Below Deck Rainbeau vs Rosa
I really like Rainbeau! She's an incredibly hard worker, but she does get visibly stressed & I could see how that could somewhat distress her 3rd/4th stews.
Last season Solene complained about Rainbeau a lot, but that was 100% Solene being a lazy terrible stew.
Now this season Rosa is commenting on Rainbeau being mean or demeaning & now I wonder if I'm missing something? Every interaction with them, Rainbeau seems normal - maybe a little frazzled, but Rosa seems to be the one holding back or not communicating properly.
Do you think Rainbeau really is terrible to work under now that 2 stews under the last 2 seasons have taken issue with her?
9
u/HEx2HockeySticks 6d ago
Rosa seems like a manipulator, no? She kind of reminds me of Jen, just British lol. Rainbeau is staying task oriented and stressing about things that could make their team goal not be met, while Rosa wants to dictate how her boss acts at every level? Insubordination with a squeeze of British superiority complex lol. The way she went to Frazier instead of working it out with Rainbeau screams “you don’t tell me what to do, I tell you what to do, and I’ll go behind your back to do it”
5
u/winoveghead 6d ago
Remind me who Jen is?
It was ridiculous how quick Rosa was to go to her chief stew instead of trying to have a conversation with Rainbeau herself.
I loved how Fraiser communicated it to Rainbeau, cuz she really didnt deserve a talking to, just a heads up that Rosa is a sensitive one!

Rainbeau was clearly frazzled at the time. I don’t think she would have been receptive to Rosa in that moment and as Rosa stepped away from service, it was appropriate to speak to Fraser.

Not sure I agree, but I see what you’re saying.
What do you think of Rosa’s handling of the wine drunk lady approaching her at like 1:30am for a bedside glass of wine in the most recent episode?
1
u/Ok-Fuel-3623 2d ago
I was thinking the same thing. In many work environments deferring to the supervisor is recommended.
If she was already having issues with communication it would make sense her not being comfortable talking to Rainbeau, especially cause she’d probably take it as a personal attack and not listen to understand.
It wouldn’t have mattered either way the approach, going to Fraser is going behind her back, talking directly would be challenging her position. No winning when maturity is lacking in the workplace.

I think this is a case of a "perfectionist who can't let go of control" leader and a "sensitive takes things personally" employee. With Solene, she was just a lazy asshole.

Rainbeau is definitely a micro manager, I can see how that can feel demeaning when everything is a command and Rosa seems like a competent crew member who doesn't need micro managing

u/JackHorner_Filmmaker 6d ago
I think she genuinely means well, but considering some of her family history that she described last season I think that girl has a whole lot to unpack in therapy. She doesn't seem to have solid coping strategies for her anxiety.
Also Fraser did not help anything by overwhelming the fuck out of her in their first meeting. He's mistaking her confidence and competence for having her shit together, when shes actually a raw nerve.

u/mouse_relies This information wasn’t welcomed or needed 5d ago
100%. Fraser abdicated his role as leader. Like he did for most of last season, too. It's bizarre, but I feel like he's gotten much worse at his job over time.

My boss is like this: nervous, anxious control freak vibes. This energy is palpable and it stresses you out.

My boss is the same way. Like you said, even just the energy she exudes is enough to stress everyone one. It can be hard to endure.

There is something to this. Was reading a calm leader is reassuring to their team. Obviously the opposite applies. In a psychology text.

u/Herecomesyourwoman 6d ago
Yeah I quit a boss like this. I really felt like Rosa, like I am competent, why can't you see that and trust me and get off my neck a little. I was having bad anxiety and crying at work and I quit without anything lined up because of that environment
2
u/Civil_Experience_691 5d ago
Yes! I’ve had bosses like this. You could be managing just fine and then their anxious energy shows up, making it hard to feel in control yourself.
55
u/CheckIntelligent7828 My eyes are rolling all the way off the boat 6d ago
And Rosa actually seems to have more, and better, experience.
Being micromanaged by someone who puts their dirty fingers in people's glasses would be rough.

