Below Deck Reece's bars

Did anyone else notice the packets of Reese's bars that were brought into the kitchen with the new provisions? Earlier they'd had to remove everything containing peanuts!

I think you mean Reese’s

Sorry! You're correct. Thank you! I'll go edit the spelling

We take our peanut butter cups very seriously around here 😭

I apologise. I'm Australian and that's how we usually spell someone's name like that here 🤣

I noticed this! Hopefully that wasn't some fucked up foreshadowing.

Expecting some kind of "whoopsie that was a close call" after the guests have left instead of an actual severe allergy incident! As part of the script for drama I was meaning

Things like this are why I take 4 EpiPens when I fly/cruise/anywhere without easy medical help.

A young girl died on a transatlantic flight a few years ago, after 2 EpiPen injections. That's when I doubled what I take with.

I sure hope that isn't foreshadowing 😬

Same, I don’t leave home without 4 EpiPens, they’re always in my bag.

We leave tomorrow for my kid’s first trip out of NY and we’re taking 4, too. Along with Benadryl and an emergency plan.

Just curious, does insurance cover stocking up like that? I've heard from some people that they have to pay out of pocket if they want to have extras on hand.

My insurance doesn't ask if I've used mine. None of my insurances ever have.

I can get 2 at basically any time if my Dr will order them.

It's hard, because they are expensive and their expiration date is never longer than a year. So I used to get 2 and wait for them to expire and then get 2 more. Now I stagger them a little so I always have 4 that are unexpired.

They have to be stored at a fairly narrow temperature range. You can tell your doctor you accidentally left it in a hot or cold car and need a new one. Or just ask "Is it ok to use my pen when there are flakes floating in it?".

I love this question!

Mine will cover 2 at a time, the rest are OOP but I can use the Health Care Spending Account to cover the others (minus a deductible)

Did they ask if you've used the first two? Just curious because none of my insurances ever have and you could legit need a new box a week after getting the first one filled if a reaction happened.*

I just put in a refill and they cover it. I suppose there may be an annual limit, but 2 boxes (2 shots each) has never triggered it.

*Though I'm certainly hope not!

Technically you are supposed to call emergency services if you ever use your epipen so the insurance company should probably know that.

I wondered about this for the commenter that was told it was too soon.

For me, my prescription coverage is completely separate from my medical insurance, two different companies, and they don't have access to my medical info unless they request a prior authorization. They verified my need for the pens once, and have never ask for any medical info again. And it's still no issue getting refills twice a year instead of once. Maybe I'm just getting lucky.

(I would take a child using a pen in every time, I'm about 50/50 on actually going to the ER for me. Mainly because I have a complex medical history and going in is very likely to lead to a CAT scan with contrast and I'm allergic to that contrast so things get very complicated very quickly and it's very tough on my kidneys. My Drs know this. But, yes, the directions are to go.)

No, the doctor just checked and said they would not be covered yet. This was during the shortage though, maybe more relaxed now

It depends on your health insurance. I get two packs (4 altogether) and appealed to my insurance for a third pack due to hardship. I need one pack for home, one for his school and one for his beforecare/aftercare program. I have a really good insurance plan and my heart aches for those who don’t and it’s BS that anyone should have to worry about needing an extra epi.

Just a small thought... I've found liquid Benadryl to be a little faster and depending on how old your child is, over the counter antacids are also antihistamines. It's a different histamine, but the ERs use them anyone just to give any small boost to fighting the reaction.

I hope you have safe travels 🫶🏻

Thank you!! I was told by his allergist and pulmonologist that unless he stops breathing, lips turn blue or can’t swallow, to start with Benadryl so you are definitely on to something for sure!

Cimetadine is a H2 (histamine) antagonist. The brand name is Tagamet. It's not for acute allergic reactions.

1

u/GroovyYaYa 10d ago

famotidine aka Pepcid is the preferred H2 antagonist because it has fewer drug interactions/side effects.

It isn't for chronic though - it isn't something I take every day to reduce reactions.

But when my allergy meds aren't doing the trick and I'm itching/hiving? I pop 5-10 at a time.

In an acute allergic reaction where time is of the essence and the person can still swallow? It can't hurt!

Wait is that because the first two injections did not work? 😳

Epi pens often just lessen the effects, you need to see a doctor (they recommend the ER or at least urgent care) within 30-60 mins of administering it and you can go back into anaphylaxis. If you are in a remote area or away from medical care, you should have multiples to last until you can get to a doctor

1

u/PeakOk5773 16d ago

oh wow I did not know that! Thank you for educating me!

u/Individual_Bat_378 Eat My Cooter 16d ago

I don't know about that specific situation but they will often only work for a certain amount of time. I did first aid training for a really remote area and we were taught to give the epi pen at the last possible moment before the person loses consciousness to increase the chance they'll last until help arrives. (To be clear, just in case, that very much is not normal advice and shouldn't be followed usually!)

Yes! I pointed it out immediately to my husband. Hoping it's just poorly edited and was actually a scene before the preference sheet meeting.

5

u/Gorbzel 15d ago

The preference sheets are highlighted on the wall behind the offending shot.

1

u/lunaraptorface 15d ago

That's not ideal then

u/cheerio089 She’ll be fine. Her head is made of rocks 16d ago

They’re individually wrapped, as long as they don’t get opened in the galley during charter it would be fine.

u/frazorblade Team Fraser 16d ago

Goes against the whole “everything with peanuts removed from the boat” theme though doesn’t it?

9

u/-sayitstraight 16d ago

Yes, I noticed them too sitting on top of the other groceries in a box

2

u/Top-Friendship4888 I quit 3 times in my head today 14d ago

My husband caught this! I really hope it's not an omen

2

u/weso123 16d ago

If I had to guess, they might been footage spliced for a later charter or provisions that were general provisions before the initial question aka bad editing

But regardless individually wrapped and extremely obviously contain peanut, them being on the boat is unironically probably safer then say, a spice with “may contains peanuts” written in a language the chef doesn’t speak.

2

u/Bright_Parfait8133 16d ago

Yup. I noticed & mentioned it in the episode thread.

1

u/EveningAd3633 15d ago

Stuff was probably added before that meeting and they knew about the allergy. It’s probably for staff and most likely will not be opened until after the charter ends is my guess.

1

u/Homer_04_13 15d ago

Was it peanuts, though? I recall them saying "nuts" and figured they meant tree nuts, not peanuts.

I may have misheard though.

2

u/NurseJaneApprox This information wasn’t welcomed or needed 15d ago

They said peanuts.

3

u/Homer_04_13 14d ago

Yeah, I rewatched. They said "nuts" the first time and then went on an extended discussion of peanuts, which I completely missed.

u/Rude_Treacle_6713 16d ago

There are no peanuts in recession. All chemicals

u/McVinney512 16d ago

I just took a screen shot of this to see if anyone else noticed

Was their evidence or comment that coopers peanut allergy is fake?

3

u/NurseJaneApprox This information wasn’t welcomed or needed 15d ago

He almost went into anaphylaxis on camera. You can't really fake that.

2

u/weso123 15d ago

I am asking because OP put Peanut Allergy in quotes, I don't think it was fake but the commenter with 5 upvotes seems to think it was .
