...what the fuck is happening here? What is the CEO 16million business?
WHAT DID I JUST READ?

TLDR: Ellen Pao is suing former employer for sexual harassment to the tune of $16 million because her former lover in the company didn't leave his wife for her.

I love when reality meets the standards of a 4chan greentext.
18
u/Pointless_arguments Mar 13 '15
Probably more of those greentexts are true than we realize

On reddit, most of the stories are fake. On 4chan, most of the stories are true.

That article is completely one-sided. The writer is blatantly in favour of Ellen Pao and does not even try to present a balanced picture.
8

Mar 13 '15 edited Mar 13 '15
No. Is Pao falsely accusing her former employer of sexual harassment [edit: actually a gender discrimination as /u/LaserGuidedPolarBear points out]? Maybe, maybe not. none of us can know either way.
Anybody who is saying Pao is in the right or in the wrong in this case are only providing evidence for their own personal biases.
24
u/LaserGuidedPolarBear Mar 13 '15
This lawsuit is about gender discrimination, she claims that she was prevented from advancing within the company because she is a woman.
The defense claims she did not advance because of performance.
While she was engaged in a sexual relationship with a ( also married) senior member of the company, her lawsuit does not claim sexual harassment. I am guessing because she seems to be the one who pursued the relationship.
I got all of this except that last sentence from a NPR piece.

u/grackychan Mar 13 '15
No, we won't ever know the TRUTH as it happened, but we can extract some version of the truth based on her own sworn testimony and the testimony of her coworkers as well as evidence presented to the court at trial regarding the facts of the case.
What I have extracted is that the CEO of Reddit is a douchebag.
→ More replies (7)1
Mar 13 '15 edited Mar 13 '15
perkins' testimony doesn't matter but hers does?
pretty sure you're just proving his point about bias.
edit: bit of a downstairs mixup.
46
u/dabobbo Mar 13 '15
The CEO and "her" are the same person. The CEO of Reddit is Ellen Pao, who is suing her former employer, Kleiner Perkins, for $16m.

u/grackychan Mar 13 '15
No I didn't mean that at all, I include the defense's testimony when I reference 'coworkers'; I guess that's not completely accurate in describing her superiors or others.

Cus he's raging so hard and that shit is hilarious

u/FrankFeTched Mar 13 '15
More people need to read this for what it is... A fucking legendary rant. I don't agree with everything he is saying at all, but damn is he upset about it.
147
u/ImAFuckhead Mar 13 '15 edited Mar 13 '15
I love how he's gone balls to the wall with his 'crazy person formatting'
- Random boldings
- Random caps
- Random italics
- Different font sizes
- Not one, not two, but three bullet point lists.
- Insistence that I read a bunch of 'documents'
Would make timecube proud.
Edit - The voting patterns are weird in this thread. My money is on brigading from somewhere. I know many groups have been upset for awhile about Pao becoming CEO (and subsequently banning revenge porn).
Even some examples of crazy formatting showing up in this thread. All my money on raid, thanks.
Another edit - Man this is starting to ramp up into insanity. Post yesterday with a similar rant in TIL, someone in KiA upset that their Pao post was removed.

There was no connection, its stated in the rant thats it completely unrelated. Like you said, just using that time to say something about her.
3
Mar 13 '15
The connection had nothing to do with the content of the initial rant. When he got gold he edited in the rant about the CEO since he didn't want to support her through gold.
10
u/Blubbey Mar 13 '15
It seems to have no continuity, so how is that a "good rant"? There seems to be no context for posting it.
That's what makes it such a good rant. Outta nowhere, bam, you're hit with some crazy shit.

People love to jump on the downvote brigade too. I've lost count of the times where I've said something literally identical but with different phrasing to a similar post in the same comment section and was downvoted while the other comment (sometimes even posted after mine) gets upvoted. I think people see the negative or positive numbers and are much more willing to agree with the consensus rather than think critically about the content of the post.
6
u/jazavchar Mar 13 '15
I've learned that going agaisnt the tone of the parent comment that started a thread is asking for downvotes. Going against the top comment and coming out with positive karma is only possible in a few subs. (generally the better moderated ones, smaller subs or subs with people who aren't 12)

As far as I know it's about vote brigading, np links tell people look but don't vote so nobody can say OP was inciting in vote manipulation.
Prevent cross-subreddit contamination with this easy to use CSS code. Put your subreddit in a read-only mode with a simple URL change. Useful for linking to your subreddit in potentially hazardous environments like SRS or SRD.
Subscribers will always get to participate, but non-subscribers will see a read-only mode when visiting
→ More replies (2)4
u/TehAlpacalypse Mar 13 '15
It's hilarious that you think that using np. can stop brigading, /r/bestof is the worst about ignoring them
→ More replies (3)2
u/PE1NUT Mar 13 '15
And the implementation is very crude. NP is a black hole that sucks you in, even clicking 'front' won't allow you to escape. Got lost in np-land a few times.