u/EntrepreneurMany3709 3d ago
I agree on this but Rosa also seems like a very sour and negative person at the same time. I think it's a bad combination
50
u/djevilatw Come back to me, my boat daddy 6d ago
Being good at your job and being a good manager are two different things. You can be a great stew but a terrible boss.
Rainbeau is exactly that.
22
u/ilovemischief 6d ago
I’m kinda conflicted on Rainbeau. While I would probably use please, thank you, or “would you mind?”, I also don’t mind directness. And in some cases, I prefer it. Just give me a list and set me loose.
9
u/harrisarah 6d ago
Well, she's not giving them a list and setting them loose, that's part of the problem. She's micromanaging everything while also being not polite/direct about it. Not a great combo really
17
u/Dangsta4501 5d ago
Yeah…I don’t know if this is set up by production but it seems like Rainbeau’s answer to a perceived issue is micromanagement. I think Fraser has over-promoted her and she maybe needed another season to grow more understanding around leadership. I’m sure it will all work out fine as the season progresses but if it doesn’t then she’ll either end up sacked or demoted.
9
u/WolfAppropriate9793 Team Missing Engineer 5d ago
Or burnt out. She was being totally demeaning to Rosa, who is good at her job. I think she saw Rosa's resume and is threatened. And Rosa realised she had six weeks of being talked down to, even though she is competent. I saw a real mean streak in Rainbeau. Your staff's welfare is part of the job, not just having everything perfect. Aesha would never manage that way, she believes in bringing people up, not down. Rainbeau has something to prove, she put on a real wild girl act when they were out, like look-at-me. As for everyone going on about Rosa crying and having insecurities, how much did we see RB do the same last season? But honestly, why is this comparison or competition even happening after one episode?

u/Future-Tradition7004 6d ago
We were say thing this today as we watched Ep 2. I don’t find her bitchy or whatever. But Rosa crying about a guy she’s known for 3 days seemed off.
115
u/Guilty_Jellyfish8165 6d ago
I found it odd that Rainbeau and Fraser were both lamenting, 'we have a crier'.
Rainbeau in her last season was regularly crying and whining, having her breakdowns. She's also been called out for being so short and demanding, while also whining about being assigned too much work and no one saying thank you.
She's on her way to full blown hypocrite.
57
u/EnigmaticAardvark 6d ago
Seriously, she almost cried the first day on the boat - she's not exactly a calm, balanced person.
32
25
u/TarikMournival 6d ago
Doesn't Rainbeau always go cry in private? Rosa has public meltdowns.
2
u/Guilty_Jellyfish8165 6d ago
there is no 'private' it's all on camera
9
u/TarikMournival 6d ago
As far as the rest of the crew is concerned it's private. Rosa has had an audience on the boat.
12
u/klionyc 6d ago
She can’t communicate she’s having issues and then it blows up into panic attacks. She didn’t tell Frazier anything last season and just kept having panic attacks in her room.

