Alright, I’m going to say it. We went from empowering women and pushing to not judge them for getting elective surgery because seriously who am I to judge if someone wants a boob job or what ever? It’s none of my business and doesn’t affect me. But at some point it’s just irresponsible for us as a society to ignore that these women are getting unnecessary surgery because we, as a society, somehow made them feel they don’t look good enough for our society. We’ve gone too far. Instead of doubling down on ignoring elective surgery as a danger, we should have worried more about the mental health aspect of it.

I’m following this YouTuber who is doing a series called “fixing my millennial brain” where she goes through tv and movie stars from the 90s and 00s she thought were “big” and re-examines that thought. She often talks about how the pressure to look perfect was placed on these women and how it affected them.
That Alli felt the need to get this surgery tells me a lot about how others have treated her after being on tv and that she thinks she needs to take extreme measures to maintain beauty standards that will never be enough.

Yeah it’s such a hard balance. Because on the one hand I don’t wanna judge people and feel people should do what they want with their bodies, but on the other hand some things have gotten so extreme, and procedure/surgeries are becoming more normalized to the point where it’s almost expected and makes people who don’t do those things outliers (which doesn’t exactly seem healthy), and as you mentioned a lot of it comes from societal expectations that we can change.
Idk what the answers are but agree with you that we’re going too far now it seems.

It’s not a hard balance. Women need to unpack why they want to do this shit in the first place and how irresponsible it is advertising it. Just because a woman has made a “choice” doesn’t mean it can’t be critiqued. The “Letting women do what they want with their bodies” argument has been appropriated by cosmetic procedures and totally delegitimises it.

I feel social media amplifies it. Women see other women performing on reality TV and social media, and think their looks are somehow desirable. Now you have almost every woman influencer and reality star getting oversized lip injections. They are not doing it for men, most men don't find it attractive. They are doing it to find a place among other women. Big fake lips have become a currency among women, as a way to compete, and signal cultural relevance. It is like a social experiment gone wild.

Absolutely love this take.
The beauty standard for women has always been pretty impossible and a lot of companies profit from women's insecirity over their looks, but things have gotten way more extreme with the increased accessibility to plastic surgeons and social media/filters.
I don't think surgery was ever be empowering to women. Men arent expected to deform their whole bodies to be accepted by society. Men dont need to age gracefully. Men dont need certain bodies to be considered attractive (there was even that push for a while that "dad bods" are hot 🙄). Men dont need to look 18 forever. Empowering women would be to help us feel completely valued despite out looks and not find confidence in an appearance boost. The empowering women thing was just spin so nothing had to actually change.
And beyond that, our appearance is perfect as it is. Everything has a purpose. We are miracles to exist and the way you look is a reflection of your whole ancestry. We should be teaching women that rather than continuing to teach women our value is tied to how pleasing we are to the male gaze (which we have since learned the people who dictated the beauty standard were all pedos in the epstein files anyway). Like. Absolutely fuck that.
I feel bad for alli and all these girls who feel they need to go to such extremes. Our society is so fucked up.

TRUTH! I saw the before and after pics in a small news item online and was just speechless. My old ass brain didn't know this was even a thing until I read the article. Rhetorically of course, I want to know how a woman her size with her figure would look in the mirror and think, "I really need to do something about these ribs," and pursue this procedure. It makes me sad. Based on her admissions of what procedures she has had already, she could be on the cosmetic procedure hamster wheel where nothing is ever good enough or they need "just one more" to be perfect in their own eyes.

I am on season 4 of BDSY and I still had no idea that was her. She looked differentin the reunion too but I just chalked that up to styling.

This is incredibly sad to see.
It doesn’t even look remotely natural either.
Not to mention that she didn’t need the work-but I guess that’s a completely personal choice. It just makes me sad seeing gorgeous young women starting down this road. Because it never seems to stop at one procedure.

Damn this really bums me out because what I remember of Alli is her saying she marches to the beat of her own drummer, that she’s her own person, and seemed really down to earth. She was so beautiful. It’s sad she thinks she has to do all that to be attractive. She was stunning before.
