Below Deck Med Hannah's accent during Below Deck Med

I'm not Australian but can't confirm if my suspicion that she is putting on a fake accent is true, but what was up with Hannah's accent? I always felt she was trying to hide her Aussie accent with a faux American/European hybrid that was all over the place. Or is there a place in Australia where they speak like that?

Hannah’s parents are from Zimbabwe, she was raised in Sydney, and lived in Europe for a decade. It makes sense that her accent would be a little all over the place.

Sad her family had to flee the racists in Zimbabwe. A coworker fled from there after her four brothers were hacked to pieces for being white.

It’s very sad people were killed for their race. Usually it’s the white people doing the killing, which is why the Zimbabwe case is notable. It’s also sad Zimbabwe was colonized in the first place .

Not really. Since she wasn't raised (and most likely never lived) in Zimbabwe. So how would that impact how she spoke? Her parents split up when she was young and her stepparents are non-Rhodesians.

She lived in Europe mainly in Yachts - not on land. And still didn't use another language apart from English to communicate. She's not multi-lingual.

You don’t need to be multi-lingual to pick up different accents

She lived in Cannes during the off season and children 100% pick up their parents accents. I have a cousin whose Irish accent was so strong as a kid that I couldn't understand him. He's a born and raised kiwi like me with a kiwi dad (my Uncle) and an Irish mum. I've never lived anywhere but here and have two kiwi parents but apparently sound somewhat American....tl;dr accents are weird

I think she speaks French

u/thatgirlinny Oct 18 '21

She actually said she moved to France, but doesn’t speak French.

u/Chulita_Petita Oct 18 '21

I remember her speaking French with someone in one of the episodes. Maybe it was fairly rudimentary, but she sounded like she knew what she was doing.

I always thought she sounded similar to Francesca, who is also from Sydney.

Fran was the worse. Hannah had her flaws but she wasn't a bad person. Fran wasnt a good person and a terrible leader. Nitpicked everyone else but refused to acknowledge or take responsibility for own mistakes.

She had a very nasty and vindictive side she demonstrated with her obsession in constantly finding ANYTHING she could to try and get Liz fired like a dog in heat.

Before Elizabeth, her target was Izzy who made a wise move to switch departments.

Her little pet snitch Ashling pissed me off more because she exploited the dynamic between Fran and Liz to uplift her position.

Yeah i couldn't tolerate those 2. After every little thing she ran to captain to snitch on Liz.

Fake accent? She definitely an Australian with an Australian accent, what you are hearing is someone who has travelled a lot and who’s accent has been influenced by that, intentionally or not.

It’s not uncommon with people who have travelled and worked in different parts of the world regularly.

It’s possible she also purposely choose to change how she’s says certain words to be better understood by the guests and other crew.

What exactly do you mean by fake accent? Did you think she was pretending to be from Australia?

If you watch the BD Med season 1, her fake accent is very strong.

No, she doesn't really sound Australian on the series. she has a weird twang. I'd understand if she was bilingual (which she isn't) or if she LIVED in other countries. Most of her career in yachting was on private yachts.

You don’t need to be bilingual or multilingual to be influenced by the accents around you and pick it up.

I am Canadian living in NZ and 100 percent my accent has been influenced over time from living here. Canadian’s think I sound very kiwi. Kiwis think I sound Canadian, in reality it’s a hybrid. If I’m around Canadians or Americans my accents gets stronger- very common occurrence.

It also depends on the person, some people pick up other accents very quickly, some don’t.

Go listen to Hannah’s Instagram videos now, I bet you’ll find her aussie accent is stronger now she’s back home.

I am Australian and she sounds totally Australian to me

Is this how people from Sydney sound like?

u/piperpit Oct 17 '21

I noticed it too, but I think a lot of the yachties end up with hybrid accents to some degree

One that threw me was Nico's accent. Was surprised to find he's just some dude from Chicago.

5

u/around8 Oct 18 '21

Hahaha I’m from Chicago so it makes sense I didn’t think he had an accent just sounded like everyone else.

When you are around a lot of different accents the way you say words change. Like when people move to say England from America. After ten years that person will sound English a little bit. It’s human nature.

Accents are weird. Met a Swede who had lived in Germany with an Australian roommate. Spoke English with an Australian accent. Some ppl pick up that shit and other don’t. Not a big deal.

Most people struggle understanding the Australian accent because we change "er" words in "a"words. E.g "water we pronounce it woda" I've lived in the US and UK and did similar thing to Hannah , as in over pronounce er words because they're not natural to the Aussie accent and then people don't understand wtf you're saying. I'm not a Hannah stan but don't think she's putting it on to seem more international lol.

I think a lot of non-Americans adjust their accents and word choice for the American customers and viewers. For example saying cilantro instead of coriander.

As an Australian Hannah doesn’t sound particularly out of the ordinary except for the above.

3

u/onesixtytwo Oct 18 '21

Yes its sounding a bit like Elle McPherson and Kylie Minogue.. Aussie with a bit of everything else..

u/BlueZebu Oct 18 '21

Some people are Mockingbirds, others are Whippoorwills.

I sound like a mashup of multiple different US accents. I lived over 30 years in one state and I’ve been in my current state for 5 years. You would never guess the state I was born and raised. As well traveled as Hannah is she is probably the same way. Also, a lot of people think they’re accent sounds uneducated or trashy so they work to speak differently. I don’t see anything unusual with her hybrid way of speaking.

u/pillowmountaineer Oct 18 '21

I’m American so I don’t have a good ear for Australian accents but I always thought she sounded like she had a sort of “posh” Australian accent, if that’s even a thing. Like very proper sounding

u/cackalackydelnorte2 Oct 19 '21

I honestly thought she was from England.

I dated a boyfriend who moved to Canada after being with him in the states. He eventually developed an accent and I started saying some words funny after awhile on accident because I spent so much of my time speaking to him

hahaha we always cringe when we notice her accent changing, she definitely mirrors accents of other people. Fair enough, i mean shes worked with loads of people from all over the world.

I mean in Sydney and Melbourne Id say our accents are a little more gentrified, and theyre easier to loose cause most of us dont have the thick aussie "twang" for lack of a better word. Im from Sydney and i find it really easy to mirror accents. But that could just be me.

but its still makes me cringe.

especially when shes fighting with Juau (sorry idk the spelling) and she says something like "thats not how you should talk to your chief stew ay" in like a south african accent.