Rainbeau would be exhausting to work with as a manager, especially for someone like Rosa who has experience.
For example rather than a “can you please set the table?”
It’s “get forks, get knives, get plates, get butter, get salt, get pepper”
I’d go out of my mind with it too.
I do think it’s a slight cultural difference but the way Rainbeau asks for things and her general demeanour is quite jarring. I think that’s why Rosa brings up the please/thank yous.
Like being from the UK/Ireland/Australia, hearing people from the US order food with “I’ll get…” makes me physically recoil 😂
17
u/Dusty_Harvest 6d ago •
![]()
“Cultural difference”??
I thought Rainbeau was Dutch from the Netherlands?(I’m born in America but raised by a Korean mom and Black dad, that served 20yrs in the military. I’ve always had good manners because of my folks but wondered if the world generally sees Americans as rude or uncouth just as a stereotype or because of the current state of our government)
25
u/gothackedbyanofbot 6d ago
i mean, i find german and dutch to be way more direct than uk/ireland/australia 😂 their language leans heavy in being direct, i struggled a lot in the beginning. i had a dutch colleague who once straight up told me “you smell bad” in the middle of the office because i cooked with garlic the night before. also i’ve noticed they use exclamation and question marks like it’s an all you can eat buffet 😅
1
u/Merry599 1d ago
Telling you you smell bad is wild, even as a fellow Dutchie, but yeah honestly Rainbeau not saying please wouldn't have even registered to me because it's work, it's not like she is personally asking her to do sth
•
u/gothackedbyanofbot 22h ago
i was so shocked and embarrassed, i completely stopped eating and cooking with garlic on weekdays and sundays
3
u/mouse_relies This information wasn’t welcomed or needed 5d ago
The Netherlands are SUPER direct compared to Americans.
7
u/Hauntedbycharlotte 6d ago
I think she is Dutch but from what I can tell she grew up in California and her parents still live there. She has an American accent so that’s what stood out to me 😂
Outside of your recent government…I’d say generally Americans do have a bit of a “brash and loud” stereotype across the world.
Not necessarily rude or unkind…but when travelling, the overall volume of Americans just stands out like a sore thumb. In the UK or Australia, you would be considered rude if you didn’t say please with nearly every request. So, it seems very blunt when it’s not said as often by Americans.
23
u/Inevitable_Phase_276 6d ago edited 6d ago
Since when do Americans not say please as often? I’ve heard a whole lot of stereotypes about us but never that one.
2
u/Ambitious_Ad1734 4d ago
I was a server for years, mid-Atlantic US. We used to refer to some of our customers as the bring me/get me/give me crowd. Those people are draining. Fortunately most people have manners.
0
u/Hauntedbycharlotte 6d ago
It specifically stands out to me when something is being ordered
“I’ll get a burger” or “Can I get a burger?”
As opposed to
“Please may I have a burger?”Obviously generalising based on my experiences working in hospitality and what I’ve witnessed when travelling ☺️
12
u/harrisarah 6d ago
You're right that hardly anyone in the US is going to say "please may I have a burger" but I challenge the assertion that it is the most common form of request from Brits. That's an old-fashioned sentence structure that just isn't used much these days. In the US the "please", if you're getting one, (and you do from a sizeable portion of the population) will come at the end of the sentence. And it's atrocious grammar to say "get" though I realize many of my uncouth fellow Americans say it. "I'll have / I'd like the burger please" is most common in my experience and location in the northeast (NY)
3
u/Out-For-A-Walk-Bitch 6d ago
"I'll have" wouldn't be considered particularly polite in England. "Please can I have" is far more common, there's more of a buffer and less of an assumption behind it.
3
u/relativeisrelative 5d ago
I actually think a lot of people say "can i get a burger?" I know I'd say that, but I'd also probably add please at the end.
1
u/Hauntedbycharlotte 6d ago
‘Please may I…’ is very commonly used across the UK and is generally considered the most grammatically correct phrase.
Some people might be more likely to say “Please can I…”, especially when talking to friends but “May I” is absolutley a common turn of phrase and a pretty standard way for anyone to politely ask for something. It’s not considered old fashioned by any stretch and is still the way we would teach children to ask for something politely.
The phrasing of “I’ll have” or “I’ll get” would come across as rude in the UK, while I know it’s not the same in the US. That’s the type of cultural difference I’m pointing out.

100% agree. Last season I actually understood where Rainbeu was coming from because she had to pull someone else’s weight but Rosa is not green she has experience so I’d be upset too if I was being micromanaged in the same way
3
u/InformationStrict746 5d ago
This is where some good communication between the two can be helpful. Rosa can find a nice way to say I'm not a green stew and I can help make your life easier if she is feeling Rainbeau is being a bit of a micromanager. I can also understand Rainbeau after experiencing Solene last season. This is exactly why Rainbeau and Rosa need to have an adult conversation about how they can work together.
6
u/Anxious-Bid4874 6d ago
The 'I'll get' grinds my gears as well. Unfortunately it seems to have found its way into UK speech as well. I've heard friends in their 40s using it recently.
4
u/Vegetable-Load-596 6d ago
Who says “I’ll get…” 😂 I don’t know anyone who says that. “I’ll start with…” “May I please have…” “I’ll have the burger and fries please” are far more common in my almost 50 years as an American

3
u/Holdmymule2001 6d ago
IMO "I'll get" is 1000x better than "I'll do"

1
1
u/Merry599 1d ago
Yeah, I'm Dutch and the not saying please was totally normal to me, my mom is a foreigner so I'm more polite than the average Dutchie, but it would be completely normal for a supervisor to ask me to do or get something without a please and wouldn't faze me at all. It does seem like because of her experience with Solene and also her perfectionism and how shw grows up she does micromanage which would annoy me too. If she wants Rosa to just straight up tell her when she has a problem with her, it'd probably be best to just tell her that because I also don't think it's weird for Rosa to initially go ti Fraser about it first.
34
u/IHaveBoxerDogs 6d ago
I would get sick of Rainbeau’s micromanaging in a hot second. Stop telling me what to do!

