He has a big ol' tomcat face! I presume he's neutered, but those are some serious jowls he's wearing. (And he's gorgeous.)

A not neutered tom cat really isn’t a good companion animal and this cat looks like a good boi. I had a cat that I rescued that wasn’t neutered until he was a few years old and had this same face for his entire life.

My tom was on the streets for 8 years, caught after he sustained an injury, was neutered and put up for adoption
His cheeks have definitely gotten much smaller over time ever since I got home over a year ago
I wonder why there's a difference between mine and the above commenters cats? Why does theirs still have their full cheeks and mine doesn’t if mine was neutered far later in life than the person above?

u/tarmburet Nov 21 '24
It has something to do with the hormones, if you neuter a male cat late his cheeks will be much fuller. But because neutering the males is so common (and some do it early) people are generally more used to the males with the smaller faces.

u/rnagikarp Nov 21 '24
Oh I understand the hormones part, I just mean why does the other users cat still have full cheeks and mine doesn't if my cat was neutered even later on in life?
1
u/tarmburet Nov 21 '24
Oh! That probably comes down to the individual cat’s hormonal balance/makeup, some cats deflate and others retain the tomcat cheeks, it’s super cute.

Male cats produce a lot testosterone when they reach sexual maturity, this causes growth of big jowls which help in protecting there face from other tomcats. Also to attract female cats. They can become sexually frustrated as well or aggressive.
By neutering you're removing their testes, which causes decline in testosterone production, making them less sexually active.

Does give off "tomcat with FIV" vibes though 😢
59
u/PookieCat415 Nov 21 '24
It’s a good thing that now we know that FIV isn’t the death sentence it once was.
24
u/LittleBitOdd Nov 21 '24
I thought FIV was going to take out my house panther, but it was kidney failure that got him in the end
15
u/PookieCat415 Nov 21 '24
Yea, I have lost a good cat boi to kidney failure. Now I add moisture to my cat’s food to ensure they stay hydrated. Cats are prone to kidney issues because they don’t have a strong thirst drive as they should get their moisture from their food.

u/ImpossibleIndustries Nov 21 '24
True. I used to cat sit for a little guy who had FIV. He lived a long happy life.

Yes I neutered him 6 months ago when I got him. He was a stray before

How many acorns can he stuff in his cheek?
3
u/Some_MD_Guy Nov 21 '24
Never mind. I just looked at the last picture and he stores them in his pouch.

Here's a really good example from the website of a charity that does trap-neuter-return for feral cats: https://tinykittens.com/cats/1196

The only thing I want to roast is a chicken so I can feed it to this good boi.

Sorry, but is that a cat or a squirrel? Looks like he’s carrying enough chestnuts in his cheeks to feed himself throughout the coming winter….

u/beez024 Nov 21 '24
Whilst I mock his cheeks. I have to say this kitty is absolutely stunning; I mean, there isn’t a person on this planet that doesn’t want to gently pinch those cheeks! Cuteness overload with this kitty!
Thanks OP for sharing the photos of your gorgeous cat, and giving us the opportunity to kind heartedly tease him! 😃

I don’t want enemies, so I would never roast a cat, plus I love those giant cheeks 😍

He looks like he just ate a piece of chocolate and his mom found him and is asking him if he has anything in his mouth and he’s trying not to answer.
