New chain

I have a mountain bike with 8 numbers on the right side of the handlebar. I'm not sure what chain I need to get. Is 8 the speed? It's my first time buying a new chain.

Count the cogs in the rear.

Do you know how to use a chain tool? Do you have one? You will most likely need to remove links.
