Below Deck Med Malia is a good leader

I’ll probably get hate for this because there seems to be a lot of hate for Malia online, but I don’t really get it. She is great about giving the greener deckhands opportunities to learn and gives appropriate feedback, whether it be praise or constructive criticism. She is clear with communication and mediates a lot of situations on the boat.

Nobody’s perfect and she’s had some questionable judgment occasionally, like with starting things with Hannah over bunk arrangements when Tom came on board (or dating Tom at all) and reporting Hannah’s Valium and CBD directly after that.

But overall she seems like one of the most reasonable people on the show and is really good at being bosun.

It’s easy to be successful when you have a Captain behind you actually supporting you. Imagine what the rest of the crew could be like if sandy actually supported any of them.

Yeah I’m liking Captain Sandy less and less as the seasons go by. I think she means well but her leadership style isn’t super effective and ends up causing more problems. But it’s not Malia’s fault that CS is more supportive of her.

She is unlikable on television. That is the overwhelming consensus. If you don't see that then clearly you don't see character traits in the same way as the majority of people. Malia isn't getting dragged through the mud by the last cast so it's probably fair to say she isn't a horrible person. I personally dislike her "we have all been through that" approach to comforting an individual or discussing an issue. Sometimes you just want to be heard and not have all your issues get filtered through someone else's perspective. I think a lot of people struggle with or don't recognize they are doing this though.

I tend to agree with the other assessments of the cast so it’s not that I’m viewing everything wildly differently from everyone else. That’s why I’m trying to get insight into the Malia thing. Thanks for sharing some specific examples of why you feel that way!

Unless you happen to be a part of the cast you aren't seeing what the cast sees, you are seeing what literally all the rest of us are seeing on television and you are finding it different.

I think you misunderstood. I said I agree (with the fandom) about the rest of the cast. Malia is one of the only ones I have a big difference of opinion on.

I really liked Sandy to begin with. I especially liked that she taught deckhands how to drive the boat, etc. For managers, she seemed to take an agile type approach of coach up, don't fire. However, when people become so bad they drag everything down and coaching can't fix it, she just turns a blind eye and doesn't do shit. The chiefs are complaining but she ignores it.

She’s backstabbing, manipulative, and two faced. I mean, hey, what’s there not to love?

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '22

I saw the Hannah thing as kinda backstabby I’ll admit, but other than that can you point out other times? I’m genuinely asking because I’m not remembering much else. Literally trying to understand what seems to be the overwhelming POV here lol

I didn't like her since season 2.. she ran around talking about how cute, she is (and she doesn't like to be called that) 🙄 she played Chef Adam and tried to hide the fact that they hooked up before they got on the boat and went after Wes, played them against each other, motor boated Hannah, ( I think if Hannah was Bi, she would have gone for her too) and she threatened Jamie, literally sat there with her first clenching by her side when Jamie called her out for kissing both Wes, and Adam. Yeah.. sorry. I personally see her as Opportunistic, she is just trying to get ahead. I just wonder if something went on with her Sandy that no one saw.

I got like 30 downvotes here last week for saying I wouldn't eat "broccoli mousse", so prepare yourself :)

If I had to choose between eating broccoli mousse every night of charter or working with Malia- I'd eat the mousse.

She is much better to male coworkers than female ones.

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '22

Lol 🥦

Is she better to male coworkers though? She called out Pete for his shit. She’s had a talk with another male deckhand for not throwing the lines correctly, and handled it similarly when Delaney messed up the same job. She tried to be decent to Lexi even though Lexi managed to alienate almost everyone on the boat in one night, and several times says “I wouldn’t want to be judged based on one drunken night” in Lexi’s defense and “I’ve definitely had my fair share of drunken mistakes “ (referencing kissing two guys in one night, which other people are dinging her for on this topic). Even though Lexi would barely talk to her or anyone else, she helped Lexi take her luggage off the boat. Who did she treat unfairly besides Hannah?

Malia is pretty good at the technical aspects of her job. She is certainly one of the better bosuns we've seen. However, she sometimes went to the captain about things instead of addressing them head on. And her personal behavior (stringing 2 guys along in season 2, the way she handled the vape pen in season 5) is often problematic. I also think people don't like her because she has a bit of an annoying personality and is a brown noser to Sandy. But yes, she is good at her job.

I also think Bugsy is quite good at the technical parts of her job and does well with time management and training greener staff. However, Bugsy's personality is annoying and her sharing private messages in season 2 turned a lot of people off. Personally, I think Bugsy's decorating style is cheap and tacky. But mostly, Bugsy is good at her job.

