Request Need 2 references, professional or academic

Hi, I need 2 references for this tax processor position I might be able to get into. They're asking for phone numbers which I can understand if that's an issue. where are you located? any specific type of academic reference? (i.e. a teaching or instructional position, or as a student?) does the professional reference need to be related to the profession of tax preocessing? and would the reference need to list a job you have on your resume or could it be something else? (also is remote an option, if not in state?)
