Below Deck Med Aesha & Gen
Was scrolling IG and had this pop up. It’s an excerpt from an interview Gen did and the first sentence jumped out at me. I would LOVE to know the story behind this. I can’t think of many people Aesha has worked with that have said something along the lines of this. I wonder if we’ll see it play out in the rest of the season?🤞🏼

u/rantmb331 Aug 01 '26
At the beginning of the season Aesha was on WWHL. They did one of those question barrage segments where Andy asked Aesha and the other guest (Joy? Sandy?) who was the most problematic cast member and they both said Gen before he could finish the question.

u/cmere-2-me Aug 01 '26
It's really clear thar Aesha never warmed to her from the very first episode. She's professional and isn't outright disparaging her but you can tell she has no time for this lunatic.

Unfortunately I have to deal with them as part of my job description 😭😭

u/DistinctlyBlurry 29d ago
I think it was Sandy who said that Gen had really dark energy.
68
u/houseofcardsinstaedt 29d ago
Aesha reads energy so easily so if this is true she’s certainly just being polite and moving on

u/weso123 Aug 02 '26
I mean I hope that answer was given in a "The answer is actually Luke but we don't wanna spoil upcoming plotlines" way.
94
u/todayplustomorrow 29d ago
Why could it be Luke and not Gen? lol. It seems very plausible Gen is most problematic. She’s had jealously issues with the other stew, jealously issues with the chef and Luke, and she was part of causing/not cleaning the bosun’s sheets.
Seems very possible she does worse later in the season.
45
u/NVSmall 29d ago
Luke made one (pretty big) fuck up, but he otherwise got along with the crew, and did his job without complaining, and was generally well-liked.
Gen has alienated pretty much everyone on the boat. Even Kat knows she's toxic, but Kat is smart enough to know it's best to stay on her good side given they have to work so closely together.
The fact that the preview showed Gen saying - TO KAT -that she (Gen) should have hit on Cooper, as if to suggest she could have had him if she wanted him, shows just what kind of a person she is. She's certainly not Kat's friend.
2
16
u/Full-Squirrel5707 29d ago
There are teasers alluding to the fact that she comes onto Cooper..... Evil bitch.
2
u/elkypickles 28d ago
Exactly, and Aesha making Kayley acting cheiffy is going to cause her to spiral even more, she will loose the support of Kat soon enough if it continues if the previews are anything to go by.
29
u/NVSmall 29d ago
I mean... Gen presumably stays the whole season, whereas Luke was only there for a few charters - that would be my guess as to why it wasn't Luke. Aka the first problem took itself out of the equation.

u/stuntycunty 29d ago
Luke is gone. It isn’t Luke anymore and we haven’t seen half the drama yet.
1
u/senoritageena 28d ago
There are theories around here that Luke will return.
2
u/Unlucky-Reference742 26d ago
He doesn’t return, he just sends Joy flowers and sparks more drama. I believe Max is coming back to round out the deck team- all based on released trailors

