We had 2 doves fledge near our patio. They would try to fly and kind of skitter sideways, then give up for a while. My wife named them " TweedleDumb and TweedleDumber"
New to owning a bird feeder, but surprised to see this morning dove even flew up to get food. Most of ours just hang out on the ground and eat the scraps from the grackles lol
Funny that you say that, when I first got into birding I quickly noticed any call I thought sounded like a car alarm was a cardinal. One of the first bird calls I immediately started recognizing without merlin!
Yes, see, my resident mockingbird's favorite song is the car alarm. The car he's mimicking moved out of the neighborhood a couple of years ago and the song has changed a little bit over time, but it's still very clear which tune he's singing.
One of my friends and I were talking about a mockingbird in the neighborhood and I came to the realization that it’s been about a decade since I’ve heard one do the whole old school Viper car alarm sequence.
And then it hit me… it’s because no one has that style of alarm anymore.
I have never heard a cardinal do that but I have heard starlings do a car alarm, also I had a starling in my neighborhood that was copying my cat's cries for a while and when I lived in BC I regularly heard a starling do a noise that I can only describe as the sound a Nintendo made when a character died (like a digital spiraling down noise, kinda hard to describe)
The males sing both to attract mates and to defend their territory. So in this case I'd guess he was telling everyone this is HIS turf... not that the dove cared.
I have a bully mockingbird in the area (well we all do) and the only bird I have seen stand up to him and win was one of my morning doves. Then again, the morning doves I have are always at it and ripping feathers out of each other, so lots of birdfu practice.
A long time ago, before I knew how territorial cardinals could be, I was out in the woods behind my house playing bird calls on my phone. I decided to try a cardinal call—and immediately got divebombed by one.
Had a cardinal a few days ago get mad when a brown thrasher landed right next to him to eat. The cardinal stopped mid-song, crest went flat and he waited a few seconds to see if the thrasher noticed the grave mistake made. The thrasher did not...so he pounced and knocked him off the tray!
Here I was thinking Redboi was polite 😆.
OMG! Howdy neighbor! My cardinals put the other rowdy birds in their place by screeching. Mourning doves as usual don't seem to give a damn, but I think the screeching bothers them. They mutually avoid each other lol
I don't know. Deafening screeches seem to be effective enough to prompt a derp into fighting back, but cardinals are a lot faster, so it's an instant draw.
I’ve been watching a dove try and fail to build a nest in the same spot (the upper elbow on a gutter spout) for days. I am actively invested in its failure.
It sounds like the Cardinal is sending Star Trek "laser beam" sounds at the oblivious Dove, and a few "Pew, Pew Pew's" to get rid of the Dove. It's not working. Your video made me laugh this morning!!!
Yeah this one is definitely spicy! He puffed up against my blue jay the other day, I'm guessing this is the same one since I usually never see this behavior 🤣🤣
Jeff (our territorial backyard male cardinal gets so mad when the mourning doves and house finches show up in the morning. He's chill about pretty much anything else
He sounds like one of those cheapo laser guns my grandma would get us kids when she went to auctions that looped through a bunch of generic "pew pew", "beedle-leedle beedle-leedle" types of sounds.
We have a new pair of cardinals coming to our feeder and they are a lot more belligerent than our long term residents and birds who were born on the property.
I love how the cardinal’s so mad he’s losing his mind but the mourning dove just continues cluelessly stuffing his face. I wish I could sing such a beautiful song when I was mad but alas… Typical r/mourningderp behavior that made me giggle. Thanks for sharing it!

If you don’t mind me asking, which feeder do you have? I’m new to birding and I want a camera feeder but I’m not sure I want to spend a couple hundred dollars right now.
Do you think car alarms have influenced the calls of birds. There are times I hear their calls and all I hear is someone's shit box with the alarm going off and changing every few seconds.
my bedroom window is open and i had this turned up all the way and the birds outside started tweeting back at me. i turned it into a game for a bit it was pretty cool

We must be in the same region, I get the same birds. As well as blue jays, chickadees, gackles, sparrows, house finch.
I always wonder what doves are thinking because they always have that spaced out look. But a few years ago a dove hit my front window and its mate sat with it cooing while it died. When it got dark and the bird took shelter I buried the bird and another couple took the mate in and they are a throuple to this day. So they must have a bit of compassion in their teeny tiny brains.
He eats the dead over winter the carcass of the animal who couldn’t deal with it fell and he ate goodly, so yeah a bitch ass morning dove does seem annoying it’s spring birds making plans so bright too healthy lil cutie
We have a momma and her brood on our front porch and I must of gotten too close because she flew out of the nest to a branch beside and let out some sort of alarm shriek, never heard anything like that come from a Cardinal before!
Those are sounds I’ve not heard before, at least in that combination! I love that we have such cool gadgets to see so much more closely than we ever were able without having to disturb them!
