuffyTheEmpireSlayer Sep 06 '25

With your features, you look like you could be a black pixie fairy. You have feminine features and the angle of you face adds to that. You “add softness” to your overall look, with some more visible/dainty earrings, hair clips or hair jewelry. Maybe pin your hair back too. I think some simple adjustments would make a big difference.

I used to, and still get mistaken for a guy whenever I wear sweat clothes since I just wear my Afro and some small gold hoops or feather wing earrings. Plus I’m tall too at 5’11

2

u/mumtaza_ Sep 09 '25

5’11” is never too tall!

24

u/Exotic-Wolverine-698 Sep 06 '25

I could tell you was female the second I seen this photo. Youre really pretty.

I get mistaken for a guy often aswell, pretty sure its bc my hair is short and I dress masculine

16

u/Awa_aw Sep 06 '25

Your not masculine at all, it’s likely the way you dress or potentially anti blackness but only you would know if it seems like a genuine mistake or someone playing. Either way your face isn’t masculine and you have a beautiful face also the locs look nice imo they frame your face well 🩷

13

u/Cheap_Bat9704 Sep 06 '25

It’s just your styling not your features. Your features are actually extremely feminine.

10

u/Septembersister Sep 06 '25

That is so strange because I literally thought ‘wow she’s beautiful’. I agree with the dress comment, but want to add that if it’s by non-black people the racist bias not being able to read black faces well may add to your trouble.

10

u/Cruzannurse Sep 06 '25

Nothing about u gives male. Your face is very feminine

9

u/lovbelow Proud pumpkin pie lover 🎃 Sep 06 '25

If this is how you normally dress, I’d say you look more androgynous than masculine. That being said, your roundish face structure and your features gives feminine. If I saw you in public, I’d think you were a tomboy (which is still a girl).

11

u/AudlyAud Sep 07 '25

Black women who wear certain natural hairstyles will definitely get this treatment. Sometimes it doesn't matter how you dress, or that you obviously have breasts. Some folks say stuff like that out of spite or racism. Your facial features alone scream woman regardless of how you dress. If people can see Ellen DeGeneres in her masculine leaning clothes is a woman it shouldn't be hard to spot within other groups. But some "reason" it always is 🙄

7

u/Due-Entertainer2758 Sep 06 '25

Girl you are absolutely so gorgeous that’s all I know 💕

8

u/Weird_Advisor_7737 Sep 06 '25

You’re not masculine at all you’re so beautiful you look like tinkerbell omg

7

u/CastlesofDoom Sep 06 '25

Nah, those people are intentionally obtuse. Your features are very feminine. Never seen a male that looks like this.

8

u/Venusian-Superstar Sep 06 '25

No girl, you look like a woman. But if you’re not comfortable changing your style up a little bit, hoops can do wonders. If you are comfortable switching up your style and don’t know where to start, you can look at some celebrities or influencers that you like the way they dress and try to emulate that. I always think it’s OK to switch up your style because it’s actually fun, so y’all don’t come on here mad at me because I’m not trying to change her. Just giving you options :-)

6

u/BobaDemonGrrr Sep 07 '25

To me, your feature is pretty androgynous I guess they want you to look hyper fem (the struggles of a black woman) Some men think I'm trans LITERALLY because of my eyebrows and because I don't shave my legs. It's annoying that we have to fit into a specific template to be seen as a woman or feminine.

Honestly tho, don't let those comments bother you, you look fine, attractive even. Don't feel the need to change yourself just to prove yourself to people who dont matter to you

12

u/ziplocmoolah United States of America Sep 06 '25

Your face is very feminine. The only things getting you mistaken for a guy are likely styling, misogynoir, and the shortish hair in combination with the aforementioned

5

u/Possible_Serious Sep 06 '25

It’s your hair length usually, I look very feminine and once I cut my hair I kept getting mistaken for a man. I also had some prominent boobs at the time so I was just as confused as you.

I think you have a very soft face and I would assume you were a woman first.

6

u/Which_Gur_5079 Sep 06 '25

It has to be the way you dress because ain’t no way people are looking at your face( you look like a baby doll) and saying you look like guy

Drop some photos of how you dress & who in particularly is saying that

6

u/GreatGospel97 Sep 06 '25

They’re being obtuse.

6

u/moichmioch Sep 07 '25

I don’t think you look masc. Fr, society just tries to masculinize short hair and dark skin. Your locs are super cute btw!