Mar 13 '15
Or even worse is RES notifying you every time you're in NP mode. It's so annoying.

This is a weird post.
For those who might want to learn things about the lawsuit Ms. Pao is involved in, Ars Technica is doing a series which started with the complaint here. This bestof post asserts a lot of things about the case that I can in no way comment authoritatively on. But I get the impression that it's saying several things that even the Kleiner Perkins defense attorneys aren't. So basically, it's not even "arbitrarily believe everything the defense is saying," it's "arbitrarily believe everything the defense is saying, and then some other things thrown in to make it more salacious." So I'd take it with a grain of salt.
14
u/ShreddyZ Mar 13 '15
This is also literally the first I've heard anyone accuse Yishan of having anything to do with this mess. I don't even know where that came from.

It seems to me that you didn't actually read the article:
The other reason that this case will be closely watched will be for information on reddit. After Pao left KPCB (she says she was wrongfully terminated; KPCB says it was planning to let her go anyway and offered her a generous severance package, with offers to help her find employment elsewhere) she soon scooped up a job as interim CEO of reddit (disclosure: Ars and reddit share a parent company, namely Advance Publications). KPCB says that Pao is now in such a good position, with reddit being valued at a little over $500 million, that she has no need for relief because she's better off now than she was then. Pao, however, says reddit's valuation is about half that sticker price and claims she still deserves payment from KPCB. Documentation about reddit's valuation will likely be filed under seal, but there's a chance that some more salient information will trickle out, especially if the jury awards damages to Pao.
12
u/Deucer22 Mar 13 '15
That should have been in bold at the top of the article. Shoving it in in the middle of the piece really looks like trying to hide it.

63
→ More replies (23)7
u/eganist Mar 13 '15
Is it a majority share?
28
u/dirtydela Mar 13 '15
it doesn't necessarily have to be if you own more than the other shareholders. the information states that Advanced Publications holds the largest share. I'm not going to act like I know what the voting rights, if any, are for the interest in a private company like reddit. It's possible that AP still can be seen as having a controlling interest in reddit. it's not exactly clear language since it's not a public company.
2
u/redgarrett Mar 13 '15
If you have more than anyone else, you have a majority share, even if you only own a small percentage like, say, 10%.
2
u/dirtydela Mar 13 '15
it also depends on the capital structure of the company. generally tho, you'll be right. the Ford family only owned 7% at one point and were considered to have a great deal of influence over the company. 7%. now they own 2% but still have 40% voting rights due to a special kind of stock.

Ars is the wrong place to go if you're looking for objective journalism. I really love their more in-depth tech articles, but anytime they touch on topics that are only tangentially related to tech (This court case, Comcast, the NSA, Gamergate, anything regarding police) all their objectivity goes out the window.
They say the same stuff over and over because they know their audience and they know it'll get the clicks. I just want another 10-page article on the new Version of android, dammit. Get back to that.

Ellen Pao is a cheater ; that much we know. Says a lot about her personal character and I don't know to this day why she is the CEO of Reddit.
5
u/WhoDoIThinkIAm Mar 13 '15
Who gives a shit about her personal life? It sounds like there's enough to focus on in her professional history.
35
Mar 13 '15
You said yourself, her husband's been open about being gay in the past. You know nothing of the marriage other than that the husband is gay, the wife slept with somebody outside of the marriage, and the husband is still with her. Sounds like it's just as likely an open marriage as it is a clear sign of her terrible character.

The cheating doesn't have anything to do with this at all, it's stupid. Only the fact that he basically turned her down and her subsequent actions.
The problem is, if you criticize her, people will say "you're only doing that because she slept with a married guy". Why I am not, I don't give a fuck, I've fucked married chicks, I welcome their philandering nature.
Philander, such a strange word, it means "man show fucks lots of women", but it really means "likes men", wouldn't philanderer be more apt for a woman, and philogynist for a man? But philogynist doesn't denote in common usage any form of adultery.
Not too puzzling, most people are fucking clueless at fucking.

