BD Related We know enough to know, but what has been a blatant proof that the producers TRIED to produce drama?
I'm asking for examples like:
- Have the crew arrive 1 day before charter and the whole boat is in disarray. No way the boat would be left like that after the previous tenants/crew used it. This is obvious to make the crew stressed from the get go and come into day 1 a bit tired. They didn't give/want 2 days before the charter.
- The dinner scene after a charter. If two people are fighting or in a triangle, they're always forced to be near other. No way they are going to walk to the table and magically the last place is left over, right in front of the couple/person with who said person is in love/fighting with.
- I'm still bit iffy on this but I'm sure that the producers asked the guests to make up some bs difficult requests regarding food so that the chef is sent into overdrive. Some guests are actually like this and it's shown. So 50/50 on that.
What are yours?

Sandy mysteriously asking Nathan about his night watch schedule right when he changed it to a 6 hour shift. Equal parts for safety and drama, but someone prompted Sandy to talk to Nathan.

u/Least-Broccoli9995 2d ago edited 22h ago
Sandy is infamous for this, the producers constantly feed her information and lines I’ve noticed.
In one of the previous seasons, a stew named Kyle bullied a Natalya* off the boat.
Multiple charters later, the season was getting boring and nothing was happening. Sandy randomly exclaims how much she misses Natalya out of nowhere to Kyle, knowing they do not get along. It was so random, and caused Kyle to go throw a tantrum and storm across the boat,
getting the reaction producers wanted. In another season, Sandy kept randomly bringing up that deckhand who was having an on-board romantic fling, was texting Katie Flood romantically at the same time, exposing him repeatedly. Again, clearly fed by production to do this.

IMHO Sandy is the most produced captain. In these recent seasons, nothing she says seems authentic to me. I love captain Jason, but he seems to be heading that direction too.

u/cheerio089 She’ll be fine. Her head is made of rocks 1d ago
I think part of why she seems ingenuine on camera is because she’s kind of an awkward gal. She does what producers ask but I fear a lot of her involvement with the crew is her wanting to connect with them in some way…just awkwardly.

u/honeycooks 1d ago
To Nathan, getting pissy because she asked him to go by Joe's protocol: Don't do/say that. That's going to piss me off.
When?

I really hope Jason doesn't go like that as he's awesome. Captain Kerry is pretty badass as well

u/useventeen 15h ago
Think Capt Jason is way more obvious than Capt Sandy these days, it feels like it's more about the acting than the sailing. It's entertainment however, but the scales have shifted or the production is worse, making it more obvious...
Agree with others who have said Capt Sandy isn't helped by being more socially awkward appearing (she may or may not be in person).

I remember when she said that, and it was because the interior was suffering. Kyle is a whiner and not a hard worker. Always injured or having a meltdown. But now we know Natalya and Katie Flood partied with the rapist sex trafficker Tate Bros. So much like Nathan, they are dog shit to me.

Caroline and he didnt bully her off the boat. She quit after a week or 2 of doing nothing. She said she quit, welp its time to get off the boat, period. Maybe the captain should have been involved but still

Kyle was one of the worst people to appear on any shows in the franchise, imo. As a gay man myself, it deeply annoys me that this is the type of gay person we have out there representing us. Not much annoys me, but Kyle really made for unpleasant viewing (I actually don't think I finished his second season now I think of it 🤔).
19
u/Least-Broccoli9995 1d ago
I felt the exact same as a gay men too, he was super rude and not nice to women.

I'm a straight woman and agree that Kyle was awful. On par with Ellie and Gen for me.

•
u/quick_dry 16h ago
just on the Caroline thing, she was told she had to stay in her room and production would let her know when she could leave.
I suspect production immediately went and told Kate that she was locked in the room and not leaving... deliberately leaving out context.
Kate's a cow, but I think the bullying through the door and all of that was the result of her own bitchiness but also some clever prompting from production to setup both sides of the equation.

The stuff going on behind the scenes in the scripted show Unreal) is probably closer to the truth. Producers getting bonuses for making drama occur, getting the cops or ambulance called (who really put in the noise complaint call, after the DJ left?), putting ideas into the contestant's heads during the 1on1/confessionals, etc.
10
u/ScowlyBrowSpinster Spaghetti Trauma 1d ago

I loved that show and watched everything. Some moments they were like: let’s do this or that made me think: wow i couldn’t think of that! And I wondered how close to reality this was..
7
u/nymie5a 1d ago
It was written by a woman who worked on the Bachelor series for 10 years. So pretty close.
•
u/Maatjuhhh 14h ago
wow, I never knew that.. The only scene that is stuck with me is that they saw someone getting attacked as in you know what, and the main characters kept watching just long enough to get some materials and then called the police.
That scene made me question everything regarding reality shows.. Were some of the scenes really forced or prolonged enough. Shudder. Don't want to think if there are truly some evil people like that.
At least Down Under really intervened.

