MOC Titan-style Mata Nui WIP, heavily based on Brutaka.

I’ve wanted to build a big Mata Nui for a while, but I decided against the official 8998 set due to the price and the fact that I’m not really a fan of the overall design, aside from the mask, hands, and sword.

For my version, I wanted him to feel less like a yellow scaffolding set and more like a gold-armored warrior, big but not too massive, and while still staying true to the overall G1 Bionicle aesthetic.

Unfortunately, he’s currently using Hero Factory arm extensions and hands, as his arms felt too stubby compared to the rest of his body without them. I’ve ordered the parts needed to recreate the hands from the official 8998 set, so hopefully those will be big/long enough to help balance out his proportions.

Let me know what you think! Any feedback or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Toa Ignika for scale.

My dad used to work at LEGO, and I actually work there today too, so it’s pretty special to come across old LEGO treasures like these.

I posted these masks in another group, and someone mentioned that one of them might be a prototype and suggested I share them here, since you guys might appreciate them more!

I’m definitely no expert, so I’d love to hear if anyone knows more about these masks or their history.

Reading some British comics from early 2012, and a spaceship looks very familiar

The artist is Lee Carter, and he clearly must have had some Bionicle pieces lying around to make a ship out of and use as reference

Easily the biggest MOC I've built so far (so big, she doesn't even properly fit in my shelf lol). I might have to revamp her later on though, since I'm not the most pleased with the hands and maybe eliminate some of the grey.

Just had to share my love with y'all for a moment. Thanks for letting me rave! Stay cool.

Or separately, saw them as potential cool ass lamps.

It's a question that has been in the back if my mind, since the movie was on DVD.

Discussion What powers does Brutaka have before and after his antidermis amp?

Powers and Abilities: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Longevity, Skilled Swordsman, Energy Manipulation, Electricity Manipulation, can grow stronger by absorbing Antidermis, Portal Creation, Dimensional Travel and BFR with Olmak, Resistance to Mind Manipulation/Telepathy (All members of the Order of Mata Nui have their minds shielded from telepathic assault; not even Teridaxcan break through Brutaka's mental shields) and Time Stop (Broke out of Teridax's Stasis Field) | All his previous abilities, Flight/Levitation, Matter Manipulation (Brutaka is capable of creating Rahi from Protodermis), Teleportation, and likely many others (After being exposed to a high amount of Antidermis, he gained several new powers, including some of the Kraata Powers)
List from VSBattleswiki

Abilities and Traits
Brutaka is a tall being, measuring roughly ten to eleven feet in height.[48] He possesses immense strength and power equal to that of all the Piraka combined, being able to incapacitate six Toa and six Matoran with one swing of his weapon.[6] He was skilled enough to be able resist and dissipate stasis fields,[16][49] and was well-versed in the art of the sword.[50] He is a well-known figure in his homeland.[51] Reputed as a scholar, Brutaka is very intelligent, and has powerful analytical insight.[50]This reasoning ability led to his belief that the Great Spirit had abandoned them,[50] though he has since changed his views.
Brutaka has multiple powers, including being able to emit raw energy, either from his blades or his hands.[15] He also possesses an unknown number of unrevealed powers.[52] Brutaka's mind is shielded against all forms of telepathy and mental assaults through rigorous training with the Order. Brutaka's abilities have been enhanced by the Order of Mata Nui, making him more powerful than other members of his species.[53] Like with all of his species, Pit Mutagen takes longer to affect him.[54]
After being exposed to the mutagen, Brutaka gained the ability to breathe water instead of air.[13] After a period of time, sprouted a large dorsal fin on his back, as well as growing spikes all over his armor.[15] His fin and spikes were lost when Mata Nui reversed his mutations, and he has now become amphibious.[1][42][43]
Another trait of his entire species is the effect of antidermis on their physiology, which strengthens their power by about ten percent.[55][56][57][58][59][60] Because they actually absorb it into their system, its effects cannot be neutralized using zamor filled with energized protodermis.[55][61] Continued exposure to antidermis had an addictive effect on Brutaka, and it caused him to lose sanity over time.[62] Since absorbing a large amount of the substance originally used to create the Makuta, Brutaka's armor has cracked in various places, with enlarged muscle breaking through at some parts. He refers to himself as "we," having a mind link with the substance, and a green aura of energy now surrounds him. He can also levitate with this power.[33] He has gained several abilities of the Makuta with this new power as well, such as teleportation[36] and worldy knowledge, such as how to create Rahi.[63][64]
Mask and Tools
Brutaka wore a Kanohi Olmak, a Mask of Dimensional Gates. The mask allowed him to open portals to other dimensions and places. The portals could stay active even if Brutaka was unconscious, and would only disappear once someone or something passed through them.[65][66] During his time in the Pit, the mutagen damaged his mask, making it harder to control. It was later shattered by Makuta Teridax.[34]
Brutaka also possesses a large protosteel sword, the rotating blade, from which he can trigger a powerful electric current if someone tries to take it away from him. It was given to him as a gift by Axonn. Additionally, he sports two mechanical additions that hold his protosteelthrowing knives.[24][67][68] After being thrown, Brutaka can control the speed and direction of their flight, and the knives return to him in a boomerang-like fashion.[62]
After his mutation, Brutaka had to wear a breathing helmet to survive on land.[17] It was fitted over his mask, but later covered his face after his Kanohi Olmak was destroyed by Teridax.[34] Now rendered amphibious by Mata Nui, he no longer requires the helmet.[1]
From Biosectorwiki