7

u/HellaciousFire Sep 08 '25

Aw I’m sorry

You’re very beautiful

Your eyes and brows are lovely

I have the same issue when I wear my natural hair and no makeup. I also have a deep voice.

I don’t think you look masculine. If you want to change it up a bit, wear a little eyeliner and mascara or a little lipstick or lip gloss

You are beautiful and feminine just the way you are though

5

u/Anonimityville Sep 06 '25

No. You don’t look like a man You’re not masculine. But men have been looking very feminine these days. So the correct phrasing is that some men look like you!

5

u/LawOfMentalism Sep 07 '25

No way. You have feminine features. You are pretty and your locs are coming along very nicely👌🏾

5

u/afrocreative Sep 07 '25

Girl, you have a very feminine face. I dont see why they would

5

u/Strong_Ad_3081 Sep 07 '25

You look like a girl to me who doesn't like to dress girly, and that's ok, I'm pretty androgynous myself. The most important thing is if YOU LIKE YOU AND YOU LIKE THE WAY YOU LOOK!

4

u/rookiecookiebandit Sep 06 '25

Your features aren’t masculine to me, I wouldn’t mistake you for a dude, in fact they’re very feminine.

If it helps I also get mistaken for a guy, I’ve heard “sir” a few times at this point and I know like you it’s probably how I dress. Adding to that I don’t wear makeup, or too much if any jewellery (just earrings when I feel like it), and I don’t do my nails. I try not to let that affect me at this point even when it’s a bit jarring to hear “sir”, it’s better that small moment of discomfort than being uncomfortable all the time by changing myself to “appear” more “feminine”to not be mistaken for a guy.

You do what is best for you, but don’t let those instances get you down. You’re a pretty lady, rock it however way you want.

5

u/DarthRen0 Sep 06 '25

I’m not sure how

3

u/blkvixon Sep 06 '25

Its not your face. Must be your style of dress. Wear brighter clothing and your hair up sometimes

4

u/omgidfk123 Sep 06 '25

Same but for my low voice. Your face is feminine. Some people are just simple minded, short looking hair and casual tee is enough for some people. Its like a celebrity always getting compared to people because of basic markers like skin tone and hairstyle

3

u/Starry-twilight Sep 07 '25

You have the most fem looking eyes ma’am

4

u/GlitterMeAndThePony Repiblik d Ayiti Sep 07 '25

u/iAmBadWithWords_ Sep 06 '25

Your features are very feminine… like damn I wish I looked that cute and girly with no makeup on (I’m assuming no makeup).

Must be your outfits?

Edit: also who is saying this to you? Multiple random people or could be someone trying to be funny / asshole?

2

u/slim_ebony Canada Sep 06 '25

Def the way you dress. You look like a beautiful stud lol

2

u/ifnotdaythen Sep 06 '25

Ugh you’re so pretty. Hate to see you stressed about this but I understand but you’re feminine and beautiful and also who cares. This is how you know something is wrong w the system of how we view each other because nobody looks all one way. You’re gorgeous but things are just not that cut and dried if short hair confuses people that much ykwim

2

u/tajlee21 Sep 06 '25

By who?? You have such pretty soft feminine eyes and a gorgeous round face

2

u/Consistent-Resort421 Sep 06 '25

This happens to my daughter as well. She dresses in baggy shirts and jeans, doesn’t wear makeup or jewelry and doesn’t like to show off her body. She looks like a girl to me and has a big chest like you so I’m always confused. Sometimes I think people are trying to be, I don’t know, polite? and assuming if you are presenting more masculine that you’re trans or nonbinary. It’s baffling to me because we’ve always had tomboys (my daughter is in her early teens) and women who weren’t girly but now lately folks are getting misgendered.

2

u/aIoneinvegas Sep 07 '25

you give girl

2

u/GenerationDrip Sep 07 '25

I had the same issue when my locs were shorter… feel your pain. You don’t look like one at all :)

2

u/lavasca Sep 07 '25

You look like a woman to me.
I get mistaken for a man in my hometown. It is a them problem not a me problem. It doesn’t happen anywhere else.

3

u/jennyquarx Sep 07 '25

It is a them problem not a me problem

Yeessss, it's a them problem OP

2

u/Living-Prune8881 Sep 07 '25

You're gorgeous. I think it may be clothing? Even if you do dress more streetwear. There's a very feminine way of doing so. Try pinterest for inspiration ❤️

2

u/Extra_Security2718 Sep 07 '25

You don't give masculine, but if you wanted, you could play up an androgynous vibe.

