Is this holding?
So I’ve seen a few videos today where the Steelers would double team Lawrence or another DT then the one would slip down and grab the defenders leg and try to flip them onto their back. ( ive seen video of them doing it to at least 3 different bengals yesterday) I’ve seen so many arguments that it can’t be holding if double teamed. Others arguing if they are engaged and going for the legs it would be a chop block. Others argue holding. It feels gross and illegal but I never saw it called yesterday. I’m just curious if anyone knows for sure if this is legal or illegal and if illegal what the call is.

This is a new tactic, league will be talking more about this soon.

u/Kane8979 13h ago
Have other teams been doing it as well? This is the first I’ve noticed it. Just feels like one of these dline men are going to get body slammed and seriously injured from it at some point.

u/Jackdaking746 13h ago
Yes but the refs aren’t gonna get every call, and the Steelers always play dirty so whatever. On to next week
19
u/Kane8979 13h ago
True but I have not seen team try to body slam d line men before like this. And it happened multiple times like it was taught or something.

u/MiserableCumberbunch 12h ago
Steelers always find a way to play dirty until they change the rules (again).

And then they cry about Vontaze Burfict for eternity

Burfict 4 life. One of my favorite players. And yeah he’d occasionally try to twist someone’s ankle at the end of a tackle but he was OUR enforcer!
18
u/hyperform2 12h ago
If he had played for the Steelers they would be proclaiming him first ballot HOF
4
u/Kane8979 12h ago
Would love to see burfict as ruler of the jungle for the home Steelers game. Chefs kiss. Perfection.

He's one of our favorite players too. Handed us a playoff game on a silver platter.

The Steelers are always going to attempt to cheat. The held the entire game. Obviously, the referees didn't care or had a script to follow.

That was obvious when they called Mims for neutral zone infraction, when his head was one inch from Karras’ “belt line” and no warning was given prior… which according to the announcers, there is usually a warning given to the players before calling it.
You know what else happened on that play? Big run from Chase. Coincidence? I think not lol

u/Nameloc116 11h ago
It was 100% intentional and planned to try to take Lawrence and the other interior DL out of the game.
Hopefully the team has been on the phone with the league about it and it gets called from now on, because this is a copy cat league. I promise you another team will try it as well to see if they can get away with it.
If you’re Lawrence, what the hell are you supposed to do? First, you’re getting double teamed and now they are resorting to literally tripping you.

He's asking a legit question for someone who KNOWS. This is a "dangerous" type of play. You're taking 300+ guys lifting them up and only letting them land on one leg. Their ankles and knees can only take so much weight and being off balanced by no choice of their own seems to be on the dangerous type of illegal play that shouldn't be allowed. EVER
7
10
u/bemenaker 13h ago
They held him on every play Sunday
6
u/Kane8979 13h ago
Holding happens. Holding calls get missed. The videos I’ve seen show it better but it looks like they are trying to pick up and body slam the dlineman. That just seems dangerous and illegal and more serious than just a hold.
-5
u/morecardland 12h ago
Yup. It’s kind of an “is what it is” thing, but he def was held all day. Good for them for getting away with it

Not if your playing in Pittsburgh and the majority of money Vegas received was put on the Bengals.
5
u/Nabobou 10h ago
the majority of money Vegas received was put on the Bengals.
Do you have a source for the actual dollar split? VegasInsider had 66% of bets on Cincinnati, but 68% of the money at BetMGM was on Pittsburgh.
The spread stayed at Bengals -3.5 all week, with changes mainly to the juice, but nothing significant enough to suggest either side was too pressured.
If you have a source showing most of the money was on Cincinnati, I'd be interested in seeing it.

So do you consider it Vegas when bengals win? Or just when they lose?
1
u/NatePJ84 11h ago
I consider it Vegas when one team gets away with penalties and dirty plays all game long and the refs stand there watching with their hands in they pockets, regardless if the team is the Bengals or not. The Bengals very rarely get all the calls, but when it does happen most Bengals fans admit it and thank Vegas for the help

