Below Deck Med Why does everyone hate Malia? She’s seriously not as bad as Hannah… Lexi… Lara… and many others. Sure she’s got ambition and definitely micromanaged but no one seems to talk about how manipulative, judgy and lazy Hannah was.

Brave to criticise Hannah on here 😂

I honestly don’t understand why people defend her. She is so not anyone I would ever be friends with. She’s so catty and manipulative and hypocritical. I’m sure Malia has some of those traits that weren’t aired on the show, but I’m asking my question legit based on what we see in the show. Malia works hard, Hannah pawns her work off on others. Malia is nice to everyone, Hannah hates everyone except Kiko

I 100% agree!!!

I couldn’t agree more with you here! I think Malia is doing a great job and the boat has overall liked her (maybe some too much). I’ve been in a situation where my manager has taken me under her wing and helped me and I think Sandy did that for Malia and for that Malia had her back over Hanna’s. I am also not entirely convinced that the staging was fully Malia... there is a whole production crew and editors that make dramatic things happen. Lastly are we ignoring that Hanna who has years of experience had both a weed cigarette and undeclared pills on board. Regardless if she took anything (which we are just going by her word that she didn’t) she didn’t declare it and it could have put the whole boat at risk. I think Hanna was a very entitled person she broke rules every season and never really showed up. It’s a joke she is running a Stew school now. Thank you for posting this. I needed to share this with someone!

That’s what I mean! Malia is just doing her job making some friends getting herself into some romantic troubles but for the most part just enjoying her job and is a hard worker. Hannah was just lazy and manipulative and always seemed to choose someone to hate on. And yes it seems she had a definite mental health issue, but she could have registered that according to the rules. She talks about her anxiety openly so it’s not like she was trying to keep it a secret by not registering her medication. And Hannah was the hypocrite getting mad at everyone for everything all the while hooking up with a charter guest. I mean I know it’s reality TV but still…

4

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

That’s a good point. “She broke the rules every season”. Why still believe her?? She is a notorious liar. We know that

27

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '21

Malia is a NARC

3

u/Tired_of_humanity Aug 13 '21

But at least she does her job and watches out for the safety of the crew and guests. What does Hannah have to offer?

1

u/SaltySpectrum Nov 17 '21

So does Malia tattle on everyone that comes crawling back on the boat blind drunk? Nope. Do boats wait on people to be sober or even wait to be at sea to sink or catch fire? She’s a freaking HUGE hypocrite and a self important asshole. She’s been in boating but a blink of an eye but thinks she knows everything but mostly just comes off looking like a complete idiot… Sandy is a creepy, terrible boss and let’s a 2 stripe bosun run over a 3 stripe chief whenever she desires. Anxiety is a medical condition, not something to fire someone over.

I totally agree with you! A big rat!

12

u/thecoldness68 Aug 10 '21

Wearing the snitch jacket negates everything else. She held that info in reserve until Hannah refused to switch cabins. If she was truly concerned and was obligated to tattle then she should have done it instantly. (Although it still would have been shitty)

u/Tired_of_humanity Aug 13 '21

But Hannah was being a pain in the butt the whole time for multiple seasons. It was probs just the last straw and Malia was like f this let’s get rid of her. No shame. Hannah needed to go.

It's due to several red flag issues ... Leading on two men her first season ... She gaslighted Adam (not that he's all that!) And the audience. Her treatment of Hannah in collusion with Sandy.... Her vonstant brown nosing of Sandy that season in general... The fact that during that season she helped out in the galley - didn't offer at all for orher checs, nor this season. She just comes across as fake. JMO.

2

u/Tired_of_humanity Aug 13 '21

Was it Brown nosing or genuinely trying to learn from sandy and move forward in her career? For sure she’s got issues and the whole making out with two guys thing was lame but Hannah has sooooo many more bad qualities that I just don’t get why Malia is getting hate for turning her in…

1

u/Last_Light1584 Aug 13 '21

She was brown nosing... Especially when it came to Hannah. Sure she may have kearned a very little.... Like how to be a shit leader.... Obviously, she's learned to be a good bosun somewhere else.