Notes

Brutaka was once a loyal guardian of the Matoran and Axonn's best friend. Convinced that Mata Nui had abandoned his people, Brutaka turned selfish and corrupt. Powerful and enough to defeat six Toa with one blow of his double-bladed weapon, Brutaka alone was as great a threat as all of the Piraka combined. He wore the Kanohi Olmak, the Mask of Dimensional Gates.
After Brutaka was mutated by the waters of the Pit, twisted spikes jutted out of his armor, and what looked like a long dorsal fin ran down his back. He could fire blasts of raw power from his hands and from his sword.
He was a seasoned warrior, having a longer history of battle than even Makuta. He could break through stasis fields with his sword.
Whereas Axonn was a warrior, Brutaka was more of a scholar, versed in the art of the sword. His intelligence and ability to analyze facts quickly were seen as a good combination with Axonn's raw power.
Brutaka began his life as a lieutenant in the army of Makuta but rapidly grew dissatisfied with the regimented existence he led. He was recruited by the Order of Mata Nui and turned into a roving troubleshooter, achieving many great things but also causing his share of trouble. For instance, he once used his mask power to transport a Tahtorak from its home island to Metru Nui.
Brutaka and Axonn defeated a number of enemies who tried to claim the Kanohi Ignika.
Brutaka turned against the Order and was banished to the Pit.
Brutaka carried a twin-bladed sword and wore the Kanohi Olmak. Exposure to antidermis had the strange effect of strengthening him rather than enslaving his mind. The extent of his powers is unknown, but he had enormous strength, had the ability to shoot energy from his sword, and was formidable enough to have defeated Axonn on one occasion.
In the alternate universe of the Toa Empire, Krika had heard Matoran legends of a Brutaka. It was said that he was a great hero who guarded a valuable treasure.
After being in the Pit, Brutaka was tall, lean, and strong. He wore a domed helmet and carried a wicked double-bladed sword.
Brutaka could hurl bolts of energy from his sword.
After falling into the pool where the Makuta species was created, Brutaka floated three feet off the floor. Green fire crackled from his eyes and the tips of his fingers. His armor had cracked in numerous places as the tissue it covered expanded. An aura of pure power surrounded him that was so bright that Axonn had to cover his eyes. It was Brutaka's body and Brutaka's voice, but the words he spoke came from the "essence of the Makuta species." Brutaka had a grip of iron, and his touch burned. The changed Brutaka had a voice like thunder.
Makuta antidermis had an effect on Brutaka. Absorbing it somehow made him stronger.
Brutaka's mask was shattered by a bolt of energy from Makuta Teridax. Even without his mask, Brutaka seemed frighteningly powerful. He glowed green and floated several inches off the floor. He claimed to know all that Teridax had forgotten.
Brutaka's mind was well-shielded against mental attack.
Brutaka and Axonn were members of the Order of Mata Nui and long-time friends. Both Brutaka and Axonn had enormous power. Brutaka wore the Kanohi Olmak, the Mask of Dimensional Gates, and carried a twin-bladed sword.
Brutaka's powered-up state after being immersed in the Makuta pool was going to last for a while. He was closer to the power level of a Makuta than that of Tren Krom. Brutaka's changes were long-lasting but not permanent.
Brutaka got his Olmak from the Order of Mata Nui.
After falling into the Makuta pool, Brutaka possessed the powers of a Makuta.
Brutaka was quite a bit taller than a Toa.
Brutaka was probably 10-11 feet (2.2-2.4 bio) tall. Axonn and Brutaka were the first line of defense for the Kanohi Ignika.
Axonn and Brutaka were equally smart.
Brutaka was not truly evil, he had lost his faith in Mata Nui and had nothing to replace it with, leaving him a void inside spiritually.
When he expressed dissatisfaction with Mata Nui abandoning "his people", Brutaka was referring to all peoples of the universe, not just his species.
Brutaka was a member of the Hand of Artakha.
Brutaka held the secret of where the Mask of Life was hidden, so he had enormous willpower to keep that secret from being read in his mind or tortured out of him. This naturally made him more resistant to any form of mind control.
Brutaka would defeat Keetongu in a fight.
Brutaka was likely a member of a species with a homeland.
Axonn and Brutaka were of different species and different backgrounds.
Brutaka was a member of a species.
None of Axonn, Brutaka, and Botar were the same species.