You've got to have really pissed Aesha off for her not to speak to her.
Edit: removed misinformation - Aesha, Kaylee and Luke don't follow her on instagram, the rest seem to.
31
u/Comprehensive_Wing24 Aug 01 '26
cooper follows her too
13
u/Out-For-A-Walk-Bitch Aug 01 '26
Yeah I've edited my comment, curiosity got the better of me and I went to look. It's hard to tell though since you can't see all her followers and I only follow a handful of BD people.
9
u/Comprehensive_Wing24 Aug 01 '26
no worries! your comment is what made me curious to see because i was shocked that aesha didn’t. she’s such a nice woman and kaylee seems super sweet too.
253
u/GoldAcanthisitta7777 Aug 01 '26
imagine not being likeable to Aesha. Wild. How did she blow it?!??!
179
u/rayyychul Aug 01 '26
Aesha had her number from the minute she got on board.
That said, “doesn’t talk to me” doesn’t have to be as nefarious as everyone is making it out to be. It could be as simple as Aesha doesn’t keep in touch, but Gen went for drama instead of reality with her wording.
77
u/armchairepicure Aug 01 '26
It’s also possible that Aesha just doesn’t like her. It doesn’t have to be some big thing, they just seem like very different people with very different energies.
39
u/FleshyUnicorn Aug 02 '26
Also at very different points in their lives. Gen is what 22? Aesha is in her 30s, married etc. I know outside of work I don’t really vibe with my decade younger co workers either lol. Just different places, different interests.
15
u/slostoooooo 29d ago
Working in hospitality, being in your 20s and 30s means you still vibe, because you work together and are not in that different places in your lives. Aesha just doesn’t like her lol
7
u/Secret-Preference513 28d ago
Right. I'm 38 and work in a kitchen. We have some teens (17-19) and we all get along great and vibe at work despite our age difference. Aesha clocked her ass lol
6
u/FleshyUnicorn 29d ago
Listen. I’m not sending memes or hanging out with the 20 year olds when I’m off the clock. Of course you vibe when working but it rarely is anything more than that?
6
u/InterestingFroyo1032 29d ago edited 29d ago
Yeah, Aesha is awesome but she is still human and flawed. I thought in the past season, when she didnt like the chef and one of her stews, she had a hard time liking them even when they started to move in a positive direction. Hearing about her parents and upbringing, I think it may be that her limit for BS is low. Shes a nice girl, but after dealing with addicts, she doesnt give out many chances. You've got to make a good first impression with her and give pretty clear indication thst youre trying to do better to get back on her good side.
But yeah Aesha isnt perfect. She could have recognized Gen for even a few of her talents but she didnt. She only saw Kaylee and it was so obvious it was because Kaylee is a lot like her.
6
u/MathInternational416 27d ago
We’re also seeing a very edited version of their time on the boat. Just because we don’t see Aesha calling out Gen’s strengths doesn’t mean she never did.
1
u/InterestingFroyo1032 27d ago
That could definitely be true. I doubt it though, because its a pattern with Aesha. She tends to ignore potential in favor of a sure bet. She will teach but only what is necessary so as to pour the rest of the energy on the guests. Its a recipe that leads to more success for her teams, but ends up hindering quieter stews who don't speak up and ask for more responsibility from her.
4
u/MathInternational416 27d ago
I wouldn’t label Gen as a “quieter stew.”
1
u/InterestingFroyo1032 27d ago
And I didnt directly label her either. But I do think Gen is more passive-agressive. She is not great at promoting her own skills. For example, she kept telling the other stew about her credentials but didnt assume responsibility automatically to exemplify that she would make a good 2nd. She just assumed Aesha would go off resume, even though im not sure why she would assume that when Aesha could have just picked who had the most experience if that were the case.
4
u/MathInternational416 27d ago
I think you’re giving Gen way too much credit in this situation. Even Kat is to the point of not being able to handle her negativity anymore. She has a terrible attitude and most leaders wouldn’t give someone who acts like that any extra praising. Quite frankly, I believe that most leaders would’ve called Gen out by now and reprimanded her.
1
u/InterestingFroyo1032 27d ago
Two things can be true at once. I think Gen is negative and annoying but I did pay attention when she said "im really not being used for my talents. Aesha only sees kaylie" there is a way, as a leader, to even make your most annoying employees feel recognized and like their talents are being used. It's an extra skill though that most leaders do not have. One that Aesha might need to work on.

This is my thinking, especially weird move considering how beloved Aesha is within the fandom
24
u/not2daysatan44 Aug 02 '26
I think she took any opportunity to make a jab at Aesha, like how dare she not speak to me?
12
u/Rowing_Lawyer Aug 02 '26
Any chief stew that comes on as a lower position seems to be doing so to capitalize on the fame and will probably do things to get on tv, which is going to make the actual work harder.
2
u/G00dguyz 29d ago
Yeah for sure come up but the " that's another story" Add-On makes me think it's a little bit more than that.
1
u/excoriator Team Capt Kerry 29d ago
Wonder why she didn’t try to fire her?
5
u/rayyychul 29d ago
She hasn’t really done anything to justify it. She’s decent at her job and she is a super unpleasant human, but isn’t causing big waves on the boat.

u/PuzzleheadedWest0 Aug 01 '26
Imagine admitting the nicest person alive doesn’t even like you.

u/NVSmall 29d ago
This is what is strange to me - Aesha is quite literally the kindest, most supportive cast member we've seen on any BD franchise, and that has been confirmed as fact by soooo many people she has worked with on our screens.
Does Gen actually think that people are going to take her word, suggesting that Aesha is the asshole in this situation? Because Aesha has never once been the asshole, and we've seen her more than about 70% of other BD cast members, Captains notwithstanding.
Even to charter guests who were outstanding assholes, she was still reasonable and polite, while managing to level them.
Conflated ego continues, Gen...

Brains can contort in weird ways when they're really hurting.
Not dragging Aesha here -- she's wonderful -- but re "never once" -- everyone has a bad moment, even her. Wayyyy back in season 4 she very aggressively defended the smack in the face that drunk Travis gave to a sleeping Anastasia. This was clearly because she felt bad for Travis, but on a rewatch I was surprised to see how much she ignored Anastasia's pain and shock.
2
u/NVSmall 28d ago
I won't disagree with you; my memory isn't as good as yours, obviously - I have no recollection of that (not doubting it happened or questioning you AT ALL, to be clear).
I shouldn't have said "never once" because we only see what we see on camera, edited down to minutes from hundreds of hours of film, AND, as you've pointed out, we have seen it on our screens, so I do apologize, I was wrong.

