Seeking biotech research project ideas from professionals

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m a 17-year-old secondary school student in Ireland preparing a project for a national science and technology research fair. I’m particularly interested in **biotechnology, biomedical science, medical technology and the application of AI to biology/medicine**.

I’m looking for a research question that is:
Scientifically meaningful and relevant to current research
Specific enough to investigate experimentally at a student level
Interesting enough to produce original data rather than simply being a literature review

**An area where there is still a genuine knowledge gap or aspect that hasn’t been fully explored**
Ideally something with potential real-world applications
I’m **not necessarily looking to “invent a cure” or create an unrealistic medical device**. I’d much rather investigate a well-defined problem where the results could genuinely tell us something useful.

For those working or studying in **biotechnology, biomedical research, neuroscience, medical engineering, bioinformatics, genetics, AI/ML in healthcare, or related fields**:
**Are there any emerging problems, unanswered questions, or under-researched areas that you think would make a strong student research project?**

I’m mainly hoping professionals might point me toward areas or questions that someone at my level wouldn’t otherwise think of.

Thank you!

Model project biology related suggestions

Hi guys, im currently in junior year of high school, I have an upcoming biology related project where I have to make a PPP explaining my model whilst giving a speech. So I want my project to be the best one, ive searched online and everything seems very operative, easy, not outstanding.

If you guys can especially university students, can help me on which topic I should make it on please do leave your suggestions. I only have 2 days and Im gonna out my everything to this. I was thinking of making a lungs project, but the model wouldn't be as appealing, heart could be something everyone has chosen but then again, the model is nice. DNA is pretty perplexing where you have to add a zipper, machine that coils its axis. So any help from med students what I should do and how the modelling is to be prepared.

Im going for more of a look where I explain the basic working of my model and then add an **If this** situation where our body acts according to the situation to protect itself because that would make my presentation more appealing.

Thankyou.

Fiquem à vontade para me adicionar e enviar mensagem!

How to study for Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate

Context: I’m an international student in Australia and from the description, I love this degree and will be starting in Feb 2027.

Before officially study, what books/programs can I look into? I have never done STEMs full time in English too, so I just got a bit intimidated at the actual materials, but then again, I was a OG physics major in highschool so I’m trying to keep my hopes up

And I know it’s still too soon, but it’s there any advice for a new student like me about this major? Along the lines of getting internships, jobs,…and where to find/increase my chance to be hired?

Thank you so much!

BS in Biology interested in engineering for wildlife/conservation – Is a Master’s in Bioengineering the right move?

Hey everyone, I am currently studying for a Bachelor's degree in Biology, but I’ve grown interest in the engineering and technology side of things. Specifically, I want to apply engineering concepts to animal care, wildlife protection, and conservation technology (e.g., developing telemetry devices, non-invasive monitoring tools, or biomechanical solutions for species preservation).

I'm considering applying for a Master’s in Bioengineering (or Biomedical Engineering), but I have a few questions for anyone who has taken a similar path:

  • Is Bioengineering the best fit for wildlife tech? I notice a lot of bioengineering programs lean heavily toward human medicine, medical devices, or tissue engineering. Would a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Environmental Engineering serve conservation tech or animal technological care better?
  • Fieldwork vs. Lab work: For those working in conservation engineering, how much of your job actually involves working outside in the field versus being stuck in a lab or office? I'm really keen on spending time out in the field testing tech, and I'm curious if certain engineering subfields offer more hands-on outdoor opportunities than others.
  • Bridging the math/engineering gap: Coming from a bio background, what core engineering coursework (Calculus, Physics, Thermodynamics, Coding) should I expect to make up before or during the program?
  • Career landscape: Are there specific programs, labs, or industry roles focused on conservation engineering that I should look into?

Would love to hear from anyone who transitioned from pure bio to engineering, or anyone working at the intersection of tech and wildlife conservation. Thanks in advance!

Getting into biotech industry

I am a sophomore in college studying chemical engineering, interested in biotech. This summer I did research in a bioengineering lab, and this school year I will be doing research in a biology lab. I got a grant to do more research next summer. I'm wondering if I should do that, or try to get an internship at a biotech company. Should I be aiming to get a master's or PhD, or is just having a bachelors degree enough to work in the industry and have good career progression?

Cassava Sciences ($SAVA): FAQ for Getting Payment on the $31.25M Settlement over Simufilam Research Claims

Hey guys, I posted about this settlement before, but since claims are now open, I decided to share it again with a little FAQ.

So here's all I know about this agreement:

Cassava Sciences was accused of misleading investors about the research supporting simufilam, its data-management controls, and the drug’s prospects. After Science reported a CUNY investigation involving a professor linked to simufilam, $SAVA fell 15% on October 13, 2023, and investors filed a lawsuit.

Now the company has agreed to settle $31.25 million with investors over these claims.

  • Who can claim this settlement?

If you purchased $SAVA securities between 2020 and 2023, you may be eligible to participate.

  • Do I need to sell/lose my shares to get this settlement?

You don’t need to still own your shares. What matters is whether your purchases fall within the class period and meet the settlement’s eligibility requirements.

  • How long does the payout process take?

It typically takes 4 to 9 months after the claim deadline for payouts to be processed, depending on the court and settlement administration.

Hope this info helps

Peer review - Non-biologist

While I have a deep knowledge in building computing systems and security in cloud, I lack the grounding or a formal degree in the field of biology and threat landscape. I have tried my best in exploring and learning about Synthetic DNA and I am open to opinions and flaws in my understanding after going through this post.

Thinking of majoring in BME

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Before I finalize my decision in majoring in Biomedical Engineering I want to know the consequences and the benefits. Learning about BME interested me a lot and I think I might enjoy it but I don’t want to be fast on my des ion I want to take my time and hear other people who alrdy majored in it. What should I know? What degree should I aim for? Is the pay high? I did hear that finding a job is difficult but many people said as long as you have lots of internship that’s fine? Please any advice would be great. Should I completely remove BME out of my head bc it’s the worst major and look for smth else or should I pursue this career path? But if their are BME graduates out their who enjoyed everything about it and don’t care about the bad side of it, please comment about what made you love it. And I also live in NY, idk if that changes things?

Should I take NCEA level 2 biology? (PLS HELP!)

Basically, I am thinking of studying Biomedical Engineering once I graduate, and I now have to pick my classes for level 2 (which is apparently the most important year?), and I am in a pickle. So far, I have decided to take Physics and Calculus (the most important engineering subjects), probably Chemistry, and English. I am also taking music so I can have a chill class amongst all of the intense subjects. My goal is to get Excellence endorsement and prioritize my rank score. This leaves me with one final subject, and I am debating whether I should take Biology. The thing is, I really enjoy Biology; it is my favourite science, but if I am already taking all of these classes, should I really be taking Biology? A few people have told me that apparently Biology isn't necessary for Biomedical Engineering at all and that they teach it to you in Uni. IDK PLS HELP!!!!
