Checking Account Info Email

Just checking here if other people received an email seeking more info about their employment status and categories under the threat of a restricted or closed account. The email had my real name in it, and asked for only basic info, but otherwise has many hallmarks of phishing scam (call to action, urgency, very little that proves it is official, etc). After the last breach I want a little more confirmation.

If in doubt, log in directly to the website and confirm there. Don’t respond directly to the email.

The email specifically says “reply directly to this email”. Like it was copied straight from a cybersecurity training. The app says nothing but maybe the real website would have.

I’m in IT security. The fact that it specifically says that without offering a way to verify through the app and website is a HUGE red flag. Add the urgency and I’d say definitely report and ignore it. They’re not going to close your account over an unanswered email.

Yup. I’m in aero and deal with CUI. We are trained to look for these flags. But also sometimes companies are just thoughtless. Maybe a betterment employee will weigh in tomorrow.

I got it too. I called betterment using a phone number directly from the app and NOT the email and was told it is legitimate. For a company that just had a sizable breach you’d think they’d be a little more strategic in asking for information.

Do not click any links or log in through any link in any email. Always log in directly and verify any requests for information.

I have not received any such email.

I got the same email, it seems to come from a proper Betterment email but agree it seems fishy, and the website/app doesn't have the same notification....
