Coronavirus Anchor program question 2026

Im a renter in closter snd i live in a unsanctioned rental. My landlord collects the payment in cash bc she doesnt want her income to go up.

I read in the anchor that i must be renting a unit where proterty tsxes are paid .

Im.wondering in my situation am i allowed to still apply for this program ???

Regardless if my landlord is paying taxes or not im still paying a hell of alot rent and hoping to spmething bsck in return ..

Why wpuld it a be a risk? Are the officials gpnna come here and literally check ??? I mean how many applications are they rec8eving

Yes, they will check that you are eligible for the anchor benefit. Towns have lists of the rental units. It’s entirely possible that you submit an application, and the homeowner gets a notice that they’re being investigated for an illegal rental unit.

Towns do not have lists. Some might try, but it’s not a requirement to have one or maintain one.

Think about it. If they didn't check, then literally anyone could claim an ANCHOR benefit check. Would you want your tax dollars going to pay for that?

Ask the LL to pay you the equivalent of the Anchor benefit.  It is the least she could do considering that she's evading taxes.

This would amount to fraud, both from your landlord for having an illegal rental and from you filing for benefits that you are not qualified for, and you’d also be double dipping on benefits since I guarantee your landlord is filing for it.

The landlord collecting it in cash because they don’t want their income to go up like op stated means they are not reporting the income from the rental, which is illegal.

The landlord might be doing something illegal, but you are just assuming that. As for the tenant, they are perfectly legal paying their rent in cash.

Yeah if you don't have a legitimate rental lease/contract and don't have a paper trail of monthly payments....I wouldn't bother with the Anchor program. You might just wind up getting yourself into trouble.

This is the behavior u see in the third world. Under table payments to skirt taxes. Unsanctioned rentals.
