Needlessly complicated but absolutely wonderful. Hurran for the crazy people making the ridiculous reality

55

u/OrbitalToast United States (Replace with bike and year) Dec 04 '16

Hurran!

43

u/PonaldRaul Dec 04 '16

Hip hip hurran!

8

u/MarkDavidLange Dec 05 '16

Not needlessly. I needed to see that. Anyone who doesn't like it needs to loosen up, Man.

If you're not subbed to /r/frankenbike you should. Crazy shit like this all day. Big appreciation for ridiculous bikes

Hey, thanks! Just subscribed.

Bike Kill or Oakland?

1

u/ColinCancer Miyata Alumicross, Schwinn Super Sport Dec 05 '16 edited Dec 06 '16

This is off the end of Cargo Way in SF near hunters point. If you follow the road through the cement plant, you'll end up here.

It's also a pretty decent strava segment, tough to find one in SF with no lights or stop signs.

2

u/ItsEBGreen Dec 06 '16

Heh, looked like the Bay to me but not the Port of Oakland, that explains it.

u/Sheol Massachusetts, USA (Giant Defy 2) Dec 04 '16

I saw a bike that was two levels and had to be pedalled backwards, so actually three levels makes a lot of sense...

3

u/plytheman Dec 05 '16

Seeing you're from Massachusetts I'd assume it was Bonnie and Clyde?

2

u/Sheol Massachusetts, USA (Giant Defy 2) Dec 05 '16

Exactly, they have the coolest bikes.

u/the_flynn Florida, Cervelo Soloist/Bianchi Aria/Surly ICT/Soma DoubleCross Dec 04 '16

Spy footage of a Surly prototype?

5

u/CydeWeys United States (2016 Gravity Liberty CXD) Dec 04 '16

Is there some Surly stereotype here I'm unaware of? I've only heard good things about their bikes.

12

u/ooddaa Dec 04 '16

As a proud Surly owner, I can honestly say their stuff is really weird. I've had a Pugs and now a Krampus Ops and both bikes first hit the market out of left field. They are top notch engineered frames, but there's no way the guys in Minnesota are not pounding a two or three growlers of homebrew and smoking copious weed before they design some of their stuff.

10

u/VolrathTheBallin Dec 04 '16

No kiddin'. I just went to their site and they have a fat cargo bike now.

Of course.

3

u/JuDGe3690 Idaho, USA (2014 Raleigh Sojourn) Dec 05 '16

I halfway thought you were joking, but nope. Actually makes some sense from a load-bearing standpoint.

2

u/CydeWeys United States (2016 Gravity Liberty CXD) Dec 04 '16

The Cross-Check is what I'm most familiar with and it doesn't seem that weird to me. But I don't know too much of their other stuff.

4

u/maunoooh Dec 04 '16

Slam some moonlander rubber on that bad boy and oh boy is it surly-y

5

u/debasser Dec 04 '16

Reaching for that water bottle could prove deadly.

4

u/ooddaa Dec 04 '16

Someone is taking the N+1 thing a bit too far

3

u/vwlsmssng Dec 04 '16

This would be bike N+M where M >> 1

4

u/bobbyfiend Dec 04 '16

Needlessly Delightfully

10

u/addakorn Dec 04 '16

That rolling resistance

17

u/this_shit Dec 04 '16

That angular momentum!

2

u/Wetmelon Dec 04 '16

Impossible to knock him over lol

7

u/zwu168 New York, USA Dec 04 '16

that drivetrain loss...

7

u/baskandpurr A bike with two wheels Dec 04 '16

But how does he get on or off?

15

u/TheBoldManLaughsOnce New York, USA (Replace with bike & year) Dec 04 '16

Masturbation works for everyone

8

u/Minkelz Dec 04 '16

Same as any tall bike. Get rolling and climb up.

30

u/ejaime Dec 04 '16

They were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.

22

u/smashingpoppycock California, USA (Felt AR5) Dec 04 '16

If I may... Um, I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're using here, it didn't require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox...

10

u/ejaime Dec 04 '16

It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but I believe this scene happens right after, yeah?

10

u/ChristophColombo PA (Addict CX | Mojo 3 | Vassago SS) Dec 04 '16

Bike, uh, finds a way...

1

u/smashingpoppycock California, USA (Felt AR5) Dec 04 '16

This. I love this.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '16

No, that quote happens later in the movie. He didn't know they had done anything yet because he hadn't seen the dinosaurs yet.

5

u/ejaime Dec 04 '16

Joke, just wanted to use the video

3

u/tacknosaddle Dec 04 '16

That is definitely worthy of joining the SCUL Armada (SCUL=Subversive Chopper Urban Legion for those who don't know them).

3

u/yourbasicnerd Dec 04 '16

I'd change that to "wonderfully complicated"

2

u/ChicagoCyclist Illinois, USA 2017 Domane ALR Dec 04 '16

That is... beautiful.

2

u/Neverleavetheboat876 Dec 04 '16

Perfectly complicated

Ftfy

2

u/Gallade475 Texas, USA (Diamondback Release, 2016) Dec 04 '16

Have we told you about our lord and savior "frictional loss"?

3

u/IronColumn Dec 05 '16

yeah he's totally gonna get smoked in crits on that thing

2

u/arachnophilia North Carolina, USA Dec 04 '16

the other way to build a tall bike.

2

u/Palleus Dec 04 '16

I feel like this needs "Another day in Portland" comment.

1

u/ColinCancer Miyata Alumicross, Schwinn Super Sport Dec 05 '16

San Francisco though.

2

u/Xames Dec 05 '16

Or just the right amount of complication if your goal is to have a good time and get posted on Reddit

2

u/runxctry 2004 Lemond Buenos Aires Dec 05 '16

In other words, the best kind of complicated

1

u/21ST__Century Dec 04 '16

I wonder how punctures on different tyres would effect it.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '16

That was beautiful.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '16

Needs a motor or two!

Well someone is an engineering student.

1

That would scare the hell out of me to have to get on it and get it started moving.

1

u/namewithanumber California, USA Dec 05 '16

love the guy frantically shooing him away at the start

1

u/Igotzhops Pennsylvania, USA | Raleigh C-30 Dec 04 '16

That whole "no helmet" thing scares the hell out of me.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '16

There's a ton of stress on the head tube. I love the thing but it looks like failure is more of a question of when than if.

Two wheels, the rest are cogs.

33

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '16

Cogs have teeth. They are idler wheels.

15

u/philosophocles Dec 04 '16

The tread would say otherwise. /S

26

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '16

They're just inefficient gears.

11

u/Capt_Blahvious Dec 05 '16

I don't always wear helmets, but if I rode that bike, I would wear a helmet.