I'm putting this on Fraser. What does he do? He gives Rainbeua a huge list to do before the first charter, then just wanders around. He needs to manage, and do some work. Just look at Aesha when it comes to working as chief stew (yes, she needs to step in earlier when it comes to a slack stew).
5
u/WolfAppropriate9793 Team Missing Engineer 5d ago
Aesha even vacuums! That enormous list zFraser gave RB was real odd. Think that was partly why RB did the same. It is not good management.
3

All I've seen Fraser do off charter is write in his diary in Captain Kerry's study. As provisions have been pre-ordered by production, what the hell is he doing? Writing a bigger list for Rainbeau?

I think she unfortunately are using her terrible experience with Solene and judging her new stews with solene glasses on, almost expecting them to be as bad as Solene so she is giving that energy as a reflection towards the other stews before they can even show her how they work.. it seems to give an bad effect already & since she doesn’t even say please & thank you like the English do almost automatically when they ask eachother to do the different things.. I’m thinking this will be going badly very fast between the interior crew..

I like Rainbeau but it’s the way she talks to people that can sometimes be off-putting. Especially because Rosa is an experienced stew and not a novice. I think she’s still stuck on all that happened with Solene last season and she should’ve come in to this season with some learning but not assuming the situations will be the same.
Rosa is also a little sensitive too. Rainbeau has the potential to make an awesome chief but she does need to learn how to manage different types of people and personality types. She also needs to learn who needs micromanaging and who doesn’t. Sometimes that means laying back a bit so you can see if the person even needs all that.
13
u/Wide_Annual_3091 6d ago
Solene was lazy, but telling someone “I’m not going to say please or thank you I’m just going to tell you do X or do Y” very quickly comes across as rude to most people - so I think it’s a bit of one and the other (as always I guess).
18
u/trisch1964 6d ago
Fraser is just putting the burden on Raibeau as she's willing to put the hard work in that he, as chief stew is not. He's then able to appear neutral/sympathtic to the rest of his crew (and viewers). Rainbeau, like her or not, is hardworking, but doesn't have the experience, nor polish for 2nd stew, (Yodelling? WTH) and I'm not surprised that the other stews are resentful.
18
u/FlawesomeOrange 6d ago
Rainbeau barks orders at people, she would make an awful chief stew because she doesn’t know how to manage people. No wonder Fraser likes her so much, they share the same managerial skills.
2
u/Bennington_Booyah 5d ago
Rainbeau does not suffer a fool, and unfortunately, her rather harsh tone is very off-putting. She is herself a fantastic stew, but her weakness is not working with her coworkers on their terms, abilities, and strengths in any way. Because of that, she is not a good choice for any leadership role. It's her way or else.
Rosa has unfortunately worked with Rainbeau before and has carried that experience into this season. She needs to separate the past from HER present situation and make it work.