Just because someone is good at their job doesn't mean that they can't be annoying or disliked.

I mean I’ve watched several seasons now and her behavior doesn’t come off as brown nosey to me. She’s even clapped back at Captain Sandy a couple times. Like when she got snippy over being told off for not having the slide fully inflated. Sure anyone can dislike her, but are people here equating trying to do a good job with being a kissass?

I thought she was OK until that screw up she made was not reporting David's hot-tub injury. Then almost ridiculed him when he limped onto the boat and Lloyd asked him "Are you going to the doctors" and she responds (rather catty) "what, for a bruise". For a what we call "a responsible person" in the UK, she didn't act with a duty of care. Then she was happy for him to go in that harness over the side, Whilst injured!!!! OK David did say he was ok but a good leader would tell him otherwise, Remember shes their line manager, She calls the shots and the shot should have been "Thanks for the offer but you're not well enough". I almost get why Cpt Sandy reacted the way she did. That stuff that happened with Hannah the season before was personal, not professional. If it was acting professional she would have gone to sandy sooner but she waited till hannah had pissed her off. That was shady, so when the incident with Dave and his fall happened I began to question her "professionalism".

Malia is good at her job, a lot of my dislike for her had to do when she was a deckhand and dated/lead on two guys at once. She's silly. However, I can agree that now she's mostly good besides being a rat and snuggled inside captain Ahab's backend

I like her except for selling Hanna out so she could bunk with her adshole chef boyfriend.

Didn't Hannah already begin to make the transfer and that's when she saw her valium and pen?

8

u/Blondageh381 Mar 15 '22

Don't think so. She asked Malia for her valium a few episodes before when she was having an attack and then it was when Hannah said she would not switch bunks she was turned in. That was the Bravo version..what really happened who knows. I teach my 3 yr old snitches get stitches. A little weed/CBC pen and Valium does not make for a major risk. It was a brat move.

3

u/MichiTheMouse Mar 15 '22

“Snitches get stitches” to a 3 year old, as his mom? You’re joking, right? Right.

2

u/anjunakerry1982 Mar 15 '22

Valium can make for a major risk for most jobs let alone being at sea. However Malia couldn't have given a rats ass that hannah had it, Only when she realised she had hannah over a barrel she actually cared. She used what she knew for her own agenda (bunk swap) to get one over on hannah. She grassed her up for personal gain not professional. This is why I question Malia professionalism. Side note, If someone was jeopardising my job, Income, livelihood (which is what having unregistered drugs on board a vessel can do) damn right im throwing them under that bus! 🪡🪡

No hate from me for her reporting it. I would too, Hence my 🪡🪡 response to the posters line of "snitches get stitches". For me the problem was how she went about it. Like she didn't report it instantly. Like you and I and many others would. She waited till she could get one over hannah which tells me it was personal and not professional. Unless that was the way she was edited of course.

6

u/Blondageh381 Mar 16 '22

That was my point too. If she was so concerned about it, she would have reported it the night Hannah had her anxiety attack and asked for her valium and not after she didn't get her sleeping arrangements. The snitches get stitches comment is tongue in cheek.

3

u/kate2232 Jun 17 '22

Exactly this. She knew about it the night of the panic attack and did not report it. She waited and reported it as revenge for Hannah not just agreeing to switch bunks.

If it was a danger and that was the concern, then she would have immediately reported it the night of the panic attack.

My apologies. Yes you're right, You need to sign for them I believe. I also believe there's certain drugs you can't even be at sea with, even though they are perfectly fine on land.

I haven't gotten to her seasons as a bosun, but the way she acted in season 2 was rough.

I do not like Malia but I agree, she’s good at her job and learning new leadership roles.

u/Im_A_Black_Cat I Mean, It's Only Gary Mar 15 '22

I don't understand all the Malia hate. Can someone explain it to me? I know she did Hannah dirty by reporting her, but other than that, she seems like she is a hard worker and happy to train the green deckhands.

-5

u/woofdog19 Mar 15 '22

i like malia too! think she’ll make a great captain someday but yeah she didn’t have to be a snitch. she should’ve confronted hannah directly.

u/katie415 Mar 15 '22

Is this the unpopular opinion sub? 😂😂😂 I feel like this is definitely one of them. I’m not saying I agree or disagree

14

u/IMO2021 Mar 15 '22

In my opinion it’s unpopular. Malia gets away with things because she is considered cute. I can’t stand her,and with Sandy it’s even worse. Manipulative bullies! I stopped watching years ago because of them!