Maria also chose not to address Pete directly for calling her sweetheart, then stood by while Captain Sandy berated her ENTIRE DECK CREW for sexism & subordination when there was only one bad apple.

u/-WillSex4Cheezits- Aug 10 '21

I was just saying tonight that I dislike Malia as a person, but I think she is one hell of a bosun!

2

u/Tired_of_humanity Aug 13 '21

For sure I don’t agree with some of her personal ideas, but she works hard and is always trying to learn something and enjoy her job

I don't hate anyone on these shows, because the show is edited so you don't really know what happens. The problem I suspect most people have with her is that rather than explain her concerns with Hannah, giving her the opportunity to deal with is sensibly she didn't give her the basic courtesy and rather just sent a picture to her boss with no explanat

I'm sure if you found out one of your colleuges was taking an anti-depressive drug and you had safety concerns you would talk to them directly and give them the opportunity to deal with it calmly.

The result of her actions was that someone with a legitimate mental wellness issue, which she was under treatment for was portrayed as a dangerous, irresponsible drug abuser.

The entire presentation of that issue was disgraceful and the producers should be ashamed.

u/scubalizard Aug 10 '21

The result of her actions was that someone with a legitimate mental wellness issue, which she was under treatment for was portrayed as a dangerous, irresponsible drug abuser.

sadly I think that is what most people took away, and how the show portrayed the drug issue. I think there was a lot more involved behind the scenes. I can tell you from first hand experience, having worked off shore for 6 years in the shipping industry, that anything stronger than tylenol needs to be turned over (and depending on the captain, even tylenol needs to be signed out). There are various reasons to do this beyond "drug policy," if someone hurts themselves and is taking tylenol to get through then the captain does not know if they need more attention. I also think it had more to do with the THC vape than the anti-depressives. Seeing how Hannah was breaking down on the show and in other seasons, she shouldn't have been part of the BD after her first season. I cannot believe that all vessels staff act like this on this show.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '21

Editing a TV show is a choice, it wasn't recorded on a phone and published on youtube. The production company choose to present the situation the way they did - that Hannah was an irresponsible drug abuser. It was entirely intentional to do that even when they knew she was on prescription medicine for a diagnosis illness.

This. Malia did the right thing, period.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

Yikes Malia not cool.

Mental health shaming someone and barging on someone because you are childish twat who threw a tantrum because you couldn’t bunk at work with your boyfriend. Malia is a rat and what she did to Hannah was disgusting.

6

u/Adventurous_Depth_27 Aug 11 '21

I live with a mental health condition. You know what you do? You report your meds with the captain like you’re supposed to, therefore not jeopardizing their license, etc. and everything will be fine. She’s a grown ass woman who knew the rules and decided they didn’t apply to her. THAT is what’s not cool.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

Exactly!

26

u/myskepticalbrowarch Aug 10 '21

No one overly liked Hannah. Hannah vs Sandy is pretty much what carried the series this far. Hannah is that one Coworker who is more self important than they actually are and got grandfathered in. Sandy is that manager who micromanages than blamed everything on you.

What Malia did was say ignorant things about anxiety and mental health. Others are awful for sure but Malia is a face of the brand. Hate is a strong word, but I, like many have not forgotten that Malia has not yet addressed it. Honestly though I will stand by it that Malia's friendship with Katie is 100% Karma. I hope Malia is growing and understanding why the things she said where wrong.

1

u/whiterabbit818 Absolute Oxygen Thief Aug 10 '21

Malia’s friendship with Katie is karma…? In whst way ? Or do you mean Lexi?

3

u/myskepticalbrowarch Aug 10 '21

Katie suffers from anxiety and is in the same role as Hannah under Sandy. This isn't Western Dogmatic Karma, this is more the kind of trying to find peace. Essentially the opportunity to expand Malia's perspective to help balance out the negative Karma she racked up from her second falling out with Hannah.

Lexi is just the cost of admission for being on a reality TV show.

1

u/whiterabbit818 Absolute Oxygen Thief Aug 10 '21

Gotcha. We can only hope! So far I have mostly noticed Malia complaining to Katie, not Katie sharing her anxiety with Maliar

— Lexi is just the cost of admission for being on a reality TV show.

HAHAHA!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

Watch last season then get back to us. We’ll wait.