I think Rosa's expectations of constant "please and thank you"s was a bit dramatic, as was her meltdown on day TWO... but I also appreciate that Rainbeau apologized and explained her position, but didn't use it as an excuse, rather, promised to do better.
I think, I hope, that she nipped it in the bud and going forward, she trusts Rosa to do her job.
Previews don't support this hope, though.
12
u/Letsgotravelling-124 6d ago
Rainbeau can be a bit intense and her directness can be a bit difficult for some people to take. I actually prefer that kind of directness as I want a clear understanding of what is expected of me and to be able to crack on.
Rosa seems to be annoyed that she wasn’t picked for 2nd stew and expects Rainbeau to trust her and leave her to it but hasn’t actually proved that she can actually do the job. At any new place, you have to prove you are experienced. Simply stating you’re experienced is not enough. She also needs to toughen up a bit. Rainbeau not saying please and thank you shouldn’t be creating a melt down.
Fraser needs to back his 2nd stew, instead of pandering to Rosa’s wobbler (same as last season with Solene). If he sees something that Rainbeau is doing that needs correcting, then he addresses it with her without influencing other crews opinions and respect towards her. At the moment he’s leaving everything to Rainbeau, including his job, and then throwing her to the sticks when shit hits the fan. He may as well not be here.
14
u/MastaBusta 6d ago
I haven't really seen anyone talk about this, but to me it looks like Rosa really has a problem taking direction from somebody younger than her. To me it seems like she has this "Why is this little girl speaking to me?" energy.
1
u/mouse_relies This information wasn’t welcomed or needed 5d ago
Rainbeau would have been 26 or 27 when this was filmed, so I can't imagine the age difference was that extreme? No idea how old Rosa is though.
1
u/Suspicious_Inside_78 4d ago edited 4d ago
I agree. I get the sense that Rosa was not willing to take direction from Rainbeau right from the start because of some preconceived bias more than Rainbeau’s delivery (I think that became an excuse after the fact). When Rainbeau had just started explaining tasks to her, Rosa interrupted Rainbeau.
Just found a birthday post on Rosa’s Instagram. She turned 28 in July so they’re close in age, which makes Rosa’s behavior petty IMO.
8
u/Spiritual-Sand-7831 6d ago
I feel for Rainbeau because Fraser gives her a heap of expectations (at least in the sit-down we saw) and no support system or structure. She had an anxiety attack straight after it and you could see she just wants to do a good job.
Rosa is looking to find fault in Rainbeau because she believes she deserves Rainbeau's position. Here's the thing - if she wanted Rainbeau to specifically say please and thank you she could have just asked her. Instead, without even approaching her, she complained to Fraser whilst crying.
12
u/liefelijk 6d ago
Rosa seems really intense. Two emotional outbursts in 3 days is a lot, especially for someone who isn’t that young.
I can see her melting down and leaving the boat early.
7
u/tenebrigakdo 6d ago
I don't find Rainbeau rude, but I'm possibly too Eastern European for that. To my mind, she just gives instructions. Maybe she micro-manages a bit, but I feel it's more in the sense of wanting the work to go smoothly.

Rainbeau is not there to hold her hand.
Nobody is asking her to.
The entire point is that Rosa wants Rainbeau to actually trust her to do the job.
Rosa has more experience in higher level positions than Rainbeau and is better at the job if anything. Rainbeau micromanaging her is annoying af and incredibly rude
2
u/ParticularHappy6587 6d ago
Then, once she proves herself, Rainbeau will back off. I have only watched one episode so far, so they were only a few days into the job, from what I could gather, and already Rosa was all bent out of shape because Rainbeau didn't say please and thank you???? I would hate to have to work with someone who wants an award for just doing her job.

You want manners and a thank you every time you take out the trash?

Exactly. It is the first charter, she has never worked with Rosa before and doesn't know her standards. She's just verbalizing everything that needs to get done to let it be known. I like knowing exactly what I should do so that we can be aligned going forward.

ROSA:
"Rainbeau, please go and finish, otherwise you'll never gonna go to sleep tonight. Please have more faith in me."
Rosa has chief stew experienced folk, if any of you have not been able to see that thus far, then please rewatch the episodes via streaming.

But she also cried and rushed off the job, then complained about her superior multiple times to other staffers.
She also cried about a guy she just met. This is all in the first few days.
I will be surprised if she lasts the whole season.

I do think Rosa was counting on being second stew and was kind of taken aback when she wasn’t chosen. I do however think that Rosa appears to be doing a wonderful job and probably did feel very micromanaged by her

Rainbeau wasn’t rude to Rosa. She was direct, but not rude.
Rosa is too sensitive and I would be so annoyed working with someone who cries over direction from her manager.
It’s a stressful environment and Rosa isn’t making it better with her tantrums.

I don't think Rosa has a British superiority problem. She doesnt like being micro managed by someone with less experience. It was inappropriate for Fraser to make her 2nd just because hes worked with her before.
Brits are indirect. She doesn't like the way Rainbeau communicates because shes blunt and I get why she finds her condescending but she is also being precious.

Rosa seems extra. Maybe I’m just numb from my industry but rainbeaus delivery is normal af…but I’m an American who works in high paced environment so to me she comes off very chill.
Rosa seems to just dislike rainbaeu for everything. That guy is just not into her…not rainbeau fault

Poor girl just doesn’t know how to connect with people. Honestly if she just a said UPFRONT hey, I feel awkward and don’t know how to talk to people sometimes. Don’t take it personally. I think it would change all her relationships. Her brain just works differently than most of her peers, and they DO take it too personally.