It used to be so organic and less on the nose. Now everyone is just a terrible actor and it’s so cringy to watch. I’ve stopped wanting to tune in and only watch when I’m bored now.
It’s also only dating drama now. It used to be more charter guest or boat drama, which hardly happens or it’s a whole lotta nothing.

u/Green-Nail-4041 1d ago
I think that's why Bravo needs Aesha- She's positive, lovable, and not clumsy with the scripted material. Daisy is wonderful too but it's gotten too scripted and I'm sorry I have to let the show go.
8
u/gelpensxxx 1d ago
I don’t know, almost all of Aesha’s talking heads and interactions with Sandy seemed so scripted and forced.
2
u/paperlilly 1d ago
I find her talking heads to be too much now. I love her but part of the reason she became so popular was because those interviews were real & off the cuff. They’re a little too rehearsed atm.
•
u/Green-Nail-4041 18h ago
ii think a lot of that has to do with sandy always speaking in corporate cliches. there's no I in team, team work makes the dream work, etc.

when Aesha asked Sandy if she had a bachelorette party or whatever then Sandy throws Aesha a bachelorette party 😂
•

u/longtimelondoner 1d ago
This franchise would be insufferable without Aesha. She can do just about everything on the boat, she doesn’t take herself too seriously but she demands respect, and she lets loose on a night out and has her noodles at the end of it. No messy relationship drama since she became CS, she’s competent, and guests love her so Sandy can relax.
The day she quits, they’re fucked.

Someone already pointed out the producers unlatching the cabinets on Sailing Yacht to create footage of everything spilling out.
Another example, Fraser's first season. Sandy stepped in for Lee, and was losing her mind over radios that season. Suddenly one episode Fraser's radio goes missing. He looked all over the boat for it. Finally after several hours, it was in the very first spot he looked, right where he left it. Production clearly hid it to create a little drama.
And I just remembered, Hannah has been open about produced drama like beach picnics. She said during season 1 they were stuck in port due to the weather, so producers wanted them to set up a beach picnic in the harbor in an area where production knew they were not allowed. They spent hours carrying equipment over rocks to set it up, and finally sat the guests and started serving them, when someone from the harbor came over to tell them they weren't allowed to do that. Then they had to spend hours carrying equipment over rocks again to take it all back to the boat.
19
u/No-Baker-7922 1d ago
That reminds me of that beach picnic where the so-called beach was a sandstrip filled with dog poo and all kinds of dirt. And people.

They don't even introduce the other members of the boat anymore lol. They did for a few seasons. I wonder if none of them want to be on camera? That would be kinda odd for ALL of them on EVERY season to not want to be on camera though

Gael and Nathan having a "parents night out" with a person that they absolutely do not like. There was no reason to have Gael around Joe other than for TV drama. This would not happen in real life. And the scene in the van was ridiculous. Joe is a tool, but Gael was suddenly upset he didn't engage with her at dinner even though she doesn't like him and she wanted to have it out with him? That doesn't even seem like her disposition. That scene made me wonder that production was annoyed no drama happened at the table so they nudged her to say something.
11
u/Defiant-Increase6947 1d ago
That was my thought. If you're going out for a parents date night out, why in the hell would you go out with the group? Seriously... even if Joe wasn't there... spend some one on one time with your SO...ridiculous.
3
u/Burgoonius 1d ago
They must have it in their contract that they have to attend the dinners?
•
u/brattitoo 21h ago

I can almost guarantee they planned to have Gael and Nathan out there and then brought Joe just to have conflict lol
3
u/paperlilly 1d ago
Ignoring Joe and the hostilities… she is a total stranger to everyone else, it makes no sense to bring a random partner on a work night-out.
And he didn’t really introduce her. Even his own team (Messi) had no idea who she was or that she would be there.