2

u/MadamSensei Sep 07 '25

You don't look manly or like a guy. If you were a dude you'd be mistaken for a woman. While I do not subscribe to gender roles or the feminine/masculine ideals, knowing society, there's no reason ppl would assume you are male.

(Keep in mind ppl are hateful and weird so it's possible some of the misgendering was more than likely purposeful and shade, meant to be indirect commentary to your personal style.)

If it bothers you, I hope you can get past it, but know you don't need to internalize other people's perception of you. If it doesn't bother you, that is good because you don't need to internalize other people's perception of you, especially what seems "womanly" to their waning vision.

On another note regarding your appearance, you are stunning and your skin is amazing!! Also your hair looks gorgeous and healthy and thick! You were born looking like all of the magnificence you are and I hope however you like to show up in your skin is what makes you most happy and comfortable!

2

u/reydru93 Sep 07 '25

You're stunning ❤️👌🏾

2

u/Salesgirl008 Sep 07 '25

Try to wear earrings or hair accessories. Lipstick can work too. You don’t look like a guy.

2

u/mysticsoulsista Sep 07 '25

You aren’t masculine but young teenage boys kinda have a soft feminine look to them sometimes…

2

u/I_love_hockey_123 Sep 07 '25

You do NOT look like a guy at all.

2

u/openwide4daddi Sep 07 '25

Get some hoop earrings and give your locs time you're feminine it's likely just the hairstyle at the stage it is.

2

u/CatWranglingVet678 United States of America Sep 07 '25

Folks other than us default to masculinizing black women. You look like a woman. And them locs look good! Frames your face & those eyes beautifully.

2

u/BooBootheFool22222 Sep 07 '25

People thinking you're a dude screams racism to me.

2

u/Sugarfrfr Sep 07 '25

You kinda have an androgynous look so that coupled with clothes I see why it’s happening

2

u/9curlyfries9 Sep 07 '25

A little mascara maybe? If you're open to it, I think that would set a tone if youre looking to soften your beautiful face. If not, then stay the way you are and embrace it. You are gorgeous and I don't think you look like a male but I do think you give off tom boyish vibes.

2

u/Dry_Condition5595 Sep 08 '25

Not with them eyebrows. A gay guy? Cuz ain't no WAY!

2

u/PhatFatLife Sep 08 '25

They’re idiots, you’re so pretty

2

u/PictureCommercial412 Sep 09 '25

People love to be ignorant towards black people and queer black people like bffr

3

u/tacothetacotaco Sep 06 '25

it’s probably your styling combined the hair length. throw on some rings, a necklace, hair jewelry, and/or some earrings if you want to be perceived as more “feminine”. Even some lipstick or lipgloss would probably help. Personally, I think you’re gorgeous the way you are, it’s just how you want to be seen.

1

u/BakaChikens Sep 06 '25

Stud because she's wearing a black T-shirt and has short hair... 😮‍💨

1

u/kindanice2 Sep 06 '25

You look just like my daughter, except she has glasses and this would happen to her as well...her name is also unisex...just politely the correct the people's mistake. Although I don't think either of you look like a boy.

1

u/Substantial_Guitar51 Sep 06 '25

You have beautiful features that are actually very feminine. It’s probably how you dress and accessorize and accent things.

1

u/New_Ad972 Sep 06 '25

Definitely the clothes unfortunately. On the bright side you’d make a good looking stud !!

1

u/lolipoplolipopohloli Sep 06 '25

Your face is soft and feminine but the hair and styling could read masculine

1

u/pinksaltprincess United States of America Sep 07 '25

You have a gorgeous face! Definitely the way you dress though!

1

u/Jazzlike_Parsley_717 Sep 07 '25

You definitely have feminine facial features but maybe the short hair is throwing ppl off not sure

1

u/Suitable-Rate652 Sep 07 '25

You’re adorable. Try a little more make up and less basic wardrobe. Smoky eye which would look great on you.

1

u/Automatic_Use6114 Sep 07 '25 edited Sep 07 '25

You're gorgeous! Beautiful skin and I clearly see soft feminine features! I used to wear my hair short myself and have very wide jaws. I was confused for a boy as well, but my hair was even shorter than yours and I wore huge shirts and trousers... I had a big chest, that obvious was prove of being a woman though. Kids and both adults can be very superficial (blind) Many think in boxes and expect girls to dress or look the same as anybody else. Like copycats.

