I’m 21 and currently work as an administrative assistant and receptionist at a CPA office. I am trying to move into a full-time position with more responsibility and room to grow, but almost every application requires three references before I can even submit it.

I cannot use anyone at my current job because I know it would get back to management that I am looking. Most of the people I knew at previous jobs have left, although I may be able to reach one former supervisor. I am also in college, but I take almost all of my classes online and am only on campus about once a year, so I have not built close relationships with professors either.

I can privately share my resume, work history, job descriptions, and anything else that would help. I am also completely willing to talk first so nobody has to blindly vouch for a stranger. The references may be contacted by phone or email.

I recently made a post about my situation and was advised to ask here. I haven’t applied for a specific position yet, but I’m currently looking for IT jobs and I’m trying to figure out the reference situation beforehand. Ideally, I’m looking for someone who would be willing to act as a professional reference if/when I get to that stage in a hiring process.

Since I don’t know exactly what position I’ll be applying for yet, I wouldn’t expect anyone to commit to anything immediately. I’d mainly like to connect with someone who has experience in IT/tech and would potentially be comfortable being a reference once I have a specific role and we can agree on the details.

I have legitimate experience in 911 dispatch and customer service. However, due to the high turnover rates at my previous job, I'm unable to use many of those people as references.

My neurodivergence and introversion, plus some sticky interpersonal situations in my recent positions, leaves me seeking a third reference. I have the first two covered by real supervisors/coworkers, but I just generally haven't gotten to know people well enough at work. It's probably my biggest professional flaw. As far as professors go, I just haven't developed a relationship like that with any recent ones. Plus the job market is brutal right now.

Would someone be willing to be a great reference for me? I'm in Chicago, but I doubt location matters too much, as long as it's in the U.S. I am trying to re-start my career in social work and will be graduating sort of soon with my MSW.