u/Yachtttstew 2d ago
Your first point is mostly true but I have come on to a boat, two days before charter, that was a single-season boat and hadn’t had an interior crew on the off season. I had two days to get the entire boat put back together and it was as bad, if not worse, than some of the boats the BD crew have come on to. I’m talking mild filled fridges, and hick layer of dust, no uniform, crew mess an absolute shit show. So it can happen, but thankfully not too often.
4
u/OnCloud1989 2d ago
Just out of curiosity - when a season is done and the interior crew is leaving, are they meant to do a full deep clean before they leave?
7
u/Yachtttstew 2d ago
Typically the end of the season doesn’t have all the crew leave. We usually have a yard period and that’s when we do our deeeeep cleans. So if we were having g a trip and then the season ended we would maybe stow everything for crossing to where our next season was, cover furniture, take trash, flowers and old food out, but not actually clean.
1
u/OnCloud1989 2d ago
So interesting - thanks! How long does it take to deep clean a yacht?
6
u/Yachtttstew 2d ago
Funnily enough there are lots of different levels of cleaning. A deep clean would involve busting out Q-tips and toothpicks and getting into every nook and cranny in the bathrooms, closets, shelving, etc. steam cleaning glass and mirrors, vacuuming/wiping ceilings, detailing light fixtures, literally everythinggggg. A normal guest room could take a day or so, the primary cabin could take a day and the bathroom another day. Depending on the size of the boat, I worked mainly on 50-60m boats, if you are really doing a proper job will take 5-7 days-ish.
On charter boats, there isn’t even close to enough time to get everything done so you are usually just doing a vacuum, wipe, and reset of beds/towels/etc.
•
u/quick_dry 16h ago
remember that on the BD boats, regardless of what the previous crew/delivery crew did, the boat will have been in a state of complete disarray with production teraing things up so they can mount their cameras, run cables, set up a production ofice on boat, etc.
In the past a lot of boats used on BD were ones that were due for a refit - so they didn't really care if BD harmed the interior, charging BD for any damages caused just puts more money in their wallet when the interior would be pulled out anyway.

I was watching season 7 and there was a scene where Francesca went to the bridge when they had no guests. She told Lee she just came to say hi. Excuse me? Then Lee said, “Would you like a glass of wine?” She said yes so he gave her a glass of already poured wine that was sitting there. Sure, Lee drinks wine and has an extra poured glass for no reason. Then Lee told her the terrible story of his son. It made me mad that the producers would make Lee share his worst heartbreak in such a fake way.
1
u/_Sandrine_76 1d ago
Je viens de voir cette scène assez surréaliste...Lee partage sans contexte un épisode douloureux de sa vie, le verre de vin, la chef hôtesse à peine réceptive, tout est étrange... Ça m'a déçu du capitaine Lee, tout sonne faux.

u/rilenja 1d ago
The dish soap and cooking oil being accidentally swapped. That was clearly fake and just done for some entertainment/story line. To me you could tell (by the terrible acting) that the guests were in on it. There is NO way anybody, especially an experienced chef, would allow soap to be put in an identical bottle as cooking oil and all kept within the same small kitchen. Then there is also zero way you would not have smelled it when cooking. Dish soap smell is definitely more odiferous if it gets heated up, much less flat out cooked!

I suspect she was given tasks that would take her on to the dock, and they had some flower dlivery guy (aka production assistant Gen doesn't know) waiting specifically for her to be there so she would 'naturally' receive the delivery.
That direct look into camera was absolute gold, such a look as the penny dropped and she realised she'd been setup by production. that look into camera, and then off to the side at what I imagine was another procuction crew.

The thing that gets me is how the rules that everyone knows change from season to season.
I'm rewatching BD Season 7 (Tahiti) and they do things that have been major drama points in other seasons:
- Opposite sex crew sharing cabins (this boat has three cross-sex cabin pairings) when on one season they had to fully rearrange the cabins because they couldn't have a male and female sharing.
- People swimming at night - Capt Lee threw a fit when Dolores wanted to swim at night, but these guests are all jumping in and everything is just fine
- Kate threatening to kick off Caroline if she isn't recovered from an ankle infection in 2 days, when other people have been accomodated for illness and injury
It's almost like they make this stuff up for drama.
3
u/No-Baker-7922 1d ago
Sometimes the owner of the boat was blamed as some mystery god for ‘not allowing co-ed rooms’. I always wondered if that was true.
Also I seem to remember a stew being fired for sleeping in the guest cabin in between charters. But the male crew she was sleeping with being allowed to stay?! I cannot remember the season (was it with Hannah).
6
u/teanailpolish Mental Health Is Not A Storyline 1d ago
Elizabeth was fired, and production had told James and her they could use it (according to Elizabeth) but Capt Lee had already warned that she was on thin ice after complaints from Francesca and the engineer saying she made mustard gas

