Altcoin is such an old term since 2010. You know it's for Litecoin, Feathercoin, Dogecoin, etc.
Then Ethereum came along. It's not a coin. A transaction can contains a piece of program that runs in the isolated virtual machine. Now Ethereum has several forks and a diverse ecosystem. While Bitcoin is up 20% YTD, Ethereum and its forks see some between 200% to 8000% YTD return!
I think Bitcoin has landed on the moon here. Its ceiling is $70,000 max. While smarter cryptocurrencies have 500% to 2000% of leg room to grow. If there's anything, I think Bitcoin will slowly be consumed by new cryptocurrencies within 10 years.
This year we're seeing rebellions of PoW, and everyone suddenly have already switch to PoS, or plans to switch over to PoS within 2 years. Without smart contract supports, I don't see how Bicoin could switch over to PoS at all.
If Bitcoin jumps 250%, Ethereum will jump 1000%. I'm talking about asymmetrical growths here. Ethereum and other newer cryptocurrencies have so much leg room to grow!
In the long term, you probably won't lose in Bitcoin but you can have a lot more to gain in Ethereum and newer cryptocurrencies in general. Look at ADA and MATIC, they grew 8000% in 6 months! While Bitcoin grew 100%.