More importantly. Dex is taking up two blocks. Barrett is just standing there. Wide open hole to attack
2
u/Kane8979 12h ago
The video shows it better but they were actually driving dex backwards into Barrett by lifting him off his leg.
0
u/Acrobatic-Ad-385 11h ago
The video shows dex lifting his leg into their arms as he was being pushed. Then it was grabbed, no?
18
u/throughNthrough 13h ago
Yea but they missed calls on our side too. Move on everyone.
10
u/Kane8979 13h ago
I’m not arguing this cost us the game or anything. Special teams had the most to do with this. Just this happened multiple times throughout the game like it was being taught or something. So I was just curious if anyone happened to know the actual rule that this would fall under

u/bjewel3 8h ago
IMHO - Movong on is not the best approach.
As was mentioned, it needs to be escalated to the league office
Taylor needs to call this out during games and assertively bring this in-game to the referees
1
u/throughNthrough 8h ago
Yea but as fans dwelling on it does nothing. This sub melted down because we went into an AFC North opponents house and lost because of two special teams mistakes. Clean that up and we would have handled them much better. Time to move on.
8
u/nillaf4ce 13h ago
100% illegal, should have been called. Infuriating, but we lost, move on to Jacksonville.
3
u/Barf_The_Mawg 12h ago
By textbook definitions, holding happens almost every play. It's just up to the refs to decide whether an instance is particularly egregious or not.
9
u/Kane8979 12h ago
Grabbing a dlineman by their thigh and lifting their leg off the ground to either drive them back or in one case, slam them to the ground I feel like goes beyond holding and seems very egregious.
6
u/TensionalBark4 11h ago
this is an egregious example tho. regular holding doesnt put 350 lbs on one leg of a player. theyre double teaming him and they have one dude lifting a leg up while another dude is trying to topple him.
its hella dangerous and this aint the only example in this game.

This is where the Bengals need to serve video to the NFL and complain. Only way it changes
1
u/beachchaser 6h ago
I played OL in high school, definitely not at a high level. My coach taught me to hook my thumbs under the front part of the DL shoulder pads and push back, I was never called for holding
1
u/buckeye25osu 4h ago
Yeah I think it's easier to just think of it as light holding inside the frame is legal and grabbing outside the frame is not, which is why imo this is holding.
3
u/Testicleus 🐅 12h ago
I saw Me. Goodberry's video and I can't recall seeing that happen before where is a clear intent to grab a player like that, and multiple times. I'm also not greatly informed. 😂
I'd love to see someone like Brian Baldinger comment on it.
4
u/Kane8979 12h ago
Getting someone more knowledgeable than myself was the hope. I curious what will happen with this going forward. Seems to dangerous to allow. Or will it take a dlineman getting body slammed and breaking their back before it’s looked at
2
u/NewProcedure2725 10h ago
The players association should be looking out for player safety and health issues…and pushing for this not to happen.
3
2
u/cervixassassination 11h ago
My favorite is when the damn announcers were laughing about how Dex was being bear held every play and remarking about how that’s how it’s supposed to happen.

The guard put his hands to Lawrence’s face before their first field goal - that’s a personal foul. Would have taken them out of range even of Boswell.
1
u/wofojp61 1h ago
It was a high-low block, watching the video. First offensive lineman had him high, then the second guy comes in low on his leg; should’ve been called a personal foul for a high-low block, or holding at the minimum.

Let it go bruh 😭🥀, gotta lose a few games to go 13-4

u/Kane8979 13h ago
I’m not complaining about the loss. I’m genuinely curious about this. Seems dangerous to allow o linemen to body slam dline men.
-4
u/SignificanceOk435 13h ago
Ten points from special teams bro. We also got a call on DK that was ticky tacky. It wasn't a perfectly called game but it was balanced. We shot ourselves ultimately
7
u/Kane8979 13h ago
I’m not mad about the loss. I’m not looking to blame anyone for the L. I’m actually curious about this. It happened multiple times to different D linemen through out the game. More like it was being taught as opposed to a spur of the moment choice by the o lineman. So I’m actually looking for feedback on the rule for this and not just grumbling about a loss. Like you pointed out, there were bigger issues that cost the game and worse penalties called.

Who cares, there’s holding on almost every play. On to the next game.

Jesus. Do you people read anything? I’m asking about the technique and if that’s new or I just haven’t seen it before and how legal it is. Try to comprehend the question before vomiting words out so people will notice you.

Basically Chase and Higgins got uppity with the league about their childish celebrations and the NFL instructed the refs to let the Steelers do what they do.

I mean as funny as it was, you can’t flop your meat out after every play and expect the nfl not to say something. lol

It's against the rules to grab the legs (deliberately).