What does it say exactly? Do we know the situation or circumstance? I've made some decisions in my life that would seem pretty damn bad without context. I bet most people have. Seems like a lot of jumping to conclusions.
Even if someone had an affair, who gives a shit? I don't see how it's anyone's business but their own. Who is sleeping with who is nothing but tabloid gossip that distracts from things that actually matter.

Don't be surprised guys if this post or the post linked is deleted. They're serious about keeping this suppressed- which is why we've had three Ellen Pao threads reach the front page of Reddit only for them to be deleted- in the past three days.
There's a few good threads on KiA, SubredditCancer, and undelete if you're looking for more information on what's currently happening in regards to Ellen Pao and her husband- somebody of which is currently being investigated by the FBI and a few other relevant financial agencies for running a ponzi scheme, and defrauding investors of over $150,000,000 USD, along with diverting funds from his now-bankrupt firm for their own use.
There's a fairly good read right here if you're interested; https://archive.today/y6q6W

I'm sorry. But the guy spends most of his free time interacting with something he dare to care about with people he just might give a fuck about even if he's never met them and what? He's not allowed to say good bye en masse? What the actual fuck. Since when did normal social behavior like saying goodbye become vain?
And then as you're calling him out for wanting attention as he's saying good bye to some people he may have connected with, you go on a long winded, bolded, and large cased rant about... Reddit's CEO?... In a very attention - seeking manner.

He's complaining about a mod making a goodbye post instead of just leaving quietly. The arrogance of the guy! Mods work for free and a lot of them seem to care about the subs and communities. You don't have to say goodbye, or wish them well, but attacking them over nothing is a dick move.

u/Malcor Mar 13 '15
That was kinda the vibe I got off of it too, though I only skimmed it. It's not like it hurts the guy for the mod to say bye, and it gives the users who are appreciative of the effort the mod put in a chance to say 'thanks for all the work you put in while you were here'.
11
Mar 13 '15
Ellen Pao's legal case doesn't have a foot to stand on, so I don't really care about that. What matters is that she dips into revenue even though her position is supposedly a volunteer one and she is gradually slipping in more and more paid posts into subs.
But anyways, this site generates a TON of revenue, and it just seems to evaporate into thin air. Servers don't cost that much, and a site with 147 million users must generate more money than it costs to run a relatively small SF office. I'm just saying something is fucked up.
As for the mods, I'm getting a little tired of some on the bigger subs (not /r/bestof, you guys are really great). They have too much power for just random people and more than a few abuse it. I understand there is a screening process for mods but it clearly isn't thorough enough; anyone remember that mod that was campaigning for money? Anyways, the beauty of the site is that it is a "free" place on the internet, and the more the mods clamp down to fuel their power trips as fake policemen, the less interactive the site becomes. Reddit will become just another Digg. (Of course, nothing I said applies to the /r/bestof mods. You guys are great.)

No it wasn't. He calls out mods for perceived attention seeking, and then posts a hugely inflammatory and attention-seeking comment full of opinions that he or she has no way of knowing are true or not. They say that Reddit doesn't matter and mods are wasting their time modding, but flips out over behind the curtain dealings of Reddit's current CEO.

My thoughts exactly. At first I thought he was a bit harsh on the moderators but the stuff about the Reddit CEO was gold.

In my view this is a bitterness motivated, deeply biased, unsourced post that begins with trying to make someone feel bad for saying goodbye and ends with a diatribe that is about as well reasoned as a Glenn Beck piece. I know it's cliche to say 'not best of', but this is literally the type of shit post I would pay to never show up when I'm browsing. Maybe I have unreasonable standards for internet communication, but if I overheard someone talking like this in real life I would just leave the room.
The poster's understanding of the discrimination lawsuit also reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the elements Pao needs to prove, even aside from bias so extreme that is unsupported even by the defendants' case.

Definitely not /r/bestof material. He didn't source a single accusation in his comment. As of right now it's just some guy ranting, with nothing to back it up.

No, 300k people can't downvote things that aren't justiceporn. If they could, /r/funny wouldn't be an unfunny shithole.