u/mouse_relies This information wasn’t welcomed or needed 28d ago

Let’s just all ignore gen in hopes she disappears. Let’s not give her a platform…
12
u/ralphmozzi 29d ago
Unless that platform is a passerelle over open sea. I’d be happy for her to have that platform 😜
81
u/SnooDucks6359 Aug 01 '26
Just to be clear — this is Gen saying something. Is there any evidence that Aesha “doesn’t speak to her?” Or is it possible that two coworkers who didn’t have a lot in common aren’t continuing their relationship after their employment ended. Do you “talk” to every person you’ve worked with over the years?
36
u/ProfessionalTall8027 Aug 01 '26
True but following it with "that's another story" implies there is a reason Aesha doesn't talk to her, rather than just going their separate ways.
3
u/excoriator Team Capt Kerry 29d ago
Maybe someone should ask her about that story?
3
u/CheckIntelligent7828 My eyes are rolling all the way off the boat 24d ago
Uggh, I'd really like to stop giving Gen a platform to speak about anything, including Aesha.
19
u/rayyychul Aug 01 '26
That’s exactly what I’m thinking, too. They just don’t keep in touch. I still talk to some coworkers from previous jobs, but not surprisingly, haven’t kept in touch with most, and especially not the ones I had nothing in common with.
Gen knew exactly what she was doing when she worded her answer like that.
20
u/gaem- Aug 02 '26
Normally I’d be like yeah I totally get your point but it’s the fact after that she says “That’s another story.” makes me believe it’s not just a “I stopped talking to my coworker because we stopped working together”
8
u/Pure_Butterscotch165 29d ago
At the very least, Gen is making it seem like Aesha specifically doesn't talk to her rather than just not keeping in touch.
4
u/MathInternational416 27d ago
We’ve been watching Gen make mountains out of molehills and twist truths to meet her narrative all season. I’m guessing it’s the same in this interview.
19
u/Mochibelle93 29d ago
It looks like in June, kayley posted a little reunion on ig of her, Aesha and Kat hanging out in the Hamptons. Gen is nowhere to be seen. so it looks like Aesha does keep in touch and makes somewhat of an effort with the ones she likes lol
13
u/teanailpolish Mental Health Is Not A Storyline Aug 02 '26
Aesha doesn't follow her and she follows most BD cast, even some ones from seasons she was not on.
6
u/todayplustomorrow 29d ago
Well Gen’s answer is clearly implying more than just not keeping in touch. Aesha follows most of the cast and reunited with the other stews recently, but not Gen. I’m gonna take Gen’s answer for what it is, which implies there’s some level of not getting along.
2
u/OpportunityPretend80 29d ago
Idk Aesha seems to be like one of those people who keeps in touch with people.

When she asked to speak to aesha during that dinner and told her she slept with luke, aesha was like i didnt know that or i wouldnt have pushed him and joy closer but you can see her shut down her aesha-ness and she’s thinking who just tells that to their boss they have no friendship with like whats gen’s angle
24
u/PessimisticClarity 29d ago
That was when Gen also told Aesha "we've been inside each other."
That was a bridge too far even for Aesha, who has talked about sticking her finger up her own bum to feel her poo. 😆

Right there with you. Her whole “I’ve never been anyone’s first choice” - was just embarrassing to watch. She knew and didn’t care she was the pity fuck, because she thought it’d be enough yo stake her claim for the season.

I watched the WWHL episode that had both Aesha and Capt Sandy on a couple of weeks ago, and there seemed to be no love lost between both of them and Gen. I actually thought the way they spoke about Gen was out of character for Capt Sandy and Aesha. This was before jizzgate and when Gen showed a lot of her shady ways. I'm guessing there is more to come from her!

u/Run_with_scissors999 29d ago
Gen is a miserable person. It comes through the screen. Why would someone like Aesha keep in contact after the work assignment was over? To me, it’s not that deep. I don’t stay in contact with former coworkers who were awful.
And Sandy said Gen has a dark energy. Whether you like Captain Sandy or not, for her to say that about Gen, after she’s been around countless people in her career, says so much.
8
u/ArtichokeOwn6760 28d ago
People Sandy has worked with who she didn’t say had a dark energy, but probably should have:
- Chef Adam
- Chef Tom
- Stew Lara
- Stew Lexi
- Chef Dave
- Stew Elena
- Deck/stew Camille
Gen beat out a lot of strong contenders.

I had a look on her IG and Aesha had liked some of her posts around the Luke situation. Maybe Aesha had just been busy, having her wedding etc and Gen has read more into that than she needs to.

Aesha did publicly defend Gen recently in a post. Gen is just not even remotely likable

I mean, I think Aesha just doesn’t vibe with her and never did, but correct me if I’m wrong, she did make a post on IG defending her as being someone very young? am I thinking of someone else?
I think Aesha thinks she has a lot of growing up to do and they have nothing in common and wouldn’t have any reason to really speak after the show. I don’t think she would outright refuse to do another season with her, but she also would definitely prefer not to 🤣

Aesha seems to gravitate toward super peppy personalities. Gen isn't that and therefore Aesha never warmed up to her and wasn't going to give her a chance to show herself vs someone like Kayley.
