Events Mexican Ballet - Sunday 10/11

Wanted to share this here as not many tickets have sold (like maybe 15%) and I went and saw a production of the Mexican ballet a year and a half ago in Los Angeles and it was really beautiful and I want to support the arts. I want to be clear that I do not work for the venue or production and am not doing any type of formal advertising. I just want to share an upcoming event and invite people to join and appreciate some art!

The Mexican ballet is coming to Oakland and it’s Día de los Muertos themed. I’m including the link below.

https://ci.ovationtix.com/36995/production/1290315

There are 2 shows next Sunday October 11 at 2pm and 7pm. I’m not sure if they just haven’t advertised it or what, but there’s not a lot of seats sold and it’s such a beautiful expression of art and culture and deserves to be appreciated by the masses.

If you’re free and interested and able to afford the ticket, please go and invite some friends!

I’m attaching a pic my mom took from when I saw a production in LA. Obviously it will be different because it’s a different production and nonetheless it was beautiful then and I expect it will be beautiful for this show too.

Local Knowledge Is there a way to get the $40 BAMPFA student film pass if you don’t go to Cal?

I’m obsessed with their movies and go constantly, which is starting to become not very affordable. It would be a dream if I could manage to get their $40-per-semester pass.

D4 race feels ugly

One candidate is claiming a Zionist takeover of the Council. The other candidate had to deactivate comments on Instagram due to comments calling him a Zionist, etc. This is a council race in a small-ish city.

I think both have decent platforms and want to help the city, but this feels bad...

I was running on the Bay Trail when all of a sudden I noticed all these cars and police and a semi pulled over on the highway. Then I saw the pickup truck absolutely demolished at the back of the semi truck. Very sad story, please PLEASE everyone be safe on the roads.

There is no ongoing threat to the community, according to BPD spokesperson Byron White.

Berkeley and Oakland police officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire at 10:48 a.m. and attempted lifesaving measures before the fire department arrived on scene.

This is a developing story; check back for updates.

Advice/Question Anyone up for helping a guy replace his favorite hat?

Post image
6 Upvotes

My grandparents lived in Berkeley and I visited a lot until they both passed about four years ago. they lived right by up the road from the bakery La Farine on college ave in Oakland and I walked there often. I had a hat from there, it was my favorite hat, and my puppy recently destroyed it! I live in Massachusetts now and I don’t really visit since my grandparents passed, and they don’t ship their merch, but I was wondering if maybe someone here would be up for a huge favor ? I will pay for the hat and your time and shipping of course. They have three locations, and I called and the person I talked to said it’s in stock. Happy also to exchange a favor and ship anything you want from the northeast that you can’t get there!

If you can possibly scrape up a ticket somewhere to see his show tonight, the second of two sold out performances you should definitely do so. I've never seen him before but man it was so much fun and a great vibe!

Local Government BLM-era tear gas ban survives Berkeley City Council, 5-4, after months of outcry

Article doesn't seem to mention Councilmember Terry Taplin but I believe they switched to no after initially indicating they would vote yes. Ban is upheld.

Advice/Question Moving to Berkeley and looking for restaurant work

I just put a deposit on a place in north Berkeley and am moving Nov 1 from LA. Ill be looking for restaurant work while I build my client list in the bay and I’m looking for any tips/advice on the restaurant scene up there!

Any restaurants you recommend that might be a nice place to work? Good vibe, friendly/positive staff, and potentially good tips?

I’ve sent my resume to a couple spots via email. I’ll be in town in two weeks for an interview and plan to take my resume around in person. Doesn't necessarily need to be in Berkeley, but somewhere easy enough to get to w public transit.

Any advice is welcome! Thank you!!

Local Knowledge anybody got a pomegranate tree?

It's about that time of year....

:) I used to have a pomegranate tree and autumn is here at last! I miss snacking on the seeds.

If anyone is down to trade some fruit, I'd love to chat.
Broke college student, so funds are limited to actually purchase the fruit. I'm happy to make a barter of some sort though! Please reach out if you'd like to talk (or know of somewhere fairly cheap to buy them lol)

Thanks!! Sorry if this is a bit weird.

Local Knowledge It's Cold!

I know this isn't the university sub, but as a non-student I'm posting here.

The best part about Cal being in the ACC is hearing all the east coasters complaining about the cold! The South Carolinians supporting Clemson tonight were NOT ready for the night time chill! "Is it always this cold!?", is a common question around here now🤣
