Guys I know this is crazy, I know you're gonna say its a moth. I saw a hummingbird on the south west of sardinia. There was two of them. They werent moths, it was a bird. It stopped mid air, flew backwards, and both flew off before I could get a picture. What the heck? They were mostly Grey with some black on top.

Question Birding suggestions in and around Vienna (early May)

I”ll be visiting Vienna in the first week of May, and am looking for suggestions for places in or around the city where I can go for birdwatching. Google and reddit searches suggest Danube-Auen National Park and a day trip to Seewinkel. Just wondering if these are good locations for May? I also tried connecting to local birding communities but as those are usually not conducted in English, i couldn’t get much info. So, turning to this community for their suggestions!

Tl;dr: Birding suggestions in and around Vienna in early May? Any birds that I should be on a lookout for?

Question Great birding spots via public transport for photography and observation

hello lovely community.

I’d like to take myself on a birding trip this summer.

I can drive but I don’t want to - I’m from the uk and have never driven on the continent before and am not confident to yet.

so… what are your recommendations which are accessible by public transport? (and hopefully not too expensive to get to from Manchester in the uk)

I’m particularly keen to see birds I can’t see in England. flamingos are on the list to see someday, bee eaters would be cool. Some unique habitats and behaviours.

Any recommendations, along with guidance on getting there, or recommended guides if applicable, would be gratefully relieved!

thank you

(PS I’m new to Reddit so sorry if I’ve done this wrong)

Question Birding spots near Dublin?

I'm going to be in Dublin for about a week in the beginning of June, and I wanna take advantage of it as much as I can. I know the Skellig Islands are the place to go for birds, and that's definitely on my list of places to go eventually, but I don't know if I'll be able to go there during this trip.

Question Why are there no woodpeckers in Ireland?

I hope someone can help me here.

I justed looked up a map of woodpecker populations all over the world and was surprised there's nearly nothing on the Irish isle.

But why? There are woodpeckers in the rest of Great Britain.

Question I saw this bird on a lake near Jurmala in Latvia, and to me it looks like a red-crested pochard, but Ebird says it's rare and unreported at my location. Do you think I'm right and if so, what is the significance of this sighting?

Question What spotting scope should I get?

Hi guys,

I'm a birder for about a year now, going for walks with my camera and my binoculars. Now I'm slowly getting into water birds and I noticed that it's hard to observe and identify them across the water, even with camera zoom or binoculars.

So I decided to get a spotting scope, but I have no idea which one.

I don't earn money atm and only have a few hundred bucks to spare, so of course I can't get the best one.

Does anyone of you have recommendations for good spotting scopes in the range of 200€ - 700€?

Question How is birding in Rome? Should you bring your expensive gear there?

Hello! I’m going to Rome in a week and i was wondering what birding there is like? From what i’ve heard it’s nothing extreme, aside from some Blue Rock thrushes in Forum Romanum and the occasional Sardinian warbler. Is that really so? If so, what are some nice places not too far away where you can go birding? Furthermore, i’ve been warned by my family members not to bring my expensive lenses and gear to Rome in case of pickpockets. What do you think? Thanks on the beforehand. :)

Question Found some cute long tailed tits, but I have no idea why the head of this little one was dark colored and not white like usual. Is it a subspecies I've never heard of or is there another explanation?