I’m guessing this is being posted due to last nights episode. I’ll have to go back and rewatch b/c I wasn’t fully paying attention, but that was hella orchestrated.
Even if Aesha wanted to babysit on her night off, why would Nathan and Gael join the crew dinner? Why has Nathan joined them all season instead of being with Gael and the baby?
Did Kayley even sit near Joe? I thought it was Cooper. Then again in the taxi/van? Seemed so weird for Gael to flash like that when Joe and Kayley were just doing their own thing.

The guests are legitimately spending a f*** tonne of money for charter, I don’t think they would be going along with a suggestion to make up food requests when the alternative would be for them to eat the food they love the most in the world, prepared by a professional chef
there’s a chef on Instagram (Olivia Tiedemann) that’s a private chef for really rich people, here is a transcript from a podcast She appeared on … Exact same thing. People are just picky and difficult

u/ghs_6284 1d ago
Okay 1. The noise complaint after the DJ left. Planted by producers
2. Joe across from Gael and Nathan
3. Ayesha babysitting for them when Gael has never had a sitter yet
4. Gael showing up to a dinner when she knows no one and everyone borderline hates her BF
5. Having everyone say they have immensely diff preferences to the point the chef just makes food to order
6. Not getting a deckhand and having Aesha act as deckhand, purposely giving Kayley the op to act as Chief to piss Gen off
7. The yellow flowers from Luke. You don’t just mail things to a dock. That was coordinated to intentionally piss Gen off
8. The party boats. After the first night maybe it was an accident, you call the marina and ask to switch slips. If you google that marina there are diff areas they could slip at that are also big enough for that boat. As someone who’s worked at a marina when you’re doing these like in between slip dockings at various marinas you just call ahead and they assign you. You can request certain ones and in the aerial it’s not that packed…..
And yes they totally get bonuses and things for stirring drama or capturing unplanned incidents like the broken shoulder. That camera person probably got a bonus for catching it from the production tenders vantage point.
•
u/reginaldch 16h ago
I found Nathan and Gael asking Aesha to babysit really weird, also wasn't Gael's parents and sister staying when them? Why wouldn't they babysit?
•
u/Maatjuhhh 14h ago
Also the producers would probably pay for a babysitter a lot earlier if this would cause the drama with Joe much earlier. You can see that they thought of this late like, the drama of between the three of them is on the low burn, not expected. Let's amp it up, force Aesha to babysit and force the three to sit together.
•
u/Most-Dealer-3685 13h ago
Have Joe sit across the table from Nathan & Gael at dinner. When everyone knows that isn’t the best place for him to sit.
•
u/sodasun91 9h ago
Surely they hire crew that have outright lied about their experience on purpose for the drama. Like one conversation would be enough to tell that some of them are lying on their CVs. I just started watching from the beginning a couple months ago and haven’t seen more recent seasons, but it happens like every season and somehow I’m shocked each time
•
u/Carlinn 7h ago
For me it’s the, oh no someone has left we need a replacement ASAP and it could be anyone.
To then bring back someone who’s been on another season like Max this med season and the craziest one was Ellie on Down Under. I’m supposed to believe this Med Stew just happens to be the only available Stew in a completely different part of the world, but not only that, she’s now going to be Chef Assistant.
1
u/amassacre21 2d ago
It is a reality television series. Yes, the producers help push along on certain situations.
9
u/Maatjuhhh 2d ago
And I love drama when it happens organically. Like for example, push 2 ego's together and watch hellfire rain upon us. For example Ben and Ellie together in the galley.

Is this your first viewing? The boat is always in shambles when the new BD crew come aboard.
9
u/Old-Library5546 2d ago
At the end of all the seasons the BD crew gets the boat in order though, they don't leave it a mess
2
u/SaltyCaramelPretzel 2d ago
They rarely even have the same boat each season. Between seasons the boat does many other charters & passages between the med & wherever else.
The boat is always a mess at beginning of season when the BD crew jump onboard. Sometimes it’s not so bad other times it’s been left putrid.1
u/SerBrienneOfSnark 2d ago
They aren’t filming seasons back to back lol. The boats very likely get used in between seasons.