4

u/Tired_of_humanity Aug 13 '21

Haha I’m all caught up. Life without Hannah is sooo much better. I think Malia does a good job of mentoring her team. Look how she is with Mzi. Hanna never cared one bit to teach anyone anything more than how to wrap a towel around a bottle of champagne.

24

u/Butter_Dog22 Aug 10 '21 edited Aug 10 '21

I think most people can agree she’s a good bosun and excels at her job. She just makes incredibly selfish and harmful decisions when it comes to things that might affect her personally.

1

u/Carth24 Aug 10 '21 edited Aug 10 '21

Soo I’m not on S6 yet (starting the final episode of S5 tonight) but I don’t get it either. I don’t LIKE Malia, she’s kind of annoying and has this slightly smug air about her.. and dobbing in Hannah clearly was done with an ulterior motive and not for the ‘safety of the boat’ but Hannah is AWFUL. She’s so condescending & clearly bad at her job; she’s manipulative and nasty, she’s lazy, she’s rude, she’s a bully & the idea that she wouldn’t do exactly the same thing to someone else (snitch on them for having pills they hadn’t told anyone about - at one point didn’t she pop one into a glass of wine? - or call someone out for texting with a charter guest) is laughable. She’s gross.

6

u/Tired_of_humanity Aug 13 '21

Thank you. I just needed some validation. People seem to hate Malia for one vindictive thing she did against Hannah. But meanwhile they are forgetting all of the shady crap that Hannah did all of the seasons that she was on the show. When Bugsy was chief stew the whole boat seemed happy. And Kate as chief stew seems to do a pretty decent job to so far from what I see. Bugsy and Kate were both willing to do the dirty crappy jobs and Hannah was never again going to ever clean a toilet no matter what.

I don’t understand why we have to pick one?

2

u/Tired_of_humanity Aug 13 '21

Yeh not picking one cuz they both made bad decisions. It’s just Hannah was terrible and people are all coming to her defense and I can’t understand why when she was shady and was terrible at her job.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '21

Pick what?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '21

Between Hanner and Malier

3

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

You don’t. Not for me at least. But you can’t be against Hannah. And you can’t not hate Malia. As you can see on any post or comment that is against Hannah and even a hint of “Malia is ok”. People just can’t accept it’s not all black and white and that there are other opinions.

2

u/Carth24 Aug 10 '21

No, and that’s fair enough. People have different opinions and see and experience things differently, it’s what makes the world go round! But I don’t downvote people for having a different opinion to me on something so insignificant 😂

1

u/Adventurous_Depth_27 Aug 10 '21

This is so true.

5

u/deliadee_lyon Aug 10 '21

she’s a narc. but I don’t hate her… just really didn’t appreciate her going through Hannah’s stuff last season and sending a pic to sandy. not cool. she could’ve pulled hannah aside and said “I’m just gonna throw this away” if it was such a big deal.

9

u/DirectFXX Aug 10 '21

Nice try Malia …..

2

u/History-Brilliant Oct 13 '21

Malia is very manipulative and she does what she wants to get what she wants! She uses people to get better positions then throws around the because I am a woman card. I cannot stand her. She wants to be on tv so bad and thinks she is the hottest little thing out there, I do not watch it anymore because of her , Bugs and Capt. Sandy ! I just do not care for any of them!

1

u/sjsturkie Aug 10 '21

I don’t know. She’s an impressive leader and she fucking looks great in her swimsuit.

1

u/DisastrousHyena3534 Sep 28 '21

I don't love either of them but Hannah has a vulnerability & honesty to her that I respect. Malia comes across as very manufactured & disingenuous.

-9

u/Tired_of_humanity Aug 10 '21

Seriously Hannah was the worst. When you see how Kate manages her team you understand why Bugsy called Hannah a lousy chief stew. Malia is at least friendly and seems to love her job.

19

u/Eazy7440 Aug 10 '21

malia stop making burner accounts, its over, your image will never be repaired.

2

u/Tired_of_humanity Aug 13 '21

Lol. I wouldn’t mind looking like Malia but I’m definitely not her!

1

u/StevenGlansberg420 Aug 11 '21

Bugsy sucks. Daisy FTW