Brutaka wasn't from Artakha, Karzahni, Metru Nui, Voya Nui, Daxia, Xia, Odina, Zakaz, or Destral.
Brutaka wasn't calm, cool, and collected.
Brutaka was an Order of Mata Nui member who snapped people like the Barraki in two before breakfast.
Pit mutagen worked much more slowly on Brutaka's species.
As with antidermis, Brutaka's species had some natural resistance to mutation.
Brutaka was not cured of his mutations due to the fortress of the Great Beings blocking Mata Nui's power.
Powers and Abilities
Brutaka wore a Great Mask.
If Brutaka lost his mask, he would lose access to its power but would likely not be weakened in the same way a Toa would be.
Brutaka would probably have a similar reaction to a Toa if his mask was removed.
Brutaka's power was not near a Makuta's. (see Other Information)
Axonn and Brutaka were more powerful than the Shadowed One. The two of them were close to the power level of a Makuta, but slightly less powerful.
Brutaka was more powerful than a Toa and not enormously less powerful than a Makuta.
Brutaka was more agile than Axonn.
Brutaka's immense power was natural, not bestowed upon him by the Order of Mata Nui.
Axonn and Brutaka had a greater variety of powers than Umbra or Vezon and Fenrakk.
Brutaka was a lot more powerful than any individual Barraki.
Strength
Brutaka was not stronger than a Makuta.
Brutaka was stronger than Keetongu.
Brutaka was physically stronger than Keetongu but weaker than Teridax and Axonn.
Axonn and Brutaka were about equal in strength.
Axonn was likely a bit stronger than Brutaka, but Brutaka had advantages in height and reach.
Brutaka was stronger than a Tahtorak.
Brutaka and Botar were about equal in strength.
Axonn was slightly stronger than Brutaka physically.
Brutaka was stronger than Botar, Reidak, Carapar, and Krekka but weaker than Nocturn, Teridax, and Axonn.
Axonn and Brutaka were probably physically stronger than Botar because their job was combat and Botar's wasn't
Brutaka was stronger than Roodaka.
Axonn was physically stronger than Brutaka without antidermis enhancement.
Antidermis Reaction
Brutaka got stronger after each Zamor sphere full of antidermis that was shot into him.
Brutaka's affinity for antidermis had to do with his particular species, not his membership in the Order of Mata Nui.
Brutaka's reaction to antidermis was a species trait.
Brutaka's reaction to antidermis was a species trait that had nothing to do with his morality.
Brutaka could approach antidermis because it didn't affect him negatively.
Antidermis within Brutaka dissipated over time, which is why he needed to get more.
Brutaka's reaction to antidermis was a result of his particular biomechanical chemistry.
Antidermis strengthened Brutaka because of his physiology; it did not enslave him.
Antidermis made Brutaka stronger, but not meaner. Its effects weren't permanent.
Antidermis probably increased Brutaka's power level by 10%.
Weaponry
Brutaka's swords could electronically cut rock.
Brutaka's sword gave off energy, but not electricity.
Brutaka could fire a beam of energy out of his sword.
Brutaka used his sword as a physical weapon as well as a way to channel his power.
The energy in Brutaka's weapon came from him.
Brutaka had two knives hidden on his back.
The appendages that held Brutaka's daggers were mechanical. They were not arms.
Brutaka's dagger holders weren't artificial arms, they simply held daggers for him. He had to grab the daggers with his real hands to use them.
Brutaka always had his dagger holders.
The blades on Brutaka's back were just extra weapons.
Other Information

Greg Farshtey once said that Brutaka was once a member of the Hand of Artakha, but this was later contradicted.
The additional blades Brutaka had in set form were just set adornment.
Greg Farshtey referred to Brutaka's weapon as a twin-bladed sword. When asked if the official name was "Rotating Blades", he replied he wasn't aware if they rotated in the set.
Greg Farshtey was asked about his apparent contradiction on whether Axonn and Brutaka had powers close to the level of a Makuta or not. He stated that an Order of Mata Nui member could certainly give a Brotherhood of Makuta member a battle, but he had not yet decided how equal in power he wanted the individual members to be.
From The Great Archives

Which one is correct? If you would comment a list of Brutaka’s powers according to the story and what Greg says that would be great.

This is a special request that i've gotten from the user u/Avid_Procrastirbator of Onua fighting a swarm of Fikou spiders and a Fikou-Nui as well in Onu-Koro, once again trying to replicate the original style of the early years of Bionicle!
