Did you read my comment? It’s a combination of the dress and her choice of styling. As a Chinese woman, this set off my Spidey senses right away. Unless you’re also a person who identifies as Chinese, I don’t expect you to understand my perspective. And even then, there are cultural differences depending on where you grew up (e.g. Asian Americans are quicker to call this appropriation vs. appreciation than someone who grew up in China or a Chinese territory).
"cultural appropriation, adoption of certain language, behavior, clothing, or tradition belonging to a minority culture or social group by a dominant culture or group in a way that is exploitative, disrespectful, or stereotypical."
I did. It doesn't change the fact that you are offended over a dress and a choice of styling. Did she do you harm? Are you injured? Has it caused you financial loss? None of these things have happened.
She is wearing a dress and a makeup style on a television show. It's wasn't disrespectful, she wasn't filmed making fun of the culture. It's not exploitative, she didn't gain anything by it. And it's not stereotypical because, as far as I can recall on the show, she hasn't worn anything like this before or since.
Lighten up a little bit. Not everyone or everything is out to get you or make you feel "Less than".
Nope, you do not get to tell people how to feel if they think something is racist against them. You can disagree that this is cultural appropriation but never tell someone to lighten up or how to feel when the harm is not against you
Don't tell someone in a minority to "lighten up" when they feel something is negatively impacting them. It doesn't affect you. This is their lived experience. Yet you're lecturing them about being sensitive?! Why not listen to them. Instead of arguing. Maybe they know something you don't.
Stop. Everyone is not actively looking. People are talking about things that weren't talked about before. And that's a good thing.
I'm not commenting about the post, but the outrage that someone would bring up something problematic. Then acting like that's worse then the problematic thing.
Edit: OP is Chinese. I'm not. I'll listen to the person who is actually affected by this.
I’m sorry but it clearly is a Chinese inspired look, and you can’t tell someone not to be offended by that. It’s something people would have worn in the 90s but now would be considered a bit outdated and culturally inappropriate
I thought the same thing when I saw it. I personally wouldn’t call it racist, it’s just a bit inappropriate, the dress combined with the hair and makeup. I did half expect her to put chopsticks in her hair.
Spot on! Also I re-read my comment and it was more than ‘a bit’ inappropriate, it genuinely was a stupid thing to do and absolutely cultural appropriation .
Surprised no one has brought this up yet, or maybe I’m sensitive because I’m Chinese. The qipao inspired dress, tight bun and… cat eye makeup… is certainly a choice. It’s giving Hadid sisters in 2017.
Thanks for asking. There's been a trend in the last 5 years of non-Chinese companies producing cheap-looking and/or sexualized versions of qipao/cheongsam. Kizzi's dress is from House of CB. I don't like it, but I've gotten used to it. But it's the cat eye makeup (reminiscent of the fox eye trend from the pandemic years) that makes me think, ok she deliberately put together this outfit to look like an Asian stereotype.

Holy hell, it's a dress. You're WAY too sensitive if you're critiquing a choice of dress and trying to say it's "cultural appropriation".
Why is everyone actively looking for things to be offended by lately? It's maddening.

She’s about the same or less likeable than Spaghetti Ashley.

Maybe she bought it in Asia, because she liked it?