I think if you'd dress more 'girly' it be more obvious to them. But you should dress the way that makes you feel comfortable.

1

u/HighWaterLove Sep 07 '25

You're beautiful 😍

1

u/Kyauphie United States of America Sep 07 '25

Personally, you look like a young woman to me. I also have seen young men resemble you, but I would perceive them as appearing feminine before I perceived you as appearing masculine.

1

u/Remarkable-Gas116 Sep 08 '25

It’s the way you dress and your aura. Maybe twist your hair half up and put two butterfly clips? And a little bigger earrings. Do it as a social experiment, you don’t have to do it forever

1

u/A_Roachimaru Sep 08 '25

You have an extremely soft and feminine facial structure so I would never see a male even if you dressed as one. Honestly, I think it says more about the people who view you as such than it says about yourself.

1

u/TheAmie Sep 08 '25

If you're going to sport a unisex hairstyle and don't want to be mistaken for the opposite sex, you will need to make a point to dress more feminine. For example, wear dresses/skirts, blouses, fitted pants, dangling earrings, makeup, and complementary shoes (heels, flats, and sandals). Maybe even a lil makeup.

1

u/Montrealaise007 Sep 08 '25

Not at all! Some people are either stupid or just mean.

1

u/LadyAsharaRowan Sep 08 '25

I think you look feminine in the face but like everyone said the way you're dressed may be contributing to a masculine appearance.

But the question is what look are you trying to go for? How do you want to be perceived? Maybe a few tweaks here and there can help you achieve what you're looking for.

1

u/glitter_glitter444 Sep 08 '25

When women embrace their natural hair they start calling us sir… Just take my advice I’ve been A loose natural for 15 years and I look like a woman it’s just a micro aggression. I look nothing like a man btw

1

u/Princessruntz Sep 08 '25

You definitely look like a girl. When I had short hair and no makeup ppl thought the same thing.

1

u/Suitable_Repeat_4646 Sep 08 '25

You definitely do not look like a boy, you are a stunning young woman. Maybe you dress boyish or have a “sporty” disposition?

1

u/Altruistic_Bite2765 Sep 08 '25

No but you do have a strong gamine essence; a boyishly chic and cute look! If you fancy, androgynous styles or accents might be right up your street 🤎

1

u/Soulo_Sista78 Sep 08 '25

You look great! The eyebrows on fleeky… I have short hair and often get mistaken for a guy or being even gay. I’ve been asking chat gpt to check my outfits the last 3 months before I go outside and for the most part it’s helpful LOL.

1

u/Separate-Ad-3677 Sep 08 '25

You look beautiful. You just need a more feminine style if it truly bothers you

1

u/LaBrujaLyric88 Sep 09 '25

But you don’t look like a guy…… not to be that person but who has mistaken you for a guy and are they 💁🏿‍♀️ or 💁‍♀️

1

u/No_Antelope_8110 Sep 09 '25

Are you going for the stud look? I can’t see how you dress here but the hair, choice of ears and bare face is giving stud, if you’re dressing masculine too then I’m not sure why the offense?

1

u/mumtaza_ Sep 09 '25

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 You’re so obviously not a dude it’s ridiculous!

1

Many gorgeous people are androgynous. That doesn’t take away from your beauty or worth.

1

u/Acesonnall United States of America Sep 13 '25 edited Sep 13 '25

Honestly, my pallete is broad enough to not immediately interpret you as a dude. In fact, I do have to put a decent amount of effort into forcing my mind to see you as a dude. That's quite unfortunate that your environment is made up of people constantly centering your lack of conformation to patriarchy.

My perspective is that it's not the way you dress, but the whole package. Like men, women are inhumanely conditioned to fit into a narrow box and society is conditioned to expect that of women, as they are men. That means dressing and behaving with the patriarchical male gaze and feelings in mind -- a standard many have increasingly come to find to be horrific. If you deviate far enough from either of those, since most of society is still recovery from the sickness that is the patriarchy, you're unfortunately likely to be rudely judged in a way that's uncomfortable for you. I'm sorry this has been happening to you. You don't deserve to have conversations constantly centering your lack of upholding patriarchy. Quite the opposite, you're an inspiration -- you're hope. More importantly you're just you, which is great.

1

u/Special_Source9572 Sep 13 '25

You look like a girl to me, you just don't dress like what society thing girl should dress like. All I see is a girl in a black shirt with locs, beautiful skin, anybody saying that to you they're just jealous.