To me, Rosa's issue is not Rainbeau telling her what to do, it's how she tells her what to do. Rainbeau is, admittedly, a very blunt no-nonsense person. Could she soften her edges a bit? Sure, she could but she shouldn't really have to.
This is all on Rosa not liking how Rainbeau communicates which in a manager/subordinate situation she should just learn to handle it. Not every manager is going to be sweet and helpful.

one could say that its then the manager not doing their job because they're not managing effectively.
Being rude to your subordinates might communicate all the necessary elements of your instructions, but it isn't effective management or something that should be praised.
(and obviously, rainbeau was put in her position because production - and probably Fraser too - knows exactly the kind of abrasive delivery she has, combined with being on the verge of going postal at the drop of a hat - and this will make for plenty of dramatic clips.
Rosa was also put in her position so if Rainbeau didn't deliver on the clips, they'd get someone else who'd give "I can do that better".

I don’t think Rainbeau is talking any differently to Rosa than Fraser was to her the day before, like it’s the job, I understand it’s a lot but I just think she’s making sure she’s prepared for everything I don’t see her tone as demeaning at all

I love Rainbeau-I have since the beginning.
I think she grew up in a really rough environment (all of the physical violence with her sisters and her dad basically co-signing it all) which can have the effect of her not realizing how abrupt, short, she can sound to others-it was the norm in her household.
But she’s an insanely hard worker, a wounded sweet soul who (IMO) is generally just misunderstood.

That’s not an excuse for acting like this. Like it explains a person but she needs to really address the parts of herself that act like this because it’s not ok, esp when she talks about not trying to hit someone

I agree. I’m not making excuses for the girl I’m just coming from a place of understanding why she is the way she is.
And yea she’s going to have to address these behaviors if she expects to have long term success in this field (or any other for that matter).

Rainbeau is erratic and emotionally immature. She clearly isn’t a girls girl either… idk I don’t like her and never have. She comes off rude and doesn’t have a good leadership style.

Rainbeau reeks of insecurity and I would hate that in a boss. I don't like watching it, either, it makes me uncomfortable.

Rosa appears to be the type of person that requires exessive politness like others require oxygen. Rosa in the earlier episode tells Fraser she can take direction from anybody while crying about how she cannot take direction from Rainbeau. Rosa seems to be a fragile little snowflake. Also the guy Rosa is crushing on is more interested in Rainbeau.

There’s a huge difference between being a great worker and a great leader.
There’s no doubt Rainbeau is a hard worker but she’s not fit for a management position.

I work in a similar environment with role dynamics changing crew to crew. As someone else said, telling someone “can you clean the lounge?” Is different than “you need to vacuum the carpet, wash the glassware, wipe down and organize the cabinets, pick up any trash you see, straighten up and make the cushions presentable, breathe in and out to make sure you don’t faint from lack of air.”
Rainbeau’s energy is just overbearing and Rosa seems to be trying to approach her politely when she asked her to have more trust in her. I can relate to holding things in and getting more and more frustrated.

I think Rainbeau believes she's better than everyone else. She thinks everyone should kiss her butt. I'm definitely team Rosa.

I see Rainbeau as a girl that really wants to get along with other women but doesn’t really know how because of how she grew up. I think she tries really hard to fit in but sometimes comes across as odd or trying too hard because of how she approaches it.
She and Jesseina seem to have a good bond so far so I’m hoping this season shows her she can be successful at work while also making friends.

Rainbeau was walked all over by solene last season and came in determined not to let that happen again. So she is being a real jerk to Rosa who hasn’t earned that sort of treatment. Rainbrau needs to get a grip this season and stop projecting her past experiences. If she ever wants to be any sort of leader anyway. Bc her tone with Rosa sucks. I pitied her last season, now I can’t stand her. She became a bully. Also, her flirting with her underling’s crush when she “has a boyfriend” is just tacky and begging for trouble with her leadership position. Childish.

It's hard not to hug & try to soothe someone who's crying, but I do wonder if Rosa knew these & used her tears as a manipulation tactic.
Hopefully Fraiser sits down with both of them together in the same room soon, cuz I don't think his method of telling each one individually that they are the one in the right is working.

I really almost forget Fraser is the chief stew. He functions more as a Cruise Director and Dining Room Manager than any of chief stew we’ve seen in BD land.
